Crypto had a strong finish to 2024, but it was not a uniform boom. Bitcoin and the total market reached reported highs late in the year, U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded products widened brokerage access, and activity shifted across ecosystems. At the same time, the year brought no single explanation for rising prices—and the effects of earlier exchange failures were still unfolding.
How big was crypto’s 2024 rally?
CoinGecko’s 2025 annual report on 2024 says Bitcoin first crossed $100,000 on December 9, reached $108,135 on December 17, and ended the year at $93,508. CoinGecko calculated that Bitcoin’s price rose 121.5% from the start of 2024. Those are the report’s figures; market-data providers may use different data and aggregation methods.
| Measure | Reported result | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin price | $108,135 on December 17; $93,508 at year-end | Bitcoin’s reported price, not the performance of every crypto asset |
| Total crypto market capitalization | Up 97.7% during 2024; peaked at $3.91 trillion in mid-December and ended Q4 at $3.40 trillion | The combined market value tracked by CoinGecko |
| Bitcoin share of total crypto market capitalization | 53.6% at year-end | Bitcoin’s dominance within the total market by market value |
| Centralized-exchange spot trading volume | $6.45 trillion in Q4, up 111.7% from Q3 | Reported trading activity, not investment returns or net money entering the market |
| Decentralized-exchange trades | Solana accounted for more than 30% in Q4 | Share of trades, not share of all crypto value or users |
The measures tell different stories. Bitcoin’s price and share of market value rose, while trading volume measures how much was traded and DEX share describes where trades occurred. None shows that every token, protocol, or crypto business gained value.
What changed for investors who use brokerage accounts?
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETPs expanded access, not SEC endorsement
In January, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission approved listing and trading of certain spot Bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP) shares. These products give investors brokerage-based exposure; they are not the same as buying bitcoin and holding it directly in a wallet. The product structure also means investors should not treat owning ETP shares as direct possession of bitcoin.

SEC Chair Gary Gensler stated: “While we approved the listing and trading of certain spot bitcoin ETP shares today, we did not approve or endorse bitcoin.” His statement described the action as limited to ETPs holding bitcoin, which it characterized as a non-security commodity. It was not a general approval of crypto assets or trading platforms, and that characterization should not be extended to every token.
Ether ETF developments followed a separate path
In May, the SEC approved spot Ether ETF applications, according to K33 Research’s 2024 timeline. That milestone was distinct from January’s Bitcoin ETP action. Coinbase’s year-end retrospective said spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs attracted more than $100 billion in assets in less than a year. That is Coinbase’s aggregation and market-participant perspective; assets held by funds are not automatically the same measure as net investor inflows or gains.

What else shaped the year’s timeline?
K33 Research’s chronology puts several prominent events alongside the market’s rise. The sequence is useful for understanding what investors were watching, but timing alone does not show that an event caused a price move.
| When | Event | Why it mattered to the year’s story |
|---|---|---|
| January | SEC approval of certain spot Bitcoin ETP listings | Brokerage-based Bitcoin exposure became available through listed products. |
| April | Bitcoin’s fourth halving | A major scheduled Bitcoin-network event that coincided with the year’s market developments. |
| May | SEC approvals for spot Ether ETF applications | Another significant regulatory and investment-product development, separate from the Bitcoin action. |
| During the year | Mt. Gox creditor payment updates and distribution activity | Events related to an earlier exchange failure continued to affect creditors and market attention. |
| October | Approval of FTX’s reorganization plan | A legal milestone in the aftermath of another major exchange failure; it does not by itself establish that all creditors were repaid. |
| November | Launch of Bitcoin ETF options | Added another listed-market instrument connected to Bitcoin exposure. |
CoinGecko described the year’s momentum as coinciding with the halving, U.S. spot ETF approvals, central-bank rate cuts, and Donald Trump’s election. That context does not isolate how much any one factor contributed to the rally. Treating the calendar as proof of causation would overstate what the reported figures establish.
Where did crypto activity move beyond Bitcoin?
Solana gained ground in decentralized trading
CoinGecko reported that Solana accounted for more than 30% of decentralized-exchange trades in Q4, overtaking Ethereum by that measure. This is a shift in trading activity, not evidence that Solana surpassed Ethereum on every measure or that DEX trades alone indicate network quality or lasting adoption.
Ethereum layer 2 activity increased, led by Base
CoinGecko reported that transactions across the ten largest Ethereum layer 2 networks rose 48.3% in Q4, with Base accounting for 48.3% of those transactions. These figures describe the report’s selected networks and transaction measure; they do not establish that activity was evenly distributed or that transaction counts equal unique users.

AI-agent and meme-token markets drew attention
CoinGecko’s report-defined AI-agent category grew from a market capitalization of $4.8 billion to $15.4 billion in Q4. Category definitions matter here: an “AI-agent” market-cap figure depends on which tokens the publisher includes, and capitalization is not the same as cash invested or realized returns.
KPMG’s 2024 virtual-assets review said stablecoins represented more than 50% of blockchain transactions during 2024, compared with 3% in 2020, and that stablecoin market capitalization exceeded $200 billion in December 2024. It also reported meme-token market capitalization of $125 billion in November amid increased activity around Pump.fun. These secondary figures depend on the underlying data sources and definitions; transaction share and market capitalization are not interchangeable measures.

What were the setbacks—and what should not be called a bust?
The year’s gains did not erase the consequences of earlier failures. Mt. Gox creditor distributions and the approval of FTX’s reorganization plan kept those cases in the news, but K33’s timeline is not a basis for claiming that all creditors were fully repaid or that the failures were fully resolved. Those conclusions require the relevant trustee or court records.
The available figures also do not support a definitive ranking of 2024’s biggest crypto losses, hacks, bankruptcies, or worst-performing assets. A Bitcoin record or rising total market capitalization cannot stand in for that kind of ranking. It would require a defined dataset, methodology, and verification of the underlying events; without those, memorable headlines should not be presented as a comprehensive list.
Quick Recap
What the 2024 story means for a personal-finance reader
- Separate access from ownership. An ETP share held through a brokerage is not the same thing as bitcoin held in a wallet.
- Compare the right measures. Price, market capitalization, trading volume, fund assets, and share of DEX trades answer different questions.
- Do not generalize from Bitcoin. Bitcoin’s late-year record does not establish broad gains across tokens, protocols, or companies.
- Keep event and explanation distinct. ETF decisions, rate cuts, the halving, and the election occurred during the year, but the figures cited here do not establish any one as the cause of the market rally.
