The companies did not disclose the purchase price or other financial terms. Chronus said it would combine Imperative’s purpose assessment and guided-conversation technology with its mentoring and employee-resource-group (ERG) software, and that Imperative employees would join Chronus.
What Chronus and Imperative brought to the deal
The companies addressed related but distinct parts of employee development. Chronus focused on organizing mentoring and employee-community programs; Imperative focused on helping employees identify motivations and use structured conversations to connect with colleagues.
| Chronus | Imperative |
|---|---|
| Enterprise mentoring programs and mentor-mentee matching | Purpose Assessment and individualized insights |
| Guided mentoring conversations | Guided one-to-one conversations, peer coaching and trusted networks |
| ERG and employee-community administration | Purpose-oriented engagement programs intended to reduce silos |
| Program administration and reporting | Analytics intended to track participation and the effects of purpose-focused conversations |
Imperative described its approach as turning engagement concepts into structured conversations and behavior, rather than relying only on surveys or broad culture initiatives. Chronus’s mentoring software centers on running programs at enterprise scale, with matching, conversation support, reporting and employee-development use cases.
Why the acquisition made strategic sense
Chronus could use Imperative’s purpose profiles to add context to its existing matching and program tools. In principle, information about what motivates participants could help shape mentoring matches or peer conversations, while guided prompts could make it easier for people to begin and sustain those interactions.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The combination also gave Chronus a broader engagement story: mentoring and ERGs could be positioned not just as program-administration tools, but as ways to support career development, connection and belonging. Chronus said the Purpose Assessment could be used in mentoring and ERGs, and that Purpose Conversations could also be offered as a standalone program. Those are product and strategic claims from the company, not independent evidence that the acquisition improved retention, productivity or engagement.
The deal fits a broader Chronus pattern of adding employee-development capabilities. Chronus also announced acquisitions of MentorStrat, which brought mentoring consulting and training, and eMentorConnect, which expanded its software offering. Taken together, those transactions suggest a strategy of combining software with services and program expertise; that is an inference from the acquisitions, not a disclosed financial rationale for the Imperative deal.

How the announced product workflow was meant to work
In September 2024, Chronus announced purpose-driven mentoring and ERG functionality. Its described workflow connected an assessment to matching and structured interaction:
- Assess purpose: An employee completes a roughly 10-minute Purpose Assessment, according to Chronus.
- Use purpose information: The assessment identifies purpose drivers that can inform purpose-enhanced matching.
- Support the interaction: Participants use purpose-based conversation guides; Chronus also announced purpose-activation workshops.
- Review program data: Administrators can use purpose analytics to review participation and program activity. Chronus also described a standalone Purpose Conversations program.
This is the functionality Chronus announced, not a report of independent product testing. The sources do not quantify customer adoption of the new features or establish that every legacy Imperative capability was migrated.

What is known—and unknown—about the transaction
Chronus and Imperative were both based in Seattle. The announcement date is June 5, 2024: it appears in the PR Newswire Chronus release listing, and GeekWire covered the deal on June 6. Chronus’s acquisition page now displays November 1, 2024, but that later page date conflicts with the contemporaneous announcement and news coverage. It should not be mistaken for the deal announcement date.
The public materials reviewed do not state the purchase price, valuation, cash-versus-stock mix, earn-outs, or other financial terms. Nor do they disclose the number of Imperative employees who joined Chronus, customer count acquired, integration costs, revenue or bookings attributable to the deal, or terms for retaining Imperative customers. Chronus said Imperative’s employees joined its workforce and that its technology would be integrated over the following year; that plan and the later feature announcement do not establish the status of every customer contract, data set or legacy feature.

Chronus’s announcement named WebMD, Roche and GE as Imperative enterprise users. Imperative materials also displayed or referenced other organizational names, including Zillow, Microsoft, GSK, Boston Scientific, Hasbro and Accolade. A listed name or logo does not by itself establish a current contract or the results achieved. GeekWire reported that Imperative raised $3 million in 2020; that financing is not a basis for estimating its acquisition value. Public sources also give conflicting founding years for Imperative, so “founded in the mid-2010s” is more accurate than assigning it a single year.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What enterprise buyers should examine
For HR and learning-and-development teams, the practical question is whether the combined product fits a defined program—not whether purpose software alone can solve disengagement. Chronus’s public product materials emphasize enterprise mentoring, employee communities, guided conversations, matching and reporting, but do not provide a standard numerical price on the product page. Buyers should request a quote and confirm what is included in the proposed package.

- Program fit and scale: Clarify whether the need is mentoring, peer coaching, ERGs, purpose conversations or a mix, and how many employees, regions and programs must be supported.
- Matching and participation: Ask how skill, career, location, demographic or purpose factors affect matches, how participants can raise concerns, and what support helps matches continue beyond an initial meeting.
- Privacy and data governance: Request details on assessment data, individual-profile access, employee opt-outs, retention and deletion, and whether data can be used in hiring, promotion or performance decisions.
- Evidence and analytics: Distinguish enrollment and meeting activity from demonstrated effects on retention, productivity or belonging. Ask how each outcome is defined and measured.
- Implementation and continuity: Confirm integrations, implementation responsibilities and fees, training, support ownership, data portability, and—if migrating from Imperative—the treatment of existing contracts, data and features.
Purpose-based matching may make connections feel more relevant, but profiles can oversimplify motivation or raise concerns about workplace profiling. Conversation guides can provide useful structure but may feel scripted if used rigidly. A unified suite can reduce vendor sprawl while increasing dependence on one supplier. And analytics can help administrators monitor a program without proving that it caused a business outcome.
Most importantly, mentoring and purpose conversations are not substitutes for fair compensation, manageable workloads, effective managers or credible career paths. A buyer should assess whether employees will have time and organizational support to participate, rather than assuming software alone will address the causes of disengagement.
How to compare Chronus with other options
Chronus is most relevant when a large employer wants structured mentoring or employee-community programs with guided conversations and purpose-oriented development. Buyers whose primary need is mentoring can compare it with specialist platforms such as MentorcliQ, Together Platform and Guider. For engagement measurement, surveys and people analytics, Culture Amp is a different category of comparison; for internal communication and employee communities, Workvivo emphasizes a different use case.
These are comparison candidates, not ranked recommendations. Ask each vendor the same questions about profile privacy, assessment governance, integrations, implementation costs, contract minimums, analytics methodology and data portability. Buyers considering the legacy Imperative offering should also confirm whether its standalone product, branding, contracts and feature set remain available under Chronus.
