You can partner with brands without a celebrity-sized following. The strongest opportunities come from a clear audience fit, content that proves what you can make, and a specific proposal. Before accepting an offer, agree in writing on the work, payment, usage rights and deadlines; then disclose the relationship clearly when you publish.
What counts as an Instagram brand partnership?
A partnership can pay you for access to your audience, for creating content, or for both. The distinction matters because a brand may want to use a video beyond the post you create.
- Sponsored content: The brand pays you to publish a Reel, post, Stories, Live or another agreed format on your account.
- Gifted or seeded product: A brand sends a product or service. If there is no posting obligation, it may simply be product seeding. If a post is required or expected in return, it is a commercial arrangement. Meta includes free and loaned products among exchanges of value that call for its paid partnership label (Meta’s branded content guidance).
- Affiliate promotion: You earn a commission or other benefit from purchases through a link or code. That is still a material connection. Meta says affiliate posts should use the paid partnership label, though tagging a business partner is not necessarily required (Meta’s affiliate-content guidance).
- User-generated content (UGC): You make content for the brand’s channels, website, email or ads; you may not publish it to your own account. The brand is buying your production and, if agreed, rights to use the work—not necessarily access to your followers.
- Ambassador or retainer work: A recurring arrangement may include posts, product use, affiliate sales, appearances or category exclusivity.
- Partnership ads: The brand pays to promote creator content through Meta advertising, potentially using the creator’s identity or handle. Meta calls these partnership ads; they are advertising permissions, not ordinary organic reposts (Meta’s eligibility and branded-content guidance; Meta’s overview of Creator Marketplace and partnership ads).
Do you need a large following?
No universal follower threshold applies to every brand, market or Instagram feature. Meta describes eligibility in terms that include an authentic, established presence and a sufficient follower base, without publishing one number that works for every creator (Meta’s eligibility guidance). A brand may also weigh audience relevance, recent reach, saves, shares, comments, watch time, geography, conversion history, content quality and reliability.
Separate audience distribution from production skill. In influencer marketing, the brand is often paying to reach your followers. In a UGC deal, it may primarily want your ability to make persuasive, platform-native content. Smaller creators can pitch either proposition, but should support it with relevant examples and honest performance information.

Make your profile ready for a business inquiry
A brand should be able to understand your work and contact you without searching. Make your niche and audience clear in your bio, add a professional contact method, and link to a portfolio or media kit. Include your location if it affects the campaign, and relevant credentials if they help establish expertise.
Build a small body of work that shows how you present products, explain ideas or tell short-form stories. Examples might include a tutorial, voice-over, lifestyle image, product comparison or clear call to action. You can demonstrate the format without pretending to have used a product or had a brand relationship that does not exist.
Build a media kit that shows the fit
A media kit is a concise sales document, not a promise of results. Include:
- Your name, niche and a short description of the audience you serve.
- Audience size and recent performance indicators, such as typical Reel views, Story views or feed reach.
- Audience geography and available demographic information.
- Your content categories and the formats you can produce.
- Relevant work samples and past partnerships, if you have them.
- Potential deliverables and your contact details.
Use recent, representative figures and label what each metric measures. A follower count alone does not show whether an audience is relevant or whether a video can hold attention. You can create a media kit in a design tool or a simple document; a polished layout is useful, but it cannot substitute for credible examples.

Find brands that make sense for your audience
Start with products your audience asks about, brands already active in your niche and businesses whose products you can honestly assess. Check that the brand sells in your audience’s geography and that its style and customer base fit your work. Look at the creators it has worked with and whether it uses Reels, Stories, UGC or paid creator content.
Meta’s Ad Library guidance can help you identify public ads, including branded content running on Instagram and Facebook. Use that as one research clue, not proof that a company is recruiting or that a campaign is a good fit.
Ways to find opportunities include direct outreach to a brand’s social, PR or partnerships contact; Instagram Creator Marketplace if your account has access; agencies and creator platforms; affiliate programs; professional events and communities; and inbound inquiries encouraged by a clear bio and portfolio. Direct outreach gives you control over whom you approach but requires more verification. A marketplace can surface projects but does not guarantee paid work or remove the need to review terms.

Use Instagram Creator Marketplace if it is available
Creator Marketplace is an official discovery route for eligible professional accounts. Depending on availability, creators can show a portfolio, set content interests and preferred brand partners, be discovered by brands, receive partnership messages and review project details. Meta notes that the feature may not be available to every creator, and the controls can vary by account or rollout (Meta’s Creator Marketplace overview; Meta’s creator setup and availability guidance).
- Open your Instagram profile and go to Professional dashboard.
- Look for Branded content tools or Branded content.
- Select Join creator marketplace, if the option appears.
- Follow the prompts to add interests and portfolio information. Where available, use the branded-content settings to select preferred participating brands.
- Review partnership messages and project requirements, then assess the terms independently before accepting.
If the option is missing, it may not have rolled out to your account, or your account may not meet applicable eligibility requirements. Meta refers to policy compliance and an authentic, established presence; switching account type or reaching a guessed follower number does not guarantee access (Meta’s eligibility guidance). Marketplace does not validate every message, replace a written agreement or decide whether a campaign is suitable.
Pitch a specific idea, not just a request to collaborate
A useful pitch is brief, personalized and easy to answer. Show why your audience fits, identify a relevant product or campaign, propose a deliverable and link to proof. For example:
Hi [Name], I make practical skincare videos for an audience interested in simple routines and sensitive-skin products. I noticed [specific product or campaign]. I’d like to propose a 30-second Reel showing a three-step routine, plus three Story frames answering common product questions. Here are two examples of similar tutorial content: [links]. If you’re planning a [launch or seasonal] campaign, I’d be glad to send a package and rate. Best, [Name and contact].
Adapt the idea to the brand rather than sending the same note to everyone. Include a relevant performance or audience detail if it strengthens the case. If there is no response, one or two polite follow-ups are enough; then move on without repeated messages.
Set a price based on the work and rights
There is no dependable universal rate for an Instagram collaboration. A quote should reflect the scope, audience, production, market and rights. One practical framework is:
Base creative fee + publishing/distribution fee + usage-rights fee + paid-ad fee + exclusivity fee + any rush, travel or production expenses.

Consider the number and type of deliverables, filming and editing time, whether you appear on camera, revision burden, deadlines, recent performance, audience fit and any demonstrated sales results. Specify whether raw footage or source files are included; they are additional deliverables, not an automatic part of a post.
Separate what the brand pays you to create from what it pays to reuse. Organic reposting, website use, email use, paid social, partnership ads, retailer use and perpetual rights are distinct permissions. Do not include paid advertising rights by default unless you intend to grant them. If you offer a rate card, present it as a starting point and define what it includes.
Agree on the terms before you start
Confirm the deal in a written agreement or clearly documented exchange before filming or posting. The fee is only one part of the value; delivery, payment timing and licensing terms can change whether a campaign is worthwhile.
- Deliverables: List each post, Reel, Story frame, Live or other asset; length and format; tags, links, codes and cross-posting; and whether alternate edits or raw files are required.
- Timeline: Set dates for the brief, product arrival, draft, brand feedback, publication and campaign end. Agree how late feedback affects the schedule.
- Revisions and approval: Define included revision rounds, what counts as a revision versus a reshoot, and who approves the concept or final work. Clarify that you will not make claims you cannot substantiate or describe an experience you did not have.
- Payment and cancellation: Record the total fee, currency, payment method, schedule, any deposit, taxes or withholding, late-payment terms and what is owed if the brand cancels after work has begun.
- Usage rights: Name the channels, territory, duration and permitted edits. Distinguish organic social use from websites, email, paid ads, partnership ads and sublicensing to retailers or distributors.
- Exclusivity: Define competitor brands or products, category, territory, platforms and duration. A vague ban on “competing brands” can block unrelated work.
- Disclosure and claims: Agree how the relationship will be disclosed, what product claims are authorized and who is responsible for substantiating them. A contract cannot make a false or misleading endorsement acceptable.
Watch for language such as “in perpetuity,” “worldwide,” “all media,” “irrevocable,” “transferable” or “any purpose.” Those terms can grant broad, lasting rights. Narrow the scope or price it accordingly rather than treating it as equivalent to a single organic post.
Disclose payment, gifts and affiliate relationships
Meta requires its paid partnership label for branded content, including exchanges involving cash, free or loaned products and affiliate compensation. Its guidance covers supported surfaces such as Feed, Stories, Live and Reels (Meta’s branded content policy; Meta’s instructions for the paid partnership label).
Use the branded-content tools while creating the content and select the paid partnership option and the correct business partner. The business may need to approve the tag before its name appears. Check that the selected brand is correct; Meta says the label can be removed if the partner denies the request (Meta’s label instructions).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor U.S. creators, the FTC says endorsements should clearly and conspicuously disclose material connections. Place the disclosure where viewers will notice it, close to the endorsement, and use language they understand. Do not bury it in a bio, behind a “more” expansion, among unrelated hashtags or in ambiguous wording such as “collab” or “thanks” (FTC endorsement guidance). Instagram’s label is important, but it may not satisfy every legal requirement in every country or format.

Describe personal experience accurately. Do not claim to have tried a product you have not used, or make unsupported health, weight-loss, medical, income, environmental or performance claims. Be especially careful with before-and-after content and promises of guaranteed results.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Treat paid amplification as a separate permission
If a brand wants to run your content as an ad, confirm the campaign duration, platforms, geographic targeting, use of your handle, editing permissions, post-campaign use and whether the permission can be revoked. Price this separately from creation and organic posting.
Meta says creators can generate a partnership ad code and share it with an advertiser to boost eligible content (Meta’s partnership ad and ad-code guidance). Meta also notes that a post may remain boostable if archived while the relevant permission is enabled. Match permission settings to the agreement’s end date, and do not assume that archiving a post ends ad rights.

A product-only deal can be reasonable when you genuinely want the item, there is no required post and little work is involved. It is usually poor compensation for a scripted Reel, multiple Stories, revisions, exclusivity, raw footage or ad rights. Ask what is mandatory, what rights the brand wants, whether the product is yours to keep and whether any positive opinion is expected. “Exposure” is not a substitute for payment when the brand is requesting substantial commercial work.
Buying a product first can be legitimate in a documented reimbursement arrangement, but get the maximum amount, proof required, reimbursement deadline, cancellation terms and ownership of the product in writing. Treat requests for registration, shipping, release, customs, activation or verification fees as serious warning signs.
- Verify the company and contact through its official website, using independently found contact details.
- Do not share passwords, login codes or account access, and do not install unknown software at a stranger’s request.
- Be wary of suspicious email domains, urgent pressure to switch channels, unusually large promises for trivial work or a contract without an identifiable business and payment terms.
- Never send money back from an overpayment or check, and do not buy through an unknown site just to qualify for an offer.
Turn a first campaign into repeat work
Deliver the agreed work on time, keep the brand informed if a deadline is at risk and save a copy of the approved deliverables and final terms. After publication, share the results the brand asked for—such as reach, views, saves, clicks or sales—using accurate figures and the relevant reporting period. Then suggest one practical follow-up idea or ask about upcoming campaigns. A concise, useful recap makes it easier for a brand to assess another project without overpromising results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can small creators get brand deals?
Yes. A smaller creator can offer a focused audience, strong community fit or skilled UGC production. Show relevant work and honest performance data rather than relying on follower count alone.

How many followers do I need to partner with brands?
There is no universal number. Brand needs and Instagram feature eligibility vary; some deals value content production more than audience size.
Should I contact brands or wait for them to find me?
You can do both. A clear profile may encourage inbound inquiries, while targeted outreach lets you propose ideas to brands that suit your audience.
Do I need a contract for an Instagram collaboration?
Get the scope, payment, timeline, usage rights, exclusivity, revisions and cancellation terms in writing before doing the work. A signed agreement is useful for larger or more complex deals.
What if Instagram Creator Marketplace is unavailable to me?
Use direct outreach, agencies, creator platforms, affiliate programs and professional networking. Marketplace access varies, and its absence does not prevent you from pitching brands.
Can I turn down a brand deal?
Yes. Decline offers that do not fit your audience, require claims you cannot support, demand unclear or excessive rights, or do not compensate the requested work fairly.
Should I let a brand use my Reel in ads?
Only if you agree to the paid-use scope and fee. Specify duration, platforms, territory, editing and whether the brand may continue using the ad after the campaign ends.
