Seattle startup Aerial announced a $2 million pre-seed round on May 13, 2024, led by Fuse with participation from Pack Ventures. Its pitch: use AI to turn scattered corporate and legal documents into organized, connected company information—a concept co-founder Doug Logan likened to “QuickBooks for a bunch of the legal documents.” The phrase describes a record-keeping analogy, not accounting software or a replacement for legal advice.

The corporate-document problem Aerial targeted

Companies build up incorporation records, financing agreements, ownership information, contracts, board materials and other documents across folders, email and outside advisers. When a company raises money or prepares for a transaction, staff may have to locate and sort those records, check which versions are current and connect documents that refer to one another.

That makes the challenge more than storage. A company may possess the relevant files yet lack a reliable, searchable picture of what they collectively say. Aerial’s thesis was that software could reduce the manual work of finding, categorizing and cross-referencing corporate information for fundraising, diligence and routine operations.

What Aerial said its product would do

In 2024 coverage, Aerial was described as using machine learning, natural-language processing and deep-learning techniques to extract information from unstructured business documents, organize it and link related information across files. The intended result was a more structured repository—or, in the company’s positioning, a “system of record”—for information needed to run and fund a business. GeekWire’s May 13, 2024 report and Aerial’s company profile describe that product ambition.

The kinds of records relevant to such a workflow can include formation and charter documents, cap-table or ownership records, prior financing materials, material contracts, board approvals, intellectual-property assignments and employment agreements. That list describes common fundraising and diligence materials; it is not a verified list of Aerial’s supported document types.

The published description does not establish extraction accuracy, error rates, supported file formats, integrations, security certifications or data-retention terms. Nor does organizing a file establish that its contents are accurate, complete or legally sound. A user still needs to verify important extracted details against the underlying document and use qualified professionals for legal or accounting judgments.

Why Logan compared it with QuickBooks

QuickBooks organizes financial transactions into a structured accounting record. Logan’s comparison suggested a similar organizing layer for corporate and legal information: rather than leaving business records as disconnected files, make them easier to find and relate to one another over time. Logan made the comparison in GeekWire’s report.

The analogy has limits. Aerial was not described as bookkeeping, tax software or a tool for giving legal advice. Its stated role was to make company information easier to organize and retrieve, potentially reducing administrative work for founders and professionals—not eliminating lawyers, accountants or bankers.

Founders and the product thesis

Co-founder and CEO Doug Logan had spent five years as a corporate lawyer at K&L Gates in Seattle. He said that work exposed him to information moving among companies, legal teams, finance teams, investors and prospective buyers, and to the effort required to assemble and manage it.

Co-founder and CTO Michael Li joined in January 2022. GeekWire described Li as a data-science expert with a Ph.D. in computational and applied mathematics from Princeton University; he was based in Washington, D.C., when the outlet reported on the funding. The founder backgrounds and product rationale are reported in GeekWire’s account.

Where a product like Aerial fits—and where it differs

Aerial’s pitch combined ongoing corporate-document organization with AI-assisted extraction and fundraising or diligence readiness. That overlaps with several established software categories, but the core jobs are not identical.

Category Primary job How it differs from Aerial’s stated pitch
Virtual data room Controlled sharing of documents for a financing, acquisition or other diligence process Typically centers on transaction sharing rather than maintaining a company-wide record over time.
Cap-table platform Tracking equity ownership, securities, grants and stakeholders Focuses on ownership records rather than broad corporate and legal-document organization.
Contract-lifecycle management Contract intake, review workflows, approvals, obligations and renewals Centers on managing contracts through their lifecycle, not necessarily the full set of information used to run and fund a company.
Document-management system Storage, search, permissions and version control May organize files without the specialized extraction and cross-referencing Aerial described.
Cloud storage Convenient file storage and sharing Does not necessarily provide structured corporate-data extraction or diligence-oriented relationships.
Outside counsel or legal operations Human review, interpretation and transaction support Can supply professional judgment and accountability that document-organization software does not itself provide.

What a company should verify before relying on AI-organized records

For any platform handling sensitive corporate material, buyers should assess the controls and workflow rather than assume that a polished repository is a dependable source of truth. The available 2024 descriptions do not establish Aerial’s answers to the questions below.

  • Coverage and extraction: Which file types and document families can it process, including scans, spreadsheets, email attachments and amendments? Can extracted parties, dates and terms be checked against the original page?
  • Review and traceability: Can staff correct classifications or extracted values? Is there a record of who changed a result and when?
  • Conflicts and versions: Does the system distinguish a signed agreement from a draft, identify amendments and flag apparently conflicting records rather than silently choosing one?
  • Security and privacy: What encryption, access controls, tenant separation, retention and deletion policies apply? Is customer data used to train models, and which subprocessors can access it?
  • Export and continuity: Can the company retrieve original files, metadata and audit history in usable formats if it changes vendors or the service becomes unavailable?
  • Integrations and upkeep: Does it connect to the storage, e-signature, equity, accounting and collaboration tools the company uses? Who is responsible for keeping the record current after a financing or corporate change?

AI extraction can speed up organization, but OCR mistakes, duplicate files, missing exhibits, overlooked approvals or misidentified subsidiaries can create misleading records. A data room can also become stale, and broad permissions can expose confidential information. The practical safeguard is human verification of material information and access to the source documents; an organized record is not the same as legal review.

What is known about Aerial’s status now

As of August 16, 2026, Aerial’s current operating status, product availability, customer count, revenue and pricing could not be independently verified through a reliable current first-party source. Its company profile identifies its website as AerialOps.io, but a website reference alone does not establish that the product is currently available. A third-party listing’s “probably closed” label is likewise not enough to establish that the company has shut down. Neither active operations nor closure should be treated as confirmed.
