Apple did deliver M4 Macs before the end of 2024, but it did not finish the Mac rollout that year: the M4 MacBook Air arrived in March 2025. The original report was broadly right about the timing and Apple’s AI emphasis, though M4 was a general-purpose chip family—not an AI-only processor—and it is no longer the current Mac generation.
What Apple reportedly planned in 2024
In April 2024, Bloomberg-reported plans described an M4 family with at least three variants, a late-2024 start for Mac updates, and further releases into early 2025. Reuters repeated the report, attributing it to Bloomberg and unnamed sources. The reported roadmap also pointed to a stronger Neural Engine and a refresh across much of the Mac range. These were reported plans, not an Apple announcement; specifications, final release dates, and prices were not established at the time. MacRumors’ summary of the report and Reuters’ account preserve that distinction.
When M4 arrived, and which Macs followed
Apple introduced the base M4 on May 7, 2024, in the iPad Pro—months before the first M4 Macs. Apple said it was built using second-generation 3-nanometer technology and had 28 billion transistors. The announced iPad Pro configuration included a 10-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine. Those are Apple’s specifications for that chip and device configuration, not a guarantee that every M4 product has identical core counts. Apple’s M4 announcement also included Apple’s own performance comparisons; those should be read as company test claims, not universal results across applications or devices.
| Date | Milestone | What it means for the forecast |

Apple’s announcements document the iMac, Mac mini, and MacBook Pro launches. The M4 MacBook Air was announced March 5 and became available March 12, 2025. In the U.S. at launch, the 13-inch model started at $999 and the 15-inch at $1,199; it started with 16GB unified memory. Apple also listed up to 18 hours of battery life, a 12MP Center Stage camera, and support for two external displays in addition to the built-in display. These are launch-period U.S. price and Apple specification claims, not current prices or independent battery-test results. Apple’s MacBook Air announcement has the details.

What “focused on AI” meant in practice
M4’s AI positioning described a combination of hardware and software rather than a single specialized generative-AI engine. The Neural Engine accelerates machine-learning tasks; the CPU and GPU can also contribute, while unified memory lets those components access a shared memory pool. Memory capacity and bandwidth matter when a workload must keep a model and its working data available locally. Power efficiency matters for sustained tasks on portable devices.
Apple highlighted machine-learning accelerators, the Neural Engine, GPU improvements, and memory bandwidth across the M4 family. For M4 Pro and M4 Max, Apple said the Neural Engine was up to twice as fast as the prior generation. That is an Apple “up to” comparison, not a claim that every AI app runs twice as fast. Text generation, transcription, image generation, photo effects, and video processing stress different parts of a system. Software support, model size, quantization, memory, and thermal limits all affect real performance. Apple’s M4 Pro and M4 Max announcement describes its claims.

Apple Intelligence did not require M4
Apple Intelligence availability on Mac extended to M1-and-newer systems when supported operating-system versions, languages, and regions were in place. M4 therefore was not the sole or necessary Mac entry point to Apple Intelligence. Eligibility and speed are separate questions: an older compatible Mac could access supported features, while a newer or higher-memory configuration could provide more performance headroom. Feature availability can vary by language and region.
Local AI still depends on memory and software
An M4 Mac can run supported workloads locally, which may reduce reliance on a network connection and keep processing on the device. That does not make every model or app local, nor does it mean a local model matches the capability of the largest hosted services. Base configurations are more suitable for everyday features and smaller models; larger models, long context windows, or simultaneous professional apps can be constrained by memory. M4 Pro or M4 Max may suit sustained professional work, but the chip label alone is not a substitute for checking the memory configuration and the app’s support for Apple silicon acceleration.

How to interpret the performance evidence
Apple published workload-specific comparisons, including claims for Mac mini CPU and GPU performance against M1 Mac mini and an on-device speech-to-text comparison in MacWhisper. Such “up to” results depend on the selected product, application, workload, configuration, and test method. They should not be generalized into a blanket statement that M4 is twice as fast at AI.
Early third-party Geekbench results reported by MacRumors offered an initial CPU comparison, but they are not a substitute for sustained tests of each device, chip variant, memory configuration, and application. MacRumors’ early benchmark report is useful context, not a comprehensive verdict on battery life, thermal behavior, GPU work, or local-model performance.

Should you buy an M4 Mac now?
As of August 18, 2026, M4 is a previous-generation Mac platform. Apple’s March 2026 announcement moved MacBook Air to M5 and MacBook Pro to M5 Pro and M5 Max, while retaining M4 in the iPad Air lineup. This is a time-sensitive generation distinction, not a statement that every product category has left M4 behind. Apple’s March 2026 availability announcement identifies those products.
- Consider M4 when the discount is meaningful. A sale, refurbished unit, or trade-in deal can make a previous-generation system attractive if its performance and expected support window suit your needs. Compare actual configurations and seller terms rather than relying on old launch prices.
- Compare newer models at full price. If buying new at close to retail, compare the current-generation equivalent for performance and remaining support horizon. Apple’s Mac store shows live catalog options; prices and availability vary by configuration and market.
- Match the chip to the workload. Base M4 suits mainstream productivity and lighter creative work. M4 Pro is aimed at heavier development, multitasking, and professional projects. M4 Max makes more sense for demanding GPU-heavy work such as high-end video, 3D, or machine learning than for ordinary office tasks.
- Prioritize memory for local models. A higher-memory configuration can be more useful than a faster chip with too little available memory for the model and other apps you need to run.
- Choose Mac or iPad by workflow. An M4 iPad is not interchangeable with an M4 Mac: operating system, desktop application availability, ports, multitasking, and accessories differ.
- Use cloud services when the task needs them. Hosted models may offer capabilities beyond local options, but typically require internet access and may have recurring costs.
For a secondhand purchase, check the exact model, memory, storage, condition, warranty, and return terms. Trade-in estimates change by model and condition; Apple’s Trade In page provides current estimates. For a new high-cost laptop, compare current AppleCare+ coverage and price before deciding; terms vary by device, country, and plan. Apple’s Mac support plans page describes coverage options.

Verdict on the year-end prediction
The 2024 report was directionally accurate: Apple introduced M4 that spring, shipped the first M4 Macs in November, and made AI capability a prominent part of the product story. It was not a complete year-end Mac transition, because the MacBook Air followed in March 2025. The lasting buying lesson is to assess the actual device, memory, software, price, and workload—not to treat “AI-focused” as proof that M4 is required for Apple Intelligence or that every AI task will be dramatically faster.
