Seattle-based robotic coffee company Artly raised more than $340,000 from investors in roughly the first week of its 2023 StartEngine campaign, GeekWire reported on August 16. GeekWire later updated the total to more than $518,000. The campaign offered company equity—not coffee, robot preorders, or rewards—and its nearly $100 million valuation was not the amount raised.
What Artly’s StartEngine campaign offered
The offering was made by Blue Hill Tech Inc., Artly’s corporate entity, under Regulation Crowdfunding, or Reg CF. Investors were offered Series CF preferred stock through StartEngine. The SEC offering memorandum set a $9.48 share price, a $492.96 minimum investment (52 shares), and an implied company valuation of $99.97 million. Artly sought $1.23 million by selling up to 130,000 shares; GeekWire reported a November 7, 2023 deadline. These were historical terms, not a current offer.
Reg CF lets eligible private companies offer securities through a registered intermediary and requires prescribed disclosures. Unlike a rewards campaign, this one gave investors an ownership interest subject to the stock’s terms. Artly’s offering memorandum warned that the investment was speculative, illiquid, and could result in the loss of the entire investment. Private shares may have no practical resale market, and future fundraising can dilute an investor’s ownership. The valuation in an offering is not a promise of future value or a return.

What Artly does
Artly paired a consumer-facing coffee-shop business, Artly Coffee, with Artly AI, which rents robotic coffee systems to other businesses under a robot-as-a-service model. Its system uses a robotic arm and software to prepare drinks by reproducing barista movements. The offering memorandum described technologies including imitation learning, computer vision, robotic control, and large language models.

Artly’s offering materials said the company had served more than 350,000 cups and deployed 19 robots across nine locations. Those are company-provided claims in the SEC filing, not independently verified operating results. A robot-based service also does not necessarily mean a fully autonomous or unmanned shop: restocking, cleaning, repairs, quality control, and customer service can still require people.
Why Artly chose crowdfunding
CEO and co-founder Meng Wang told GeekWire that Artly was not actively fundraising when StartEngine approached the company. Wang said existing customers had expressed interest in investing and that crowdfunding offered a way for customers and other supporters to become early owners. He also cited Artly’s consumer-facing business as a reason a broad investor base could make sense, and said the decision was not primarily a response to a downturn in venture capital.

Growth came with substantial losses
Artly had previously raised about $10 million from venture investors, according to GeekWire, including an $8.3 million pre-Series A round in 2022 that the publication said implied a valuation of about $45 million. The StartEngine offering’s $99.97 million valuation was therefore a marked increase from that reported comparison; it was an offering valuation, not capital raised.
GeekWire reported that Artly’s crowdfunding disclosures showed revenue of $911,907 for 2022, up from $109,257 in 2021, alongside a net loss of more than $2 million in 2022 and a $596,059 loss in 2021. The figures show fast revenue growth while the company remained loss-making. Artly’s offering memorandum separately cited approximately 40% margins at certain locations; that claim should not be confused with company-wide profitability, and the filing’s description does not establish that the figure applied to every location.

How Artly said it would use the proceeds
GeekWire reported that Artly planned to use the money for research and development and inventory. Its offering materials also framed the business ambitions around expanding the retail network, deploying additional robotic systems, and scaling coffee operations. Those goals describe intended uses and plans, not proof that the campaign proceeds achieved them.

What the campaign does—and does not—tell investors
The campaign joined an automation story to a conventional early-stage investing risk profile. A robot-as-a-service model could, in principle, create recurring business revenue, while robotic preparation may support consistency or reduce some labor needs. But the available campaign figures do not answer several questions central to the economics:
- What it costs to manufacture, install, maintain, and operate each robot, and who pays those costs.
- How much human labor remains for restocking, cleaning, repairs, food safety, and customer support.
- How revenue and costs divide between Artly’s own coffee operations and rentals to other businesses.
- Whether reported location margins include company overhead, and how quickly a site can recover its equipment and build-out costs.
- How downtime, a small number of locations, future dilution, or competitors could affect results and investor returns.
These are material uncertainties, not evidence that the model will succeed or fail. The offering memorandum’s risk warnings and reported losses matter alongside revenue growth and deployment claims when assessing the investment.

The campaign is a historical event, not a current offer
The $340,000 and $518,000 figures refer to progress reported during the 2023 StartEngine campaign. Later SEC filings, including an annual disclosure and a 2026 amendment, show a continuing filing trail but do not establish that the original campaign remains open or that the same terms are available now. Do not rely on the 2023 share price, minimum investment, or deadline as current investment terms.
