Editor’s note: This 2026 guide evaluates current U.S. product features, fees, limits, and support policies. It does not claim hands-on testing where none was performed. The most important distinction is between a mobile wallet—used to pay merchants with a stored card—and a peer-to-peer payment service—used to send money to another person.

For iPhone owners, Apple Pay and Apple Cash are the most integrated choice. Google Wallet is the strongest general Android wallet, while Samsung Wallet makes the most sense for Galaxy users. For sending money, Venmo, Cash App, PayPal, and Zelle serve different purposes rather than being interchangeable.

Best mobile payment apps at a glance

App Best for Important limitation
Apple Pay / Apple Cash iPhone users who want merchant payments and built-in transfers Apple Cash send-and-receive access requires an eligible Apple device, U.S. residency, and age 18 or older
Google Wallet Android contactless payments, passes, transit, and IDs It is not a U.S. Venmo-style peer-to-peer app
Samsung Wallet Galaxy phones and watches, especially Samsung-specific wallet features Only supported Samsung devices, cards, accounts, and regions work
Venmo Social payments, splitting bills, and participating merchant QR payments Instant transfers cost 1.75%; credit-card-funded payments cost 3%
Cash App Peer payments plus debit, direct deposit, savings, investing, and Cash App Pay Instant-transfer fees vary from 0.5% to 2.5%
PayPal Online shopping, merchant payments, international transfers, and payment links Features, fees, and protections vary by transaction type
Zelle Direct bank-account transfers through a participating bank or credit union The standalone Zelle app was discontinued

Apple Pay and Apple Cash: best for iPhone users

Apple Pay is the merchant-payment wallet built into the Wallet app. It can store eligible credit and debit cards for in-store, online, and in-app purchases. Apple Cash is a separate digital card in Wallet for person-to-person transfers and spending through Apple Pay.

Apple Cash can be sent from Messages or Wallet, and Apple’s Tap to Cash feature lets compatible users exchange money by bringing devices together. To add a card, use Wallet > + > Debit or Credit Card. To send or request money, use Wallet > Apple Cash card > Send or Request. To move money to a bank, use Wallet > Apple Cash card > More (…) > Transfer to Bank.

  • Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.
  • Accept contactless payments, chip cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay from anywhere, with improved connectivity, extended battery life, and enhanced security. Pay one low rate for every tap or dip.
  • No long-term commitments or contracts, no monthly fees- and with offline payments, keep taking payments for up to 24 hours.
  • Safely and securely accepts payments anywhere. Plus, get data security, 24/7 fraud prevention, and payment-dispute management at no extra cost.
  • Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.

Apple Cash fees and limits

  • Standard transfer to a U.S. bank account: free, typically one to three business days.
  • Instant transfer to an eligible U.S.-issued debit card: 1.7%, with a $0.25 minimum and $25 maximum.
  • Bank transfers: up to $10,000 per transfer and $20,000 in seven days.
  • Apple Cash Family and Tap to Cash: $2,000 rolling seven-day send-and-receive limit.

Full Apple Cash send-and-receive functionality requires the user to be at least 18 and a U.S. resident. Family Sharing can make Apple Cash available to a younger user, but that does not necessarily provide every adult account feature. Instant Transfer also requires an eligible U.S.-issued debit card. Enter bank-routing information carefully: a transfer sent to the wrong account may be difficult or impossible to recover.

Google Wallet: best general Android wallet

Google Wallet is the Android wallet for payment cards, passes, tickets, transit, keys, and IDs. Google Pay is still the branding used for some online, in-app, and tap-to-pay transactions, but the U.S. Google Pay app’s peer-to-peer functions ended on June 4, 2024. Do not choose Google Wallet expecting a U.S. Venmo replacement.

Add a card through Google Wallet > Add to Wallet > Payment card > New credit or debit card. For payment settings, use Google Wallet > Profile picture > Payment setup. At a configured contactless terminal, unlock the phone and hold it near the reader; Google Wallet does not need to be open.

Google Wallet requirements

Contactless payments require Android 9 or later, NFC hardware with NFC enabled, Google Wallet as the default NFC wallet, a supported card and country, a screen lock, current Google Play Services and Google Wallet software, and a non-rooted device. Google Wallet does not support Android work profiles.

Cards may transfer to a new phone, but they must be set up again for tap-to-pay transactions. A phone also does not always need an internet connection at the checkout reader once it is configured and unlocked; internet is more relevant to setup and account operations.

One recent change matters to anyone with an old Google Pay balance: on June 22, 2026, the virtual Google Pay Balance Card was removed as a payment method. Remaining funds can be withdrawn through Google Wallet > balance profile button > Transfer out.

Square Reader for magstripe (USB-C)
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Get set up quickly with no long-term commitments. Download the Square Point of Sale app for free, create an account, and start taking payments anywhere.
  • Run your business all in one place with the free Square Point of Sale app. Track your sales, manage inventory, accept tips, send receipts digitally, and more.
  • Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.

Samsung Wallet: best for Galaxy owners

Samsung Wallet combines payment cards with membership cards, gift cards, boarding passes, keys, health passes, and other digital items. Its appeal is greatest for someone already using a supported Samsung phone or Galaxy Watch and Samsung’s device ecosystem.

Add a card through Samsung Wallet > Menu or All > Payment cards > Add (+). To make it the default NFC wallet, go to Settings > Connections > NFC and contactless payment > Contactless payments > Samsung Pay. Samsung Pay functionality is part of Samsung Wallet; it should not be treated as a separate current app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Samsung Wallet requires a compatible device, active Samsung account, supported payment card, registered fingerprint or Wallet PIN, and supported payment hardware. Some issuers require additional authentication, ATM-only cards cannot be added, and an internet connection is required while adding cards.

Do not rely on Samsung Wallet as a complete transaction ledger. Card issuers determine which transactions appear, so the wallet may not show everything. Hotels and similar merchants may also create a temporary $1 authorization before the final amount posts. Samsung’s April 29, 2026 release notes added support for buying an Atlanta MARTA transit card and certain digital-home-key features.

Venmo: best for social payments and bill splitting

Venmo is designed around person-to-person payments, requests, shared expenses, merchant payments, and participating U.S. businesses that accept Venmo QR payments. It is a better fit than a wallet when the main task is paying a friend, collecting a roommate’s share, or splitting a dinner bill.

Venmo has two QR concepts that are easy to confuse. A personal Venmo Me QR code identifies your profile. Show to Pay displays the QR code used for in-store payment. Open the options from Me tab > QR code button next to profile picture. Choose Venmo me for your profile code, or use Me tab > QR code button > Show to Pay at a participating merchant. To scan someone else’s code, tap Scan at the top of the app.

Square Terminal - Credit Card Machine to Accept All Payments | Mobile POS
  • With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
  • Process chip cards in just two seconds.
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.

Venmo fees

Action Cost
Send using balance, bank account, or debit card $0
Send using a credit card 3%
Standard bank transfer $0, typically one to three business days
Instant Transfer 1.75%, $0.25 minimum and $25 maximum
Receive a payment marked for goods and services 2.99% seller transaction fee

In-store QR payment requires Venmo version 7.53 or later, camera permission, an internet connection, a payment method that covers the purchase, and a participating U.S. merchant. A Venmo QR code will not work universally at every card terminal.

Cash App: best for an all-purpose money app

Cash App goes beyond peer payments. Depending on eligibility and account setup, it includes Cash App Pay, payment links, a debit card, direct deposit, savings, and investing. Cash App Pay works by scanning a QR code or selecting Cash App Pay at supported online or in-person checkout.

Payment links, introduced in late 2025, allow someone to pay a request through a link. A person who does not already use Cash App may be able to pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay, but the link still requires the recipient to complete the payment process.

Cash App fees

  • Standard transfer to a linked account: free, typically one to three business days.
  • Instant Transfer: 0.5% to 2.5%, with a $0.25 minimum and $75 maximum. The exact fee appears before confirmation.
  • In-network ATM fee: $2.50, although eligibility rules may allow reimbursement.

Cash App’s range of features creates an important bookkeeping trap: an app balance, linked bank account, Cash App Card purchase, direct deposit, and investing account are not the same source of funds. Check which balance or funding method a transaction uses before assuming money came from—or went to—your bank.

PayPal: best for online purchases and international use

PayPal remains the broadest choice for online checkout, merchant payments, person-to-person transfers, QR payments, payment links, and international transfers. It also supports Venmo-to-PayPal transfers, making it useful when people use different services.

For a personal QR code, open PayPal app home screen > QR code button > Your code. You can save it with QR code button > Your code > download icon. PayPal says personal QR payments require both the sender and recipient to have the PayPal app. Fees and purchase protections depend on whether a transaction is a personal transfer, merchant purchase, international payment, or another category.

  • Accepts magstripe credit card payments, including those from Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express (fees apply).
  • App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).

PayPal payment-request links expire after 10 days if unpaid. The recipient must open the link and sign in to PayPal or PayPal.com to finish the transaction.

PayPal Tap to Pay

Tap to Pay is a business feature, not a general way for consumers to accept card payments. Setup is under Menu > Tap to Pay on iPhone or Menu > Tap to Pay under Get Paid, followed by Get Started. It requires a Business PayPal account. iPhone users need an iPhone XS or newer running the latest iOS; Android users need Android 8.1 or later, NFC, and Google Play Services. Tips are not currently supported through Tap to Pay. Refunds are handled through Wallet > Activity > transaction > Refund.

Zelle: best for bank-to-bank transfers

Zelle is most useful when both people already bank with participating institutions and want money to move directly between eligible checking or savings accounts. It is not an independent wallet balance and should not be described as a merchant-payment service with the same protections as a credit card.

The standalone Zelle app was discontinued in 2025. Users must access Zelle through a participating bank or credit-union app. Because each institution controls its own interface, limits, and eligibility, there is no universal menu path. Look inside the bank app’s payments or transfers area rather than downloading a supposed Zelle replacement.

Zelle says limits are set by the bank or credit union. According to Zelle’s limits FAQ, its cited Q3 2024 survey found that 99.44% of linked consumer checking and savings accounts did not charge a fee to send, receive, or request money, but the individual institution’s policy controls. Both parties generally need to be enrolled. Confirm the recipient’s details before sending: an incorrectly entered payment to an enrolled recipient may be difficult or impossible to reverse.

How to choose the right payment app

  1. Start with the phone. Use Apple Pay on an iPhone, Google Wallet on most Android phones, and Samsung Wallet if you rely on a supported Galaxy phone or watch.
  2. Decide whether you need a wallet or a transfer service. For tapping a card at a store, choose a wallet. For paying a friend, choose the service your recipient actually uses.
  3. Compare transfer speed. Standard bank transfers are generally free but take one to three business days. Instant transfers cost money: Apple Cash charges 1.7%, Venmo charges 1.75%, and Cash App charges 0.5%–2.5%.
  4. Check the merchant’s support. Venmo and Cash App QR payments depend on participating merchants. PayPal QR payments may require both parties to use PayPal.
  5. Review the funding source. A credit card can trigger a 3% Venmo fee. Cash App payments may draw from different balances or linked products. Zelle uses eligible bank accounts rather than an app balance.
  6. Confirm before sending. Peer-to-peer transfers are often difficult to reverse, especially after money reaches an enrolled or incorrectly selected recipient.

FAQ

  • Mobile card reader that accepts payments anywhere & anytime
  • Use the free SumUp App on your smartphone or tablet to start accepting transactions

Is Google Wallet the same as Venmo?

No. Google Wallet is primarily an Android wallet for cards, passes, transit, IDs, and contactless payments. U.S. Google Pay peer-to-peer payments ended on June 4, 2024, so Google Wallet is not a U.S. service for sending money to friends.

Which payment apps charge for instant transfers?

Apple Cash charges 1.7%, Venmo charges 1.75%, and Cash App charges a variable 0.5%–2.5%. Each also offers a generally free standard bank transfer that usually takes one to three business days.

Can I still download the Zelle app?

No. The standalone Zelle app was discontinued in 2025. Zelle remains available through participating banks and credit unions, with the institution determining the menu path, limits, and fees.

The Bottom Line

Choose Apple Pay and Apple Cash if you use an iPhone, Google Wallet for a general Android wallet, and Samsung Wallet for a Galaxy-centered setup. For person-to-person payments, Venmo is strongest for social bill splitting, Cash App offers the broadest money-and-banking feature set, PayPal is the most versatile for online and international transactions, and Zelle is the simplest bank-to-bank option when your financial institution supports it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before confirming any transfer, check the recipient, funding source, delivery speed, and fee. “Instant” is not free on Apple Cash, Venmo, or Cash App, and neither a familiar brand nor a QR code guarantees that a payment can be reversed.
