Google’s offer to trade an eligible iPad for a dockless Pixel Tablet was real—but it was a short-lived May 2024 promotion, not a deal you can claim now. The promotion was reportedly scheduled to end May 20, 2024, but Google cut the $399 trade-in value around May 18. The offer made the 128GB tablet effectively free before tax in exchange for your iPad; it did not include the Charging Speaker Dock. Contemporary coverage reported the early cancellation. As of August 2026, the historical promotion is expired.
How the 2024 offer worked
Google introduced a dockless Pixel Tablet configuration priced at $399. During the promotion, certain iPads received a matching $399 trade-in credit, which could offset the tablet’s entire listed price before taxes and other charges. The offer applied to the tablet, not automatically to the speaker dock. These were the prices reported during the promotion, not a claim about current availability or pricing. PhoneArena’s May 9, 2024 report described the offer and product configurations.

“Free” therefore meant that a $399 credit could match the tablet’s $399 pre-tax price. The customer surrendered the iPad, and might still owe sales tax or pay for add-ons. The dock was a separate accessory or part of a more expensive bundle.
Which iPads qualified?
The contemporary report described eligibility as beginning with the 2018 sixth-generation iPad and extending to newer qualifying iPad models. That was a description of this particular promotion, not a rule that every iPad released in 2018 or later would qualify. Exact model, storage, condition, and availability mattered. Google’s current trade-in eligibility is selected in the purchase flow and can change. Check the live estimate for the exact device rather than assuming the 2024 value or eligibility still applies. Google explains how to check current trade-in eligibility.
Why Google reportedly ended the offer early
The offer was advertised through May 20, 2024, but reports said Google reduced the sixth-generation iPad’s value to about $75 around May 18. PhoneArena attributed the early change to the promotion’s popularity: buyers reportedly purchased inexpensive used sixth-generation iPads and submitted them for the much higher credit. That is the reported explanation, not a detailed public account of Google’s internal decision-making. The May 18 report covered the cancellation and revised value.
What about orders already placed?
The same report said Google would honor the original trade-in value for customers who completed the deal while the promotion was active. That reported assurance applied to qualifying orders made before the reduction; it does not establish that someone who only started an estimate, ordered after the change, or submitted a device that failed inspection was protected.

What the dockless tablet included—and left out
Dockless meant the standalone tablet did not come with the Charging Speaker Dock; it did not mean the tablet was unusable or unable to charge. Google lists the Pixel Tablet as Wi-Fi-only and markets its display as an 11-inch screen. Google’s product page has current product information.
The dock adds a magnetic docking interface, pogo-pin charging, and a built-in full-range speaker. Google lists maximum 15W charging and a 43.5mm speaker for the dock. Google’s Charging Speaker Dock page details those features. Buyers who did not want the room-based charging and speaker setup could use the tablet without it.

- Open the Google Store Pixel Tablet page.
- Select a color and the 128GB dockless configuration.
- Choose Add trade-in.
- Select the iPad model and condition, then review the displayed estimate.
- Complete checkout while the promotional estimate was active.
- Send the iPad through Google’s trade-in process.
The May 2024 report described this flow. Its steps do not restore the expired $399 offer.

For a current Google Store trade-in, start with the live estimate. Google’s U.S. trade-in guidance says the estimate and final value depend on the device and the program terms shown for that order. A credit can be reduced after inspection if the submitted device does not match the declared model or condition. Google lists condition factors that can affect value.

- Choose a product on the Google Store and select Trade in your device or Get estimate.
- Enter the exact manufacturer, model, storage size, and condition, then review the estimate at checkout.
- Submit the new-device order and follow the instructions for receiving a trade-in kit, if one is provided.
- Send the device by the applicable deadline and retain the shipping confirmation.
- Wait for inspection and the final credit or refund. Google says standard trade-ins are typically inspected within five business days of receipt; a card refund can take up to 14 business days to appear.
Google says a trade-in offer generally expires 30 days after delivery of the new device. With instant trade-in, missing the shipping deadline can result in the credited amount being charged back. If the trade-in credit exceeds the new Pixel’s price, Google says the excess is generally issued as Google Store credit rather than cash. Google’s U.S. terms describe deadlines, inspection, refunds, and excess credit. Trade-in details cannot simply be swapped after an order is created; Google explains its device-information restrictions.

Before sending an iPad
- Back up the iPad, sign out of Apple ID and iCloud, disable Find My iPad, remove the device from your Apple account, and erase its content and settings. Apple’s Trade In page provides its device-preparation guidance.
- Check that the device powers on and shuts off, the charging port works, and the screen and body match the condition selected. Cracks, display defects, or a mismatch in model or storage can affect the value.
- Remove Activation Lock. Google warns that devices with it enabled may not qualify for the expected value.
- Do not ship an iPad with a swollen or damaged battery; Google says such devices cannot be returned for credit.
- Photograph the device and serial number, keep the tracking number, and retain the trade-in confirmation until the credit is finalized.
Was trading an iPad for the Pixel Tablet a good deal?
At the reported $399 credit, the offer was especially compelling for someone who already owned an eligible iPad with modest resale value, wanted to switch to Android, and did not need cellular connectivity. It was less compelling if the iPad could sell privately for more than $399, if the owner depended on iPadOS-specific apps or accessories, or if the buyer wanted the dock included at no extra cost. The Pixel Tablet is Wi-Fi-only, so it is not a cellular replacement for an iPad.
For a current purchase, compare the live Google Store trade-in estimate with the likely proceeds from a private sale and Apple’s own trade-in estimator. Apple Trade In is an option for people who prefer to stay in the Apple ecosystem, but its current value must be checked directly. Android alternatives include the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 series and OnePlus Pad 2; compare their current configurations and prices on their official pages rather than assuming the old Google promotion makes them more or less expensive.
Is the deal available now?
No. The 2024 promotion is expired. Google’s current Store configuration page lists the Pixel Tablet from $399 for the 128GB tablet without the dock and $499 for the tablet-and-dock bundle, but it does not establish that the old $399 iPad credit is active.
