The $479 M4 Mac mini deal was real, but it is not safe to treat that price as current: it was reported during past promotions, while Apple’s U.S. store currently lists the Mac mini from $799. If you find a new base model for $479 at checkout, it is a strong buy for a stationary user who already owns a monitor and peripherals. If you need a complete computer setup, add those costs before comparing it with a laptop or iMac.
Is the M4 Mac mini really $479 right now?
The $479 price applied to the base M4 Mac mini, typically the 16GB unified-memory, 256GB SSD model, during retailer promotions. TechRadar reported a Black Friday discount, and Tom’s Guide covered a separate Cyber Monday deal. Those reports establish that the price was offered; they do not establish that it is available today. Apple’s U.S. store currently lists the Mac mini from $799. TechRadar’s deal report, Tom’s Guide’s deal report, and Apple’s current lineup provide the relevant price context.
Apple announced the M4 Mac mini on October 29, 2024, with U.S. pricing starting at $599 and an education price of $499; availability began November 8, 2024. A $479 offer was therefore a retailer discount, not Apple’s standard price. Apple’s announcement records the launch pricing and dates.
Before buying a listing advertised at $479, verify the final checkout price and the exact item. Confirm it is new, sold by the retailer or a reputable authorized seller, and specifically the 16GB/256GB M4 configuration—not open-box stock, a marketplace listing, or a different model. Check whether a coupon, membership, pickup, or other condition applies, plus shipping, tax, return terms, and warranty coverage. Retailer prices and stock can change, so the historical deal is not a reason to assume a listing is still live.

What the base M4 Mac mini gives you
The base configuration pairs Apple’s M4 chip—10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine—with 16GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD. It has Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI, three rear Thunderbolt 4/USB4 ports, two front USB-C ports, a headphone jack, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.3. It can drive up to three displays, subject to the resolution and port arrangement. Consult Apple’s technical specifications for display and connection limits before choosing monitors.
The redesigned enclosure is roughly five inches square and about two inches tall; the M4 model weighs about 1.5 pounds. It is small enough to tuck beside a monitor, but it is a desktop, not a portable computer. Apple says the M4 Mac mini supports Apple Intelligence; availability depends on compatible software, region, and language requirements. Apple’s Mac mini page covers the product’s design and connections.
For ordinary work—web browsing, school, office applications, programming, communication, photo editing, and many video workflows—the configuration is compelling at a deep discount. The value is not just the chip: a buyer can get macOS without paying for an Apple display and input devices, provided they already have compatible peripherals. That is why the $479 price makes the most sense as a computer-only deal for an existing desk setup.
Budget for the whole setup, not just the computer
The Mac mini does not come with a monitor, keyboard, mouse or trackpad, or webcam. It has a basic built-in speaker, but it is not a substitute for dedicated speakers or headphones. Buyers starting from zero should compare the full setup cost rather than the computer’s sticker price alone.

| Setup | What it means | Budget implication |
|---|---|---|
| Mac mini only | For someone who already owns a display, keyboard, and mouse. | $479 before tax and any shipping, only if that historical deal is live for the exact model at checkout. |
| Basic new setup | Mac mini plus a general-purpose monitor, keyboard, and mouse. | At the historical $479 computer price, allow roughly $100–$300 for a monitor and $30–$150 for keyboard and mouse; these are planning estimates, not verified current prices. |
| Apple-accessory setup | Mac mini plus Apple input devices and a display purchased separately. | Apple announced the Magic Keyboard from $99, Magic Keyboard with Touch ID from $149, Magic Trackpad at $129, and Magic Mouse at $79. A display is additional, so this route can quickly erase the headline-price advantage. |
Apple’s accessory figures are the prices reported with the M4 Mac mini announcement, not a guarantee of current pricing. Apple’s announcement lists them. A USB-C or Thunderbolt dock may also be useful if you need more ports, card readers, or wired network connections. Check that a chosen monitor and cable support the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use.
Is 256GB of storage enough?
For a modest app collection, schoolwork, office tasks, browsing, and cloud-based files, 256GB can be workable. It becomes cramped sooner with large photo libraries, games, video projects, virtual machines, local AI models, or multiple professional applications. Because internal storage is not an ordinary user-upgrade, decide how much active space you need before buying.
A common cost-conscious approach is to buy the 256GB model and put archives, media, and less frequently used project files on an external SSD or network storage. Active video projects, caches, virtual machines, and applications can be more sensitive to storage speed and connection, so an external drive is not identical to having more fast internal storage. Include the drive in your actual budget rather than treating it as free expansion.
Is 16GB of unified memory enough?
For general productivity, development, communication, photo editing, light video editing, and moderate multitasking, 16GB is a sensible starting point. Memory is unified and cannot be upgraded after purchase. Consider a higher-memory configuration if your regular workload includes multiple virtual machines, large sample libraries or photo catalogs, high-resolution video editing, local language models, or many memory-intensive apps open at once.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should buy it—and who should pass?
Buy if
- You already own a monitor and input devices and want an inexpensive macOS desktop.
- You are a student, home-office user, developer, or iPhone owner who values macOS and Apple ecosystem features.
- Your everyday workload fits 16GB of memory and you can manage files within 256GB or use external storage.
- You are replacing an older Intel Mac or adding a compact stationary computer.
Pass or choose a different configuration if
- You need portability, a built-in screen, battery, keyboard, and trackpad.
- You have no peripherals and the full setup cost approaches that of a suitable laptop.
- You need user-upgradeable memory, lots of internal storage, or sustained high-end graphics performance.
- Your priority is Windows-only gaming or software; verify application compatibility before switching platforms.
- You regularly work with large active files or demanding professional workloads that exceed the base configuration’s practical limits.
How it compares with other Macs
| Option | Apple U.S. store price signal | Better fit when |
|---|---|---|
| M4 Mac mini | Apple lists the line from $799; $479 was a historical retailer deal, not a verified current price. | You want a stationary Mac and can reuse a display and peripherals. |
| MacBook Neo | From $699 on Apple’s current store page. | You need a complete, portable computer with display, keyboard, trackpad, and battery; it may be a more practical total purchase than a desktop plus peripherals. |
| iMac | From $1,499 on Apple’s current store page. | You want an all-in-one desktop with an integrated display and a simpler, tidier setup. |
| Mac Studio | From $2,499 on Apple’s current store page. | Your work justifies a much more capable desktop for sustained professional video, 3D, audio, or high-memory workloads. |
Prices above are Apple U.S. store starting prices in the latest checked listing, not guaranteed checkout prices for every configuration. The MacBook is the rational alternative if you travel or need an all-in-one computer; the iMac suits buyers who value an integrated display; the Mac Studio is for workloads that warrant its much higher cost. For more detail on current choices, see Apple’s Mac lineup.
Should you consider a refurbished Mac mini?
Apple Certified Refurbished can be a better use of the budget if the $479 new deal is gone and a refurbished configuration gives you more storage or memory for a comparable total. Apple says its certified refurbished products are functionally tested, may include genuine replacement parts, and carry a one-year limited warranty. One listed M4 refurbished configuration had 16GB memory and 512GB storage, but refurbished inventory changes and a specific unit may no longer be available. Apple’s refurbished listing is an example; check its live configuration, price, and terms before purchase.
Use this checkout decision rule
- Verify the deal: confirm the retailer, country, condition, exact M4 model, 16GB memory, 256GB storage, stock, and final checkout price.
- Add setup costs: include any monitor, keyboard, mouse or trackpad, webcam, hub, and external storage you actually need.
- Match the configuration to your workload: choose more memory or storage upfront if your regular work requires it; neither is a routine later upgrade.
- Compare the right alternative: choose a MacBook if you need portability, an iMac for an integrated desktop, a refurbished Mac mini for a stronger configuration at a similar cost, or a higher-end desktop only if the workload needs it.
- Check seller protections: review return terms and warranty coverage, especially for open-box or marketplace listings.
At a verified $479, the base M4 Mac mini is an excellent low-cost Mac desktop for someone with peripherals and mainstream needs. If the price is no longer available, do not chase the headline: compare the current new and certified-refurbished configurations against the cost of a complete setup and buy the option that fits your work.
