The most useful “non-toxic” kitchen upgrades are material choices, not a promise that any product is risk-free: choose clearly disclosed, uncoated cookware where practical; keep hot food out of plastic; and check food-contact and lead information for dishes. This guide names 15 product types to consider, not specific models—2026 prices, inventory and individual-product testing have not been established. Treat “non-toxic” as shopping shorthand, and verify each item’s materials, intended use and care instructions before buying.
Which cookware materials are worth considering?
Consumer Reports recommends uncoated stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel and glass among alternatives to cookware with undisclosed nonstick coatings. If you prefer a coated pan, look for a clear statement of its coating material and PFAS status rather than relying on a broad “nonstick” label.
1. Uncoated stainless-steel cookware set or skillet
Stainless steel is a durable, uncoated option for everyday cooking. Choose a product described as uncoated stainless steel, and check that any added nonstick surface or food-contact component is disclosed. The FDA notes that some PFAS are authorized for use in polymerized nonstick coatings; a generic “nonstick” description does not tell you what coating a pan uses.
2. Cast-iron skillet or Dutch oven
Cast iron offers an uncoated cooking surface. Seasoning can create a surface that resists sticking, though it is not the same as a factory-applied nonstick coating. Follow the maker’s care guidance to maintain the seasoning and keep the cookware in usable condition.

3. Carbon-steel frying pan
Carbon steel is another uncoated cookware choice identified by Consumer Reports. As with cast iron, check the maker’s instructions for seasoning and maintenance rather than assuming every pan is ready to use in the same way.
4. Ceramic-coated skillet with an explicit PFAS-free claim
Ceramic-coated pans can offer nonstick performance without the same PFAS-coating concern when the product clearly states that it is PFAS-free. Consumer Reports reports that several ceramic-coated pans performed well in its testing, but that does not establish a ranking for particular models here. Read the coating disclosure and follow the use and care limits.
5. Glass baking dish
Glass is an uncoated option for bakeware. Check the product’s intended oven use and temperature limits; “glass” alone is not a substitute for following the manufacturer’s directions.

What should replace plastic for food storage and prep?
6. Reusable glass food-storage container set
Consumer Reports recommends replacing plastic storage with glass or stainless steel and advises against heating food in plastic because heat increases the potential for leaching. Glass is a practical choice when you want to see stored food and avoid heating it in plastic. Verify whether the lids are also glass or whether they contain plastic, and follow separate heating instructions for lids.
7. Reusable silicone storage bags
Reusable silicone bags are identified by Consumer Reports as a freezer- and dishwasher-friendly alternative to single-use zip-top plastic bags. Check that the product is intended for food contact and confirm its own temperature, freezer and dishwasher limits; those details can vary by item.
8. Single-piece hard-maple cutting board
Look for a board made from a single piece of hard maple or an equivalent hard, close-grained wood. The FDA Food Code 2026 permits hard maple or equivalent wood for cutting boards and specified utensils. A single-piece board avoids relying on a glued-up construction; keep it clean and replace it if it becomes damaged or unsanitary.

Which kitchen tools avoid plastic food-contact surfaces?
9. Stainless-steel cooking utensil set
Stainless steel is one of Consumer Reports’ preferred alternatives to plastic spatulas, tongs and ladles. Check the full utensil, including handles and joints, for material disclosures and intended food-contact use. Choose shapes suited to your cookware so the utensil does not damage a coated pan.
10. Food-grade silicone spatula set
Consumer Reports lists food-grade or medical-grade silicone as a preferred material for spatulas, spoons and similar kitchen gadgets. Look for an explicit food-grade designation and the manufacturer’s heat limit. A silicone head attached to another material is not an all-silicone utensil, so check the handle and construction if material composition matters to you.

How can you choose dishes while reducing lead concerns?
11. Lead-free glass dinnerware
Consumer Reports recommends glass, stainless steel or ceramic instead of plastic dinnerware, while warning that some glassware can contain lead from manufacturing. Look for a credible lead-free claim from the maker rather than assuming every glass item is lead-free.
12. Lead-free ceramic dinnerware from a reputable manufacturer
Ceramic can be an option when the glaze and lead information are credible. FDA regulates lead in foodware and warns about risks from some imported products. Prefer a manufacturer that clearly identifies the product’s food-contact use and provides reliable lead information; avoid items with unclear glaze or origin details.

13. Parchment paper with an explicit PFAS-free claim
Consumer Reports recommends PFAS-free parchment as a baking-sheet liner and suggests reducing disposable foil use. Check the package for an explicit PFAS-free statement. No brand-specific test results are established here, so do not treat the category recommendation as verification of a particular product.

14. Glass or stainless-steel French press or Chemex-style coffee maker
Consumer Reports’ safer-kitchenware guidance recommends a coffee maker free of plastic and gives Chemex and French press designs as examples. Check the full product—including lid, handle and any filter holder—if avoiding plastic throughout the food-contact path is important to you.
How do you evaluate a “non-toxic” kitchen product before buying?
- Read the material and coating disclosure. “PFOA-free” does not establish that a pan is PFAS-free. For a coated pan, look for an explicit PFAS-free claim and a named coating material; otherwise, consider an uncoated option. Consumer Reports and FDA guidance distinguish a named claim from an unspecified “nonstick” label.
- Check food-contact use and lead details. Avoid cookware with unclear alloy or glaze information, especially when imported. FDA says certain imported aluminum, brass and related-alloy cookware can leach lead and should not be distributed in the United States.
- Follow heat limits and retire damaged nonstick pans. Do not heat food in plastic. Consumer Reports advises stopping use of nonstick pans that are scratched, flaking or otherwise damaged, and avoiding empty high-heat preheating.
- Use care instructions as part of the purchase decision. Confirm oven, dishwasher, freezer and temperature limits for the specific item. A material category does not establish identical limits across products.
- Keep hygiene in view. CDC recommends washing kitchen items with hot, soapy water, using separate cutting boards for raw meat and ready-to-eat foods, and using a food thermometer. Replace damaged or unsanitary equipment rather than relying on a reusable material indefinitely.
How to prioritize purchases on a budget
Since prices and model-level comparisons are not established here, prioritize by use rather than by a supposed universal ranking. Start with the items that address your own routine: a clearly disclosed uncoated pan if you want to avoid an uncertain coating; glass or stainless storage if you routinely heat leftovers; or separate, cleanable cutting boards and a thermometer if food handling is the immediate concern. Replace items as they wear out when possible, and compare the full product construction and care requirements before paying extra for a broad “non-toxic” label.
