The best cybersecurity certification depends on the work you want to do: Security+ is a starting point for security and IT operations; CISSP, CCSP and CISM suit experienced practitioners or leadership paths; CEH, CEH Practical, PenTest+ and OSCP focus on offensive security; and CCSK and CCAK center on cloud security knowledge or assurance. A credential can help demonstrate relevant knowledge, but the available evidence does not establish that any one certification guarantees a security job, promotion or pay increase.
How the 10 certifications map to career goals
| Career direction | Certifications | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Foundational security | CompTIA Security+ | People entering security or building on IT support and administration experience. |
| Experienced practice and leadership | ISC2 CISSP, ISC2 CCSP, ISACA CISM | Practitioners moving into broad security responsibility, cloud security or management. |
| Offensive security and penetration testing | EC-Council CEH, CEH Practical, CompTIA PenTest+, OffSec OSCP/OSCP+ | People pursuing ethical hacking or hands-on penetration-testing work. |
| Cloud assurance | Cloud Security Alliance CCSK, CCAK | People focused on cloud-security knowledge, governance, audit or compliance. |
These groupings describe emphasis, not a universal ranking. Before paying for an exam or training, compare its prerequisites, assessment style and renewal terms with the job requirements you are targeting.
Foundational security
1. CompTIA Security+
Security+ is the clearest starting point in this list for someone entering security from IT support, systems administration or a related technical role. TechTarget’s 2025 guide describes it as suitable for IT support technicians, administrators and people entering the field. The roles it lists include security administrator, systems administrator, network or cloud engineer, security engineer or analyst, and IT auditor.
TechTarget reports a 90-question, 90-minute exam and a passing score of 750 out of 900. That is a timed mixed-question assessment, rather than a long practical lab exam. Security+ can support an application by documenting baseline knowledge; it should not be treated as proof that you already have the hands-on experience an employer may require.

2. ISC2 CISSP
CISSP is a broad credential for experienced security practitioners and people moving toward management or executive responsibility. The cited TechTarget guide states that candidates need five years of cumulative paid work experience in at least two of CISSP’s eight domains. ISC2 positions it for experienced practitioners, managers and executives.
Its breadth makes it a different choice from a credential centered on one job function. If you are comparing CISSP with CISM, consider the work you want to own: CISSP is the broad, multi-domain option described here; CISM is oriented toward managing security programs, risk and response.
3. ISC2 CCSP
CCSP is for professionals specializing in cloud security. ISC2’s listed coverage spans cloud concepts and architecture, data security, platform and infrastructure security, application security, cloud operations, and legal, risk and compliance topics. The ISC2 page lists five years of required work experience and notes ANAB/ISO 17024 accreditation and DoD 8140.03 approval.
Choose this direction when cloud-security practice is central to the role you want, rather than treating “cloud” as a general add-on to a security credential. The available details establish the experience requirement and subject areas, but not a current exam fee or a full comparison of its renewal obligations with the other credentials here.
Rank #2
4. ISACA CISM
CISM is the management-track option in this group. Its subject areas are information-security governance, risk management, security-program management and incident management. It is a more natural fit for responsibility over security functions and programs than for a role focused primarily on exploiting systems.
ISACA lists computer-based delivery through PSI, continuous registration, an online review course, digital and print manuals, and a question database containing 1,047 practice questions. The page displayed exam fees of US$575 for members and US$760 for non-members in 2026; those are exam fees, not a total estimate for preparation, membership or other costs. ISACA also reports that 70% experienced on-the-job improvement and 42% received a pay boost. Those are provider-reported outcomes, not an independent comparison of CISM with other certifications or a promise of an individual result.
Offensive security and penetration testing
5. EC-Council CEH
CEH is EC-Council’s ethical-hacking credential. Its current page identifies version 13, recommends at least two years of IT-security experience and describes hands-on Cyber Range labs. Official training can establish exam eligibility without a separate application, according to EC-Council.
The experience figure is a recommendation, not stated as a mandatory minimum in the cited details. Check the provider’s current exam and training terms before enrolling, especially if you plan to rely on training to establish eligibility.

6. EC-Council CEH Practical
CEH Practical is the practical ethical-hacking option included in TechTarget’s 2025 list. The available listing does not establish its current exam format, eligibility rules, price or maintenance requirements. Confirm those terms directly with EC-Council before choosing it; do not assume that the CEH Practical exam or credential terms are interchangeable with CEH version 13.
7. CompTIA PenTest+
PenTest+ is another option to consider for penetration-testing work, particularly when weighing a vendor-neutral pentest credential against CEH or OSCP. TechTarget’s 2025 list includes it, but the cited details do not specify the current exam objectives, format, prerequisites, price or renewal terms. Check CompTIA’s current materials for those details before purchasing preparation or scheduling an exam.
8. OffSec OSCP and OSCP+
OSCP is the most clearly practical assessment described in this list. OffSec says its proctored exam lasts 24 hours and uses live lab systems, with grading that includes initial access, privilege escalation and an Active Directory set. OffSec describes the credential as demonstrating the ability to identify vulnerabilities ethically, exploit systems and escalate privileges.
OffSec lists no formal prerequisites, but recommends familiarity with TCP/IP, Windows and Linux administration, and basic Bash or Python. The OSCP+ designation expires three years after issuance; the OSCP designation itself remains valid indefinitely. That distinction matters when comparing a time-limited designation with the underlying credential.
Cloud security and assurance
9. Cloud Security Alliance CCSK
CCSK is a cloud-security knowledge certificate. Version 5 covers 12 domains. The Cloud Security Alliance says the online exam is open-book: it contains 60 randomly selected multiple-choice questions, allows 120 minutes and requires an 80% score to pass. The page states that two attempts may be used within two years of purchase.
Its open-book format differs from a timed practical assessment: it tests cloud-security knowledge under defined exam conditions rather than demonstrating performance on live systems. Consider it when a structured cloud-security knowledge credential matches your goal.
10. Cloud Security Alliance CCAK
CCAK is the cloud-auditing and assurance option in this list. It is most relevant when your work centers on cloud governance, audit and compliance rather than penetration testing. TechTarget’s 2025 list includes the credential, but the cited details do not establish its current syllabus, exam terms, prerequisites, price or maintenance policy. Verify those details with the Cloud Security Alliance before enrolling.

Experience requirements and recommendations differ enough to affect when a certification makes sense. The explicitly stated figures here are five years for CISSP, including experience in at least two of eight domains; five years required on the ISC2 CCSP page; at least two years of IT-security experience recommended for CEH; and no formal OSCP prerequisite, alongside OffSec’s recommended technical foundations. These figures are not equivalent: some are requirements, while the CEH and OSCP statements are recommendations.

Do not compare exam fees as if they were total certification costs. Of the ten credentials, the cited material gives a specific fee only for CISM: US$575 for ISACA members and US$760 for non-members on the page displayed in 2026. Training, study materials, practice questions, labs and retakes may be separate expenses, and the listed sources do not provide a consistent total-preparation-cost figure across all ten. Estimate your own budget using the provider’s current exam and preparation prices before committing.
Which cybersecurity certification should you get first?
Start with the role you want, then use the matching section above to compare entry requirements and exam style. A practical decision sequence is:
- Choose the job family. Decide whether you are aiming at foundational security operations, security leadership, penetration testing or cloud assurance.
- Check whether you meet the experience bar. Separate mandatory experience requirements from provider recommendations, and do not assume a credential substitutes for work history.
- Match the assessment to your strengths and the work. A timed question exam, open-book knowledge test and long practical lab measure different things.
- Calculate the full outlay. Include preparation materials, training or labs and possible retakes, not only the exam fee.
- Confirm current terms with the issuer. Exam objectives, eligibility, prices and maintenance rules can change; verify them before buying.
No certification in this list can be called universally “enough” to get a security job on the evidence available. Use one to show relevant knowledge for a specific role, and assess it alongside your experience and the requirements in actual job postings. Likewise, do not choose a credential based on a promised pay increase: the cited outcome figures are for CISM only and are provider-reported, not a cross-certification return-on-investment study.
