Asetek’s 2017 Data-Center Cooling Push: What Happened and Who Its Partners Were

Asetek sought to expand into data-center cooling through OEMs in 2017. Its launch partner was not disclosed, while NEC and Fujitsu appeared in separate project announcements.

Asetek’s 2017 data-center expansion was an effort to grow beyond desktop cooling through OEM partnerships, not a confirmed announcement of a current strategy. The partner behind the product launch discussed in the October 16, 2017 report was not named. Asetek later named NEC and Fujitsu in separate announcements about Japanese HPC projects; neither was identified as that undisclosed partner.

What Asetek was trying to do in 2017

Asetek, known for liquid-cooling technology, was seeking a larger role in data-center infrastructure by working through original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The October 16, 2017 Bloomberg report republished by Data Center Knowledge described a new data-center product being developed with an unnamed partner. The article said 91% of Asetek’s revenue then came from its desktop business—a historical figure for that period, not a current revenue mix.

CEO André Eriksen said in the 2017 report, “The data center is where the biggest potential is long-term,” and, “In the longer perspective, I believe that data centers will be liquid cooled.” These were the company’s ambitions at the time, not evidence that liquid cooling had become universal or that the forecast has since been realized.

Who was the undisclosed partner?

The partner was not identified in the October 2017 report. Asetek’s November update said the customer had moved the planned launch from the SC17 trade show in November 2017 to March 2018 for reasons outside Asetek’s control. The company’s Q4 2017 report repeated the revised target and said it expected to provide more information in Q1 2018. The sources cited here do not establish whether that product launched, who the partner was, or what became of the project.

In the November update, CEO and founder André Sloth Eriksen said, “Unfortunately, postponements are not uncommon in our industry,” referring to the unnamed customer’s changed launch target.

NEC and Fujitsu were separate named projects

Asetek also announced two Japanese HPC-related engagements in 2017. They illustrate its OEM-led expansion, but the announcements do not connect either company to the unnamed product partner.

Company and announcement What Asetek said
NEC Corporation, October 31, 2017 Asetek announced NEC as a new data-center OEM partner. NEC Fielding was to deploy Asetek RackCDU direct-to-chip cooling at a new HPC installation in Japan; Asetek said shipments had begun. Asetek announcement
Fujitsu, November 16, 2017 Asetek announced a USD 975,000 order to cool the AI Bridging Cloud Infrastructure (ABCI) cluster at Japan’s AIST, with delivery expected in Q4 2017. The value and delivery timing are Asetek’s announced figures. Asetek announcement

How the OEM strategy fit the business

Asetek’s Q4 2017 report described its data-center plan as increasing adoption among end users through existing OEM customers while adding new OEMs. That approach put equipment makers and infrastructure partners between Asetek and many end users. The company also cautioned that revenue and operating results could fluctuate as those partnerships developed.

The 2017 Bloomberg report included contemporary market and stock figures, as well as analyst views. Those figures describe that historical moment rather than current company performance. One analyst quoted, Johan Murer of Danske Bank, said, “The stock could fall back if the partner isn’t Intel.” That was a dated analyst opinion, not confirmation that Intel was the partner or a present-day investment assessment.

What can be said about Asetek now

The available company announcements and reporting establish a 2017–2018 expansion effort and its planned timing, but they do not establish Asetek’s 2026 strategy, current partner roster, current product availability, or the final status of the unnamed-partner launch. Treat the headline as a historical account of an OEM growth push, not a current company update.
