AI is changing what IT work involves more than it is eliminating the need for IT workers. Employers increasingly want people who can combine a solid technical foundation with AI and data literacy, security awareness, sound judgment and communication. For most workers, staying employable is less about becoming an AI researcher and more about using AI safely and effectively in a specific technical role.

What skills are employers looking for as AI spreads?

The demand signal is for hybrid capability: technical depth in a core IT discipline, paired with the ability to work with AI-enabled tools and make good decisions about their outputs. That core might be software engineering, infrastructure, networking, cybersecurity, data engineering or IT service management.

The OECD’s 2026 findings suggest advanced AI expertise is a specialist requirement, not a baseline expectation for the whole workforce: fewer than 1% of workers need advanced AI skills. More broadly, workers need to use AI-enabled systems, interpret data and recognize when an output needs checking. That distinction matters: learning to apply AI in an existing role can be more relevant for many IT professionals than trying to retrain as a machine-learning researcher.

  • Technical fundamentals: Build depth in a discipline that employers need, such as securing systems, developing software, maintaining infrastructure or managing data.
  • Applied AI and data literacy: Know how to use relevant tools, assess their outputs, identify data-quality problems and understand where automation fits into a workflow.
  • Security and risk awareness: Consider privacy, access, reliability and security when adopting AI tools or integrating them into systems.
  • Analytical and business judgment: Frame the problem before choosing a tool, interpret results in context and weigh trade-offs.
  • Communication and collaboration: Gather requirements, explain technical decisions to non-specialists and coordinate work across teams.

These capabilities form a T-shaped profile: useful breadth across AI, data and collaboration, supported by dependable depth in one technical area. The right balance varies by role, employer and industry; there is no single AI skill set that guarantees a job.

Will AI replace IT jobs or change the work inside them?

AI can automate or compress routine, codifiable tasks. But an occupation consists of multiple tasks, and automating part of a workflow does not by itself mean the entire role disappears. As routine work becomes faster or less labor-intensive, the job can shift toward reviewing outputs, integrating systems, solving less-defined problems and working with stakeholders.

In software work, for example, producing a first draft of code may take less effort when AI assistance is available. The worker still needs to understand the requirement, judge whether the result is correct and secure, fit it into the wider system, and take responsibility for the delivered work. The same pattern can apply to data analysis, IT support and infrastructure operations: assistance with a task does not remove the need to verify results or handle exceptions.

The OECD’s labour-market research examines changing demand even in jobs that do not require specialized AI skills. This points to a shift in the skill mix within ordinary roles, not only the creation of a small category of AI-specialist jobs. How much a particular job changes depends on its tasks and how its employer redesigns the work.

What do the job forecasts say—and what don’t they say?

The World Economic Forum’s 2025 Future of Jobs Report projects substantial job movement by 2030, but its figures cover the wider workforce, not IT alone. They represent employer expectations, not observed outcomes or a guarantee of future hiring. The report’s press release says disruption will affect 22% of jobs by 2030, with 170 million roles created and 92 million displaced, for a projected net increase of 78 million.

WEF 2025 projection or finding What it indicates How to interpret it
170 million roles created and 92 million displaced by 2030; net increase of 78 million Large-scale movement between growing and declining work Employer expectations across jobs overall, not an IT-sector headcount forecast or a guarantee.
22% of jobs disrupted by 2030 Significant change in the work employers expect to need A projection of disruption, not a claim that 22% of workers will be unemployed.
Nearly 40% of job skills expected to change; 63% of employers cite skills gaps as a key barrier Employers anticipate a substantial reskilling challenge Survey findings about expected change and reported barriers, not a measured outcome for every occupation.
70% plan to hire people with emerging skills; 51% plan to move staff from declining to growing roles; 41% expect workforce reductions caused by skills obsolescence Hiring, internal transitions and reductions may happen at the same time Employer plans can vary by organization and do not predict an individual’s outcome.

For an IT worker, the practical implication is neither “AI makes technical careers safe” nor “AI makes them obsolete.” It is that specific tasks and skill requirements can change quickly, while employers may respond through a mix of recruitment, training, redeployment and reductions.

How widespread is AI use, and are employers hiring AI specialists?

AI adoption is broadening, while advanced expertise remains comparatively rare. OECD 2026 figures report that AI use among firms in OECD countries rose from about 7% in 2021 to 20% in 2025, and that around one-quarter of workers were exposed to generative AI during 2022–2024. These are OECD aggregates; they do not describe every country, employer or IT occupation.

That breadth of exposure does not mean every company is hiring dedicated AI specialists. Many organizations need existing teams to use AI tools, manage data, secure deployments or adapt processes. Specialist roles are one part of the market; applied AI capability inside established IT jobs is another.

Microsoft and LinkedIn’s 2024 analysis associated job postings that mentioned AI with a 17% increase in application growth. The analysis drew on a 31-country survey of 31,000 people and LinkedIn hiring data alongside Microsoft productivity signals. The association does not prove that adding an AI keyword causes more applications, and it should not be treated as evidence that all AI-labeled roles are growing at the same rate.

  1. Map your tasks. List recurring work and separate routine, well-defined tasks from work requiring judgment, coordination, security review or accountability. Identify where AI could assist and where mistakes would be costly.
  2. Learn the AI tools already used in your environment. Understand their approved uses, data-handling rules and limitations. Practice checking outputs rather than treating them as authoritative.
  3. Strengthen your fundamentals. Prioritize data interpretation and quality, security, and the core technical skills of your discipline. AI fluency is more useful when you can recognize an incorrect or unsafe result.
  4. Build a small applied project. Demonstrate how you used a tool to improve a real workflow, what you verified, what risks you managed and what changed. Use only data and tools you are permitted to use.
  5. Practise explaining trade-offs. Describe why a solution fits the need, where it may fail and when a human review is necessary. These explanations help show judgment as well as tool familiarity.
  6. Choose training to close a specific gap. A short targeted course, coached project or longer program may each make sense depending on the skill and support available. A certificate can signal learning, but applied evidence is a stronger way to show what you can do.

When comparing training options, weigh depth, practical application, transferability beyond one vendor, fit with your employer’s data and security environment, and the time and support required. A broad introduction is suitable for learning common concepts; a deeper program is more appropriate when the target role specifically calls for skills such as machine learning, data engineering or security expertise.

What are employers changing about hiring and workforce planning?

The WEF employer findings describe three strategies operating at once: recruiting for emerging skills, moving current employees into growing roles and reducing positions where skills become obsolete. That combination means a hiring slowdown in one task area can coexist with demand for other capabilities, but the report does not establish a specific hiring trend for junior developers.

Employers can make the transition more deliberate by mapping tasks within roles, identifying which AI can augment or automate, and then funding training and redesigning workflows. Skills-first hiring can also broaden the candidate pool when organizations assess demonstrated capabilities and work samples alongside experience. For workers, that makes a focused portfolio or project showing applied judgment useful evidence, rather than relying only on a list of tools or credentials.

What this means for your career and financial resilience

For personal career planning, treat AI as a reason to keep skills current, not as a dependable forecast of salary gains, job losses or a particular hiring boom. The available figures describe broad employer expectations and OECD-wide patterns; they cannot determine what will happen to one role, employer or local labor market.

A resilient plan is to maintain depth in a marketable IT discipline, add the AI and data fluency relevant to that work, and retain evidence of results you can explain. Review job descriptions in your target area periodically, look for recurring skill requirements, and choose learning investments against those requirements rather than assuming that a fashionable credential will pay off.
