What did the jury find?
On March 25, 2026, a Los Angeles County Superior Court jury answered case-specific questions about negligence and warnings concerning Meta’s and YouTube’s platforms. The verdict forms record findings against both companies on negligence-related issues involving platform design or operation, as well as failure to warn. They are the most direct record of what the jury decided: Meta verdict form and YouTube verdict form.
The case centered on allegations that design choices on Instagram and YouTube contributed to the plaintiff’s injuries. News coverage described features such as infinite scroll and autoplay as part of the plaintiffs’ design argument. The jury’s findings apply to this case; they do not establish that social media causes the same harm for every user or resolve every claim against social-media companies.
How was the $6 million award assembled?
The jury awarded $3 million in compensatory damages and then an additional $3 million in punitive damages, for a total of $6 million, according to the Associated Press verdict report.

The Guardian and Al Jazeera reported that the award was allocated 70% to Meta and 30% to Google, YouTube’s parent company. That reported division describes responsibility for this award; it is not a general finding about either company’s conduct in other cases. Who brought the case, and what did she say?
The plaintiff was identified in court by the initials K.G.M. and was reported to be 20 at the time of trial. She testified about using the platforms as a child and described mental-health effects. Those details are her testimony and the basis of her allegations; they should not be mistaken for a universal conclusion about young people’s social-media use. What happens after the verdict?
In July 2026, the Associated Press reported that both Meta and YouTube had appealed. An appeal challenges the trial-court result; filing one does not itself reverse the verdict. Until an appellate court rules, the jury’s findings remain the trial-court verdict, subject to the appeal process. The case is one outcome in litigation over alleged harms from social-media platform design, not a blanket ruling that settles all such disputes.
