ASUS is a Taiwanese company, not a mainland Chinese company. It began in Taipei, is headquartered there, and its parent company, ASUSTeK Computer Inc., is listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange. ASUS also does business in mainland China, and the manufacturing location of a particular product depends on its model and production run.

Where ASUS was founded—and why two dates appear
ASUS’s official history traces its beginnings to engineers working in Taipei in 1989, initially focused on computer motherboards. The company’s investor profile gives April 2, 1990, as its formal establishment date. These dates describe different milestones: the origin of the venture and its formal establishment, rather than a contradiction. ASUS says it began trading publicly on the Taiwan Stock Exchange in 1996; its profile specifies November 14, 1996. ASUS history and ASUS’s company profile provide the company’s account and corporate details.
ASUS describes its start as the work of a group of engineers in Taipei; its press material refers to four hardware engineers. That origin story does not establish that any one founder currently controls the company. ASUS’s pressroom account discusses the founding engineers.
Headquarters, legal identity and stock listing
The listed parent company is ASUSTeK Computer Inc. ASUS identifies its headquarters as the LiDe Building and LiGong Building in Beitou District, Taipei City, Taiwan. It lists ASUSTeK on the Taiwan Stock Exchange under ticker 2357. The company profile describes its business as designing, researching and developing, and selling computers and related technology products. ASUS’s investor profile is the source for these details.

The company’s Chinese-language legal name does not make it a mainland Chinese company. Chinese is used in Taiwan, and the presence of Chinese characters in a corporate name does not establish where a company is incorporated, headquartered, or controlled.
Who owns ASUS?
ASUSTeK is publicly traded, so its shares are held by shareholders rather than by a single private owner. ASUS’s 2024 annual report lists a diversified shareholder base. In that report, dated shareholding information shows Chairman Jonney Shih holding approximately 4.05% as of March 30, 2025; the largest shareholder named in the cited excerpt was an investment fund at approximately 4.34%. These are dated figures, not a current ownership snapshot. ASUS’s 2024 annual report contains the shareholder information.

The company materials cited here do not identify ASUS as owned by a mainland Chinese parent company or the Chinese government. That is a narrower, supportable conclusion than claiming no investor from China owns any shares: a public company can have shareholders from many places without changing its corporate identity. For investor information, ASUS also provides a shareholder information page.
Why ASUS may be mistaken for a Chinese company
- Manufacturing: Some ASUS products or components may be made in mainland China. Factory location does not determine the nationality of the brand owner.
- Chinese-language name: ASUSTeK’s Chinese name is consistent with a Taiwan-based company and does not establish mainland ownership.
- Business in China: ASUS has documented business activity there. Its history lists China among locations where it established customer-service centers in 2000, and its financial filings separately discuss mainland-China investments.
- Different uses of “Chinese”: The term can refer to mainland China, Chinese language or culture, or a political view of Taiwan. Those meanings are not interchangeable. For corporate identity, ASUS’s own profile identifies its headquarters and listing in Taiwan.
ASUS’s history timeline documents its customer-service presence, while its 2025 Q4 consolidated financial report and 2025 Q4 separate financial report show a multinational corporate structure and mainland-China interests. Those facts establish international operations, not a mainland Chinese parent company.

Where ASUS products are made
ASUS’s nationality does not tell you where an individual laptop, motherboard, graphics card, or other device was manufactured. Manufacturing can vary by product category, model, production batch, contract manufacturer, and market. The company’s filings show operations and subsidiaries across multiple countries, but do not support a universal claim that all ASUS products are made in China—or that none are.
If country of manufacture matters to your purchase, inspect the specific unit rather than relying on the brand name. Look for the “Made in” or country-of-origin label on the device or packaging, or check the model’s regulatory documentation. Similar models sold in different regions may not have identical production origins.

What the answer means for buyers
If you are checking company ownership
Use the legal parent, headquarters, stock listing, and ownership disclosures as your criteria. ASUSTeK is headquartered in Taipei and listed in Taiwan; the cited official materials do not show a mainland Chinese parent or state owner.
If you are checking manufacturing origin
Verify the origin label for the exact unit and regional version. “Taiwanese company” describes ASUS’s corporate identity; it does not mean every product is manufactured in Taiwan.

If you are checking data or cybersecurity exposure
Nationality alone cannot establish where a product’s cloud data is stored, which jurisdiction governs a service, what telemetry a device collects, or which subsidiary supplies local support. Those questions require the specific product’s privacy policy, firmware documentation, cloud-service terms, and regional support information.
Is ASUS Taiwanese, Chinese or multinational?
For ordinary corporate and consumer purposes, the precise description is a Taiwan-founded, Taiwan-headquartered multinational company. ASUS began in Taipei, its legal parent is ASUSTeK Computer Inc., and that company is listed in Taiwan. It also has business activity and corporate interests in mainland China, alongside a broader international footprint. Calling ASUS a mainland Chinese company because of its sales or manufacturing connections would conflate operations with ownership and corporate origin.
Political descriptions of Taiwan vary among governments and institutions. That contested terminology does not change the corporate facts ASUS states about its Taipei headquarters and Taiwan stock listing.
