Start by checking the item’s marks, then inspect worn areas and use a magnet only as a preliminary screen. None of these home checks proves that an item is solid silver: marks can be copied, and many non-silver metals are not magnetic. For a valuable, antique, or disputed piece, seek a professional assessment.
Check the marks—and understand what they mean
Look for a stamp inside a ring, on a chain clasp or end tag, on the back of a pendant, or underneath a larger object. A jeweler’s loupe or phone-camera zoom can help with small marks.
- 925, .925, or S925: These marks claim 925 parts per thousand silver, or 92.5%. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission explains that “silver,” “sterling,” and “sterling silver” describe products containing 92.5% pure silver. FTC Jewelry Guides.
- Sterling or Ster.: These are common sterling claims; they do not independently verify the metal.
- Coin silver: Under FTC guidance, this means 90% silver.
- Silver plate: Silver has been applied as a layer over another metal; it is not solid sterling silver.
- German silver or nickel silver: Despite the names, these materials can contain little or no pure silver.
In the UK, a hallmark can include a sponsor or maker mark and a fineness mark. In the U.S., FTC guidance says an article bearing a quality mark should also identify the responsible company or person by name or U.S. registered trademark. A stamp is a claim to corroborate, not proof: marks can be copied.
Inspect worn areas for plating
Examine clasps, corners, raised decoration, and scratches. If the surface has worn through, a yellow, reddish, gray, or otherwise different metal beneath it can indicate a base metal under silver plate. Wear may be subtle, and its absence does not establish that the item is solid silver.

Use a magnet only as a screening test
Silver is not strongly attracted to a magnet. Strong attraction is a warning that a ferromagnetic metal is present, but it does not identify the item’s full composition. A lack of attraction is not confirmation of silver: copper, brass, aluminum, and many counterfeit alloys are also non-magnetic. Small steel parts in a clasp can also affect the result.
Know the risks of stronger home tests
Acid and scratch tests can help distinguish metals, but they can damage a finish or leave a mark. They should be used only on an inconspicuous area by someone who understands the procedure. Avoid testing a valuable, antique, or collectible item yourself; the potential damage may outweigh the information gained.

When to get a professional assessment
For an item with significant financial or personal value, or when authenticity is disputed, consult a reputable jeweler, assay office, or XRF service. Professional methods provide stronger evidence than visual inspection or a magnet, though the appropriate method depends on the item and the question being asked.
