For U.S. consumers, the best place to get free credit reports is AnnualCreditReport.com, the only federally authorized website for free reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. You can request all three together or space them out to check your credit history throughout the year. The site currently offers free weekly online reports; the legal baseline is one free report from each bureau every 12 months.

Where to get your free credit reports

Start at AnnualCreditReport.com. The Federal Trade Commission calls it “the only authorized website for free credit reports,” and USA.gov identifies it as the federally authorized source for free annual reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

You can request reports online, by phone at 877-322-8228, or by mailing the Annual Credit Report Request form. The FTC explains the request options and how to order reports at Free credit reports; USA.gov also provides access guidance at Get your credit report.

How often you can get a report

The legal baseline is one free report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus every 12 months. FTC consumer guidance says free weekly online reports are available through AnnualCreditReport.com. The weekly option is useful if you want to check for changes more often; reports can also be ordered together or staggered across the year.

#1 Best Overall
Padike RFID Credit Card Holder Business Card Organizer , with 96 Card Slots Credit Card Protector for Managing Your Different Cards to Prevent Loss or Damage (Black)
  • 【Durable Materials】: Our credit card organizer is made of water-resistant and wear-resistant PU, reinforced with sealed edges and durable PVC credit card sleeves. It is scratch-resistant and water-repellent, resistant to dust and sweat, and easy to clean. The edges of the credit card holder are reinforced to provide the advantages of wrinkle resistance and crack resistance.
  • 【RFID Blocking】The credit card holder has an anti-shield lining, which can effectively block the electronic scanning instrument from illegally scanning the credit card in the card holder to protect the security of your RFID chip card.
  • 【Easy to Find & Read】The internal translucent anti-magnetic PVC card page makes it easy for you to find and read card information and quickly find the card you need.
  • 【Large capacity / Multipurpose】A total of 32 card slots, each card can hold 3 cards. A total of 96 card slots, fully meet your needs for card storage. You can hold your important customer business cards, credit cards, debit cards, ID cards, membership cards, VIP cards, invoices, receipts, etc. to prevent loss and damage.
  • This is the best choice to keep your credit card and business card organized and easy to manage. Can be used to store credit cards or business cards that are important but not commonly used.

There is also a temporary Equifax-specific allowance: the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says consumers may obtain up to six additional free Equifax reports during a 12-month period through December 2026. This is separate from the free reports available from the other bureaus. See the CFPB’s instructions for getting free credit reports.

Should you request all three reports at once?

Request all three together when you are preparing for a major credit application and want to compare the records lenders may see. If your goal is ongoing oversight, stagger them so you can review your credit history at intervals. Bureau files can differ, so checking one report does not necessarily tell you what appears on the other two.

  • Your name, address and other personal information
  • Accounts, account status and payment history
  • Balances and other account details
  • Credit inquiries
  • Accounts or activity you do not recognize

If you find an error, dispute it with the credit bureau and the business that supplied the information, following their instructions. If you find an account that is not yours, the FTC recommends using IdentityTheft.gov to get a personalized identity-theft recovery plan.

Credit report versus credit score

A credit report is a record of credit-history information. A credit score is a separate calculation based on information in a report, and getting a free report does not automatically provide a free FICO score. The CFPB notes that consumers can buy a FICO score through myFICO, but you do not have to buy credit protection, identity-theft monitoring or another add-on service to obtain a score. Its guidance is at How can I get a free copy of my credit reports?

When paid monitoring may be useful

Paid monitoring is optional. It may suit someone who wants alerts between report checks, but compare the service’s price, bureau coverage, alert speed, cancellation terms and the score model it provides. Do not assume that a monitoring alert is a complete credit report or that a score product includes reports from all three bureaus.

How to avoid “free report” scams

Use the exact AnnualCreditReport.com address rather than a look-alike site. Be wary of unsolicited emails and offers that call a report free but require a purchase or recurring enrollment. The FTC explains how to recognize misleading offers and protect yourself in its credit report guidance.
