Check that your message used the contact method shown on the listing, look for a reply in spam or junk, and—if the listing is still available—send one brief follow-up. If there is still no answer, move on. If the seller does respond, keep the transaction local and in person, and don’t pay before meeting or share financial information.
What does it mean when a Craigslist seller doesn’t respond?
Silence establishes only that you have not received a reply. Craigslist’s email-relay documentation explains how messages can be routed, but it does not show whether a particular seller received, read, or ignored your message. Craigslist also does not identify nonresponse by itself as a scam signal.

There are several possible explanations: the seller may have missed the message, the item may no longer be available, they may have received other inquiries, or they may have decided not to proceed. Those are possibilities, not facts you can infer from silence. It is not evidence that the seller blocked you, that Craigslist’s relay failed, or that the listing is fraudulent.
Check whether a reply could be getting lost
- Look in spam and junk. Craigslist recommends checking those folders when expected email is missing. Search for the listing subject or a Craigslist relay address, too. Craigslist’s contact guidance also advises contacting your email administrator if needed.
- Verify the contact route. Confirm that your original message went through the contact method shown on the listing. Not every posting handles email the same way: Craigslist says free postings must use its mail relay, while some paid postings can show an address directly or opt out of email replies. Craigslist’s email-relay information explains these options.
- Send one concise follow-up if the listing is still available. Use the advertised contact channel and make it easy to answer. For example: “Hi, I’m following up about the [item]. Is it still available? I can meet locally at [reasonable time].” This is a practical suggestion, not a Craigslist rule or a guarantee of a reply.
- Stop if there is no answer. Craigslist does not publish a standard response time, so there is no official wait period to rely on. After a reasonable wait, look for another listing rather than sending repeated messages.
Understand what Craigslist’s email relay can—and can’t—tell you
Craigslist says its mail relay creates a randomized custom email address for each posting. Existing reply threads can continue for up to four months, and deleting a posting does not, by itself, prevent an existing conversation from continuing. Those are capabilities of the relay, not a promise that a seller will reply or proof that your message reached them. Read Craigslist’s explanation of the relay.

The relay also does not hide everything you type: Craigslist says contact details included in a message body pass through unaltered, and the email program’s “real name” field is visible to the recipient. Avoid putting sensitive personal or financial details in a message. Craigslist cautions that requests for your personal email address may be a scam; some paid postings may nevertheless display an email address directly or decline email replies.

A missing reply is not the same thing as a suspicious request. Evaluate what the seller asks you to do if they get in touch. Craigslist’s avoiding-scams guidance recommends dealing locally and face-to-face, meeting in a safe, public place, and not paying before meeting. It also advises against wiring money, paying with gift cards, or sharing financial or sensitive personal information.
- Do not share a verification code. Craigslist says requests for a “code” or “verification” are always a scam. See Craigslist’s warning.
- Do not send payment before meeting. Be wary of requests to pay in advance, including through wire transfers or gift cards.
- Do not share sensitive information. Do not give out bank details, account logins, or other financial information.
- Be cautious of shipping or mover offers. Craigslist flags these as potential scam patterns; prefer a local, in-person exchange.
- Use Craigslist’s relay to discuss the specific item. Its guidance describes this and meeting in a safe, public place as features of a good interaction.
If a message appears fraudulent or harassing, Craigslist’s contact page directs users to help for scams and suspicious messages.
