No announced deal suggests Zillow is buying Redfin. Rocket Companies owns Redfin: Rocket completed its acquisition on July 1, 2025. Zillow and Redfin’s closer connection is a multifamily rental-listings and advertising agreement, not an ownership transaction. Zillow could pursue a purchase only through a deal involving Rocket, but the companies’ official announcements and filings do not establish that Zillow has made an offer or that Rocket plans to sell Redfin.
Who owns Redfin now?
Rocket Companies acquired Redfin in an all-stock transaction that Rocket announced on March 10, 2025, at $12.50 per Redfin share and an announced $1.75 billion equity value. Rocket confirmed the acquisition’s completion on July 1, 2025. The $1.75 billion figure is the announced equity value at the time, not Redfin’s current valuation or an estimate of what Zillow would have to pay. Rocket’s completion announcement confirms the current ownership fact.
That means Zillow could not buy Redfin from its former public shareholders as though Redfin were still an independent company. A future purchase would require a transaction involving Rocket. The official materials cited here do not announce a Zillow offer or say Rocket intends to sell. They also do not establish whether the companies have discussed a transaction privately, so that question remains unknown.
What is the Zillow–Redfin rentals partnership?
The agreement is about rental listings and advertising, not a merger. Zillow and Redfin entered it on February 6, 2025. Under the original arrangement, Zillow became the exclusive provider of multifamily rental listings on Redfin’s sites, including Rent.com and ApartmentGuide.com, for properties with 25 or more units. Redfin helped Zillow reach property-management advertisers. Zillow’s filing and the FTC’s account describe an upfront payment of $100 million and lead payments under the agreement’s terms. Zillow’s August 2026 SEC filing and the FTC’s settlement announcement describe the arrangement.

Zillow said the partnership helped increase multifamily property listings on Redfin’s sites to nearly four times their prior level and grow multifamily properties on Zillow’s sites by almost 40%. Those are figures reported by Zillow, not independently audited measures. The agreement’s scale and the companies’ shared commercial relationship explain why they may appear closer, but neither makes Redfin a Zillow subsidiary.
Why did regulators challenge the arrangement?
In September 2025, the Federal Trade Commission and five states filed antitrust complaints challenging the rental-listings arrangement. The FTC’s concern was that the agreement paid a competitor to exit multifamily rental advertising and limited Redfin’s ability to compete independently. FTC Bureau of Competition Director Daniel Guarnera characterized the issue this way: “This kind of payment to a competitor to exit a market and stop competing violates the antitrust laws.” That is the regulator’s position, not a finding that Zillow and Redfin combined ownership.

What does the 2026 settlement change?
Zillow disclosed on August 22, 2026, that it had entered a stipulated order with the FTC and five states; it announced the resolution on August 24. The settlement preserves the listing-syndication relationship while removing restrictions on Redfin selling its own rental advertising and displaying its own customers’ listings. It also prohibits sharing specified nonpublic, competitively sensitive business information. Zillow’s filing said the order was subject to entry by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia when disclosed.
Redfin is required to compete again
Under the FTC’s description, Redfin must relaunch its rental internet listing service within six months after the order is finalized. The FTC says Redfin must have the technology, management, sales and customer-support capabilities to operate it, and commit funding to sustain its return. The settlement does not require Redfin to stop carrying Zillow-syndicated listings.

The court-entry distinction matters
The FTC described the settlement as a proposed order and says stipulated final orders have force of law when a district judge approves and signs them. Zillow likewise said court entry was pending when it filed its disclosure. The announcement and filing therefore establish that the parties reached a settlement, but do not by themselves establish that the order has since been approved or taken effect. The FTC says the proposed order would remain in place for 10 years.
How long will the partnership continue?
Zillow’s August 2026 SEC filing says multifamily listing syndication from Zillow to Redfin is to remain intact through at least June 30, 2030. Zillow also said the companies plan to offer standalone multifamily advertising products in 2027, alongside syndication. That is a forward-looking plan, not confirmation that the products have launched. In a statement about the resolution, Zillow Rentals general manager and senior vice president Michael Sherman called it “a win for renters and multifamily housing providers”; that is Zillow’s characterization of the settlement.

- Established: Rocket owns Redfin, and the Zillow–Redfin arrangement concerns multifamily rental listings and advertising.
- Established: The settlement is designed to preserve syndication while allowing Redfin to re-enter rental advertising, subject to the order’s requirements and court entry.
- Not established: A Zillow offer for Redfin, Rocket’s willingness to sell, or private acquisition discussions.
For now, the rental partnership is a commercial relationship between businesses under Rocket’s ownership of Redfin—not evidence that Zillow is buying its rival.
