Polygon 2.0’s token upgrade does not establish that Polygon’s token will reach a new price high. MATIC was upgraded and renamed POL, which became the native gas token on Polygon PoS in September 2024. The negative outlook in the headline comes from a July 4, 2024 article, so it is historical—not a current forecast. Polygon’s later migration update explains the transition, but does not predict POL’s price.
What changed from MATIC to POL?
Polygon describes POL as an upgrade and renaming of MATIC. Polygon Improvement Proposal 46, marked Final and dated August 21, 2024, specifies the MATIC-to-POL migration changes for Polygon PoS. Polygon’s tokenomics overview puts it plainly: “Practically speaking, POL is an upgrade and renaming of the MATIC token.” Polygon’s Polygon 2.0: Tokenomics overview explains the token design.
On Polygon PoS, POL has served as the native gas token since September 2024. Polygon’s September 3, 2025 update reported that 99% of MATIC on Polygon had migrated to POL by that date, at a 1:1 upgrade ratio. That figure is Polygon’s reported progress in 2025; it is not a live measure of completion in 2026. The same update says an allocation of 2% of emissions over a decade is subject to ongoing community consensus, not an unconditional fixed outcome. Polygon’s migration update provides those details.
Does the 2024 negative outlook show what POL will do now?
No. TechBullion published the article behind the headline on July 4, 2024, under Ahmed Raza’s byline. It argued that Polygon 2.0 had not lifted MATIC’s price and included price and technical-analysis claims. Although its headline refers to an analyst, the retrieved article does not name that analyst. Its bearish framing describes a view at that time; it cannot establish whether POL will make a new high now. The July 2024 TechBullion article is the source for that historical outlook.

The article also cited a claim that 92% of active addresses were losing money, but the underlying data publisher is not established in the retrieved text. That number should not be treated as a verified statistic or used to infer current investor losses.
Can Polygon’s token design support a new-high price case?
Token utility and network design can be part of an investment thesis, but neither guarantees demand at a particular level or a future price. The migration establishes a token transition and POL’s gas-token role on Polygon PoS; it does not show that the token will reach a new high. Polygon’s tokenomics material describes the design, not a price target or forecast.

A current price assessment would need current, attributable market evidence, including POL’s price, circulating supply, market capitalization, relevant technical indicators, and dated analyst forecasts. Those figures are not established by the official migration sources or the 2024 article, so the historical bearish article should not be presented as current market consensus.

Polygon Support’s 2024 guide said Ethereum and Polygon zkEVM holders had no migration deadline at that time, while noting that the community could set one later.
