Costco members can add any Visa card to the Costco Digital Membership Card for checkout at Costco warehouses, according to Costco’s May 22, 2026 announcement. The option is not limited to the Costco Anywhere Visa by Citi, but Costco says it cannot be used for food-court purchases.
What changed for Costco members?
Costco says members can add any Visa card to their Digital Membership Card and use it for purchases at Costco warehouses. The company presents the feature as a way to check out with fewer physical cards to carry. Its announcement does not say that the digital payment option works at Costco gas stations or on Costco.com.
The key distinction is between a card being accepted at Costco and being supported by this particular digital feature. Costco’s separate U.S. payment-method page lists Visa among accepted payment methods at warehouses and gas stations; that does not establish that every accepted card type can be added to the Digital Membership Card.
Where can you use a Visa added to the Digital Membership Card?
Costco limits the digital payment option to warehouse purchases and explicitly excludes the food court. Do not assume the feature works at gas stations or for online orders based on Costco’s broader payment-acceptance list.

Is it limited to the Costco Anywhere Visa?
No. Costco’s announcement says “any Visa card,” so members do not have to hold the Citi-issued Costco Anywhere Visa to use the new digital checkout option. It is a convenience feature, not an announcement that members should apply for a particular card.
Should you use another Visa or the Costco Anywhere Visa?
Choose based on the card’s actual rewards and terms, not on the digital checkout feature alone. Citi says the Costco Anywhere Visa is available to current Costco members and has no annual fee while the cardholder has an active paid Costco membership. The card also serves as the member’s Costco ID while they are a cardmember.

According to Costco Travel’s 2026 card page, the card offers 5% cash back on Costco gas and 4% on other eligible gas and EV charging for the first $7,000 of combined annual spending in those categories, then 1% thereafter. It also lists 3% on restaurants and eligible travel. These rates are subject to category definitions, reward conditions and exclusions; the card is subject to credit approval. Check the current terms before applying.
Citi says rewards are issued as an annual certificate after the February billing statement closes, redeemable for cash or merchandise at U.S. Costco warehouses. That timing and redemption format may matter if you prefer rewards that are paid out more frequently or can be redeemed elsewhere.

To compare the Costco card with a Visa you already use, consider your expected spending in Costco gas, other eligible gas and EV charging, restaurants, eligible travel and other categories; the card’s cap and exclusions; the certificate’s timing and redemption rules; membership eligibility; and current APR and fees. The digital payment change does not by itself establish which card will earn you more.

What to check before using the feature
- Confirm the card you want to add is a Visa.
- Use the digital payment option for warehouse purchases, not food-court purchases.
- For gas-station or Costco.com purchases, check Costco’s applicable payment options rather than assuming the digital feature is available there.
- If evaluating the Costco Anywhere Visa, review Citi’s and Costco Travel’s current reward terms, exclusions, fees and rates before applying.
