Short answer: Coca-Cola did not confirm President Donald Trump’s July 16, 2025 claim that it had agreed to switch U.S. Coke to cane sugar. Days later, the company announced a cane-sugar version as an addition to its product range—not a replacement for its existing U.S. Coke. A later company filing lists the offering among its 2025 innovations, but does not establish that it is available nationwide today.
What Coca-Cola said after Trump’s claim
On July 16, 2025, Trump posted that Coca-Cola had agreed to use “REAL Cane Sugar in Coke in the United States.” That was his account of the discussions, not a company confirmation. Asked about it, Coca-Cola said it appreciated his enthusiasm and would share details of new offerings soon. It did not say that it was changing the recipe across its U.S. Coke lineup. The Associated Press reported the claim and the company’s response.
The next day, Coca-Cola defended high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), describing it as a corn-based sweetener with about the same calories per serving as table sugar. That statement also did not confirm a recipe overhaul. Gizmodo published the company’s statement.
What changed: a cane-sugar product was announced as an addition
On July 22, Coca-Cola said it planned to launch a U.S. offering made with U.S. cane sugar in fall 2025, expanding its Trademark Coca-Cola range. The company described it as another choice for consumers, not as a replacement for the existing product line. AP reported the announcement and that the variant would be added to the lineup. Axios also reported the company’s description of the offering as an addition.

On a July 2025 investor call, Coca-Cola chairman and CEO James Quincey said the company wanted to expand choices “to reflect consumer interest in differentiated experiences” and was “definitely looking to use the whole tool kit of available sweetening options.” His remarks support a strategy of offering options; they do not establish that the standard U.S. recipe was being replaced. AP reported Quincey’s comments.
Coca-Cola’s 2026 proxy statement subsequently listed “Coca-Cola with U.S. cane sugar” among examples of 2025 innovations in designated markets. This company filing supports that the offering was part of its reported product activity; it does not show that the product is currently stocked in every U.S. market. How the U.S. offering compares with Mexican Coke
Mexican Coke is a useful comparison, but the available reporting does not establish that it is identical to the announced U.S. cane-sugar version. AP reported that Mexican Coke is made with cane sugar and has been sold in the United States since 2005. The new U.S. offering was described as using U.S. cane sugar. These facts distinguish the products by their reported sweetener and the stated source of sugar; they do not verify identical recipes, taste, packages, or availability. The reporting does not support treating cane-sugar Coke as a health upgrade. Coca-Cola said HFCS has about the same calories per serving as table sugar. AP also reported nutritionists’ view that the sweeteners have around the same calories and are similarly likely to contribute to obesity and tooth decay. These are attributed statements, not evidence that changing the sweetener makes Coke meaningfully healthier. AP reported the nutritionists’ comparison.
