Clockwork Labs announced on June 16, 2022, that it had closed a $22 million Series A led by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z). The company said the funding would support development of its community sandbox MMORPG, BitCraft, and an unannounced database technology. This is a dated 2022 company milestone, not a new funding announcement or a statement of the company’s total capital raised.
What Clockwork Labs announced
The company’s June 16, 2022 release said a16z led the $22 million round. It separately identified Roblox founder and CEO David Baszucki as a private investor. The release also listed Supercell, CCP Games CEO Hilmar Petursson, Unity co-founder David Helgason, and Skycatcher among existing investors or industry supporters; that description does not establish that each participated in this particular Series A. Clockwork Labs’ original announcement is the source for those roles and descriptions.

Clockwork Labs co-founder Alessandro Asoni said the additional capital would let the company scale its team and take on the challenge of building BitCraft’s ambitious game world. The stated use of proceeds covered both BitCraft and an unannounced database technology the company said would power the game.
What BitCraft is
Clockwork Labs describes BitCraft as a cooperative sandbox MMORPG set in a large, editable, procedurally generated world. Its 2022 announcement pitched a single, unsharded world and cooperation over combat. The official BitCraft site describes activities including settlement building, crafting, exploration, survival, trade, and player governance. These are the developer’s design descriptions, not independent findings about how the game plays.

The company’s public server-code repository likewise describes cooperative city-building, crafting, exploration, and survival. It says the repository does not include the game client or tools for connecting to official game servers, so access to the code should not be confused with a complete playable client or a way to join the official game.
How development and access have changed
- June 16, 2022: Clockwork Labs announced the Series A while describing BitCraft as Pre-Alpha.
- March 6, 2025: The company announced a move to Steam Early Access and Beta. It said the game would remain in development and that world wipes might still be necessary. In that same post, it said the planned Steam Early Access price would be $30 starting May 29, 2025, while it still intended for BitCraft eventually to become free-to-play. Those were historical launch terms and plans, not confirmation of the current price or a guaranteed future policy. See the March 2025 Early Access announcement for the original wording; check the live Steam listing for current terms.
- February 9, 2026: In an update about a new Early Access world, Clockwork Labs said it planned a world-only wipe, with character XP carrying over, and said the Early Access world would not be wiped when the final world launched. Those are the company’s stated plans in its February 2026 wipe update, not a guarantee that no later policy change will occur.
- September 2026: The official site displayed a September 24 patch entry and a September 30 Partner Program application notice. These dated notices show ongoing updates and an application opportunity at that time; they do not establish current program eligibility or compensation.
What the funding figure does—and does not—tell readers
The announced $22 million is the size of the Series A described by Clockwork Labs in 2022. The release does not establish that amount as the company’s total capital raised, and the round size alone says nothing about player numbers, commercial performance, or the game’s eventual success.
Rank #2
In its March 2025 Early Access post, Clockwork Labs reported a team of more than 40 developers, artists, and engineers. That is a company-reported figure from that post, not an independently verified current headcount. The funding announcement and later development updates offer milestones, but they do not by themselves establish the company’s present finances or BitCraft’s current player base.
