Chris Jericho Threatened to Walk Out of WWE Over His WrestleMania X8 Payout

Jericho said he threatened to walk out after WrestleMania X8 over a payout he considered insulting. The reported 80/20 split and follow-up check remain his recollection, not independently verified figures.

Chris Jericho said he threatened to leave WWE after receiving less from WrestleMania X8 than he expected. In his recollection, Triple H received 80% of the allocated main-event payoff and Jericho received 20%; after Jericho complained, he said WWE sent him another check. The dollar amounts and the split have not been independently verified, and Jericho described a threat to walk out—not an actual departure.

What Jericho said happened after WrestleMania X8

At WrestleMania X8 in 2002, Jericho defended the Undisputed WWF Championship against Triple H and lost. In an account reported by Inside The Ropes in 2022, Jericho recalled that the payment he received afterward was far below what he had expected based on what he had heard about WrestleMania main-event payoffs.

Jericho said he complained to Jim Ross and threatened to walk out if WWE did not make the matter right. According to his account, Ross took the complaint to Vince McMahon, who sent Jericho another check. Jericho described the result as giving him “one and a half pieces of the pie.” The report does not say that he resigned or left WWE over the dispute.

How the reported split compares with Jericho’s expectation

Jericho’s remarks describe his understanding of the payoff, not documented WWE accounting. He said he had heard that a WrestleMania main-event payoff could reach seven figures, but neither his original check nor the additional check was assigned a dollar amount in the report.

What Jericho recalled What the report establishes
He expected more than the check he received, based on what he had heard about main-event payoffs, including figures in the seven-figure range. The report does not disclose the amount he expected or the amount of either check.
He said Triple H received 80% of the allocated payoff and he received 20%. Those percentages are Jericho’s recalled figures; no payroll records or independent confirmation of the split are cited.
He said a further check followed his complaint. The report does not state the additional check’s value or provide a revised percentage split.

Why “almost quit” needs qualification

The reported incident was a threatened walkout during a pay dispute. Jericho’s quoted wording was: “This was different, this was not a matter of $5,000. This was a matter of if you don’t make this right, I’ll walk the f*ck out because it was so insulting to me.” Inside The Ropes attributed the recollection to Jericho speaking during its UK tour with The Jericho Chronicles, with the account reported as coming via Talk Is Jericho.

That is different from saying Jericho actually quit. The account says he made the threat, that the complaint was taken to McMahon, and that another check followed; it does not report a completed departure.

This was separate from Jericho’s Viscera story

A 2020 Wrestling Inc. report covered a different occasion when Jericho said he considered leaving after losing to Viscera on Sunday Night Heat. That earlier near-departure story is separate from the WrestleMania X8 payout dispute and should not be treated as the same incident.
