A Tesla propulsion-battery replacement can cost roughly $4,000 to $15,500 through published independent-shop listings in 2025, before you account for taxes, towing, diagnosis, labor differences, or additional repairs. Some Model 3 and Model Y repairs fall below that range, while a Tesla warranty claim can reduce the battery portion of the bill to $0.
There is no single Tesla replacement price. The number depends on the model, battery size and chemistry, whether the pack is new or remanufactured, the cause of the failure, and whether your vehicle is still covered.

Calimotive says its used or remanufactured batteries include a two-year or 24,000-mile warranty, whichever comes first. Greentec Auto labels its prices “Shop Install Only,” so taxes, towing, diagnosis, extra parts, and local labor may not be included.

What Tesla itself will charge
Tesla does not publish one universal retail price for a high-voltage battery replacement. It creates a vehicle-specific estimate after reviewing the car and running diagnostics. The estimate can vary with the vehicle identification number, model year, drivetrain, pack size, parts availability, labor, and the suspected failure.
To find Tesla’s current estimate:
- Open the Tesla app.
- Tap Service.
- Select the relevant service request.
- Tap View estimate.
An initial estimate can show a customer charge even before warranty coverage has been confirmed. If an inspection establishes that the work is covered, Tesla says the charge should be removed. Tesla also requires owner approval for updated work.
A Tesla quote around $13,000 to $18,000 is possible in some cases, but it should not be treated as the standard 2025 price. It may involve a different pack, labor, taxes, towing, diagnostics, or related repairs.
Warranty may make the cost $0
Before budgeting thousands of dollars, check the high-voltage battery warranty for your specific Tesla. Tesla’s current U.S. warranty page lists these general limits:

The warranty that came with your car controls. Earlier vehicles can have different terms, and eligibility also depends on the diagnosis, mileage, time in service, and other warranty conditions. Check the vehicle-specific documentation rather than relying only on a general online summary.
In the Tesla app, the warranty lookup path is open the app, scroll to the bottom of the home screen, tap Specs & Warranty, then Warranty.
A warranty replacement does not necessarily mean Tesla installs a brand-new battery. Recurrent reports that Tesla may use a pack that meets the warranty requirement, which could be remanufactured or otherwise not new. Ask Tesla what type of replacement pack is being supplied and what coverage applies to that replacement.

Reduced range does not automatically mean a failed battery
Some capacity loss is normal. Battery age, mileage, chemistry, charging habits, and use all affect range. Tesla’s parts warranty excludes gradual loss in operating performance caused by normal wear and tear.

Controls > Service > Battery Health
For the optional test, Tesla says the car must be:
- Connected to an AC charger supplying at least 5 kW
- Below 20% state of charge
- In Park
- Free of active battery or thermal-system alerts
- Free of a pending software update
- Connected through Wi-Fi or cellular service
The test can take up to 24 hours and may discharge the car below 10%. It can also disable Sentry Mode and climate control during portions of the test. Some vehicles do not support the feature, and active warnings can prevent it from starting or finishing.
A shorter driving range is worth investigating, but it is not enough by itself to justify a $10,000-plus repair.
The type of failure determines the bill
Normal degradation
Gradual loss of capacity is expected wear. It may affect resale value and charging convenience without requiring a replacement pack.

Defective cells or internal faults
A defective cell, module, contactor, fuse, wiring component, or another internal fault may be repairable without replacing the entire pack. Tesla has published procedures involving defective cell modules, showing that some problems originate inside the battery rather than from general degradation.
If the vehicle is within the applicable warranty limits, an internal defect may be covered. Outside warranty, an EV-battery specialist may offer a module-level repair or a tested replacement pack, but the warranty and long-term reliability can differ substantially from Tesla’s option.

Underbody impact or structural damage
A damaged enclosure is a different financial and safety problem. Tesla technical guidance identifies dents, holes, cracks, tears, corrosion, moisture, thermal-event evidence, coolant or electrolyte leakage, and rupture as conditions requiring inspection. An open hole, crack, or tear can lead to a recommendation for complete battery replacement.
Do not continue driving a Tesla with suspected high-voltage battery damage after an impact. Tesla says the vehicle should not be driven until the battery is replaced in the relevant damage conditions. High-voltage battery work should be handled by Tesla or a properly equipped, trained specialist; it is not a DIY repair.
Low-voltage battery failure
Many alarming online “Tesla battery replacement” stories involve the separate low-voltage battery. That smaller battery powers electronics and is not the large propulsion battery under the floor. Its replacement is a fundamentally different, generally much less expensive repair.
When asking for a quote, use the term high-voltage propulsion battery if that is the component you mean.
What a replacement quote should include
Two quotes can differ by thousands of dollars simply because one is incomplete. Ask each shop to put these items in writing:
- Whether the pack is new, used, remanufactured, or refurbished
- The pack’s capacity, chemistry, and compatibility with your exact vehicle
- Installation labor and high-voltage system testing
- Coolant, seals, fasteners, wiring, calibration, or software work
- Diagnosis and towing charges
- Taxes and disposal or recycling fees
- The parts and labor warranty, including mileage and time limits
- What happens if additional damage is found after removal
For example, a $6,000 advertised pack may become materially more expensive once installation, towing, taxes, and related parts are added. Conversely, a higher Tesla estimate may include more of those services or provide a different type of replacement.
When replacement may not make financial sense
Compare the repair with the Tesla’s current market value, not just its original purchase price. A $10,000 repair on a high-mileage Model S can consume a large share of the car’s value. On a newer Model 3 or Model Y, the same repair may preserve a much more valuable vehicle and avoid the cost of replacing the entire car.

Include financing and opportunity costs in the comparison. If paying cash would eliminate your emergency fund, a cheaper used pack with a shorter warranty may not be the safest choice. If you would finance the repair, compare the total interest with the cost of selling the car and buying another vehicle.
Insurance may be relevant when an impact caused the damage, although coverage depends on the policy, deductible, fault, and insurer’s valuation. A battery warranty generally does not cover damage caused by an external collision or underbody impact.
A sensible decision process
- Identify the battery. Confirm whether the issue concerns the high-voltage propulsion pack, a module, or the low-voltage battery.
- Check warranty status. Use Specs & Warranty > Warranty in the Tesla app and verify mileage and in-service dates.
- Run Battery Health if appropriate. Use Controls > Service > Battery Health when the vehicle meets Tesla’s test conditions.
- Request Tesla diagnostics. Submit a service request in the app and save the written estimate.
- Get an EV-specialist opinion. Ask whether a module-level repair or remanufactured pack is safe and compatible.
- Compare all-in costs. Include towing, installation, taxes, related parts, downtime, and warranty coverage.
- Compare repair value with replacement-car cost. Use realistic sale or trade-in values and the financing cost of another vehicle.
Claims that should not drive your budget
- “Every Tesla battery costs $20,000 or more.” Current independent listings include prices around $4,000 to $15,500, although not all are complete installed totals.
- “Reduced range means the battery is dead.” Normal degradation is expected, and Tesla provides a Battery Health evaluation on supported vehicles.
- “Below 70% means an automatic replacement.” The time, mileage, diagnosis, vehicle warranty, and other terms still matter.
- “Warranty replacements are always brand-new packs.” That is not established; a qualifying replacement may not be new.
- “The 12-volt battery is the Tesla battery.” It is a separate low-voltage component.
