A letter or email about Equifax Data Breach Settlement compensation may be genuine—but only if it concerns a claim you previously filed or the settlement’s identity-restoration benefit. The deadline for filing a new compensation claim has passed: January 22, 2020, for the original claims period, and January 22, 2024, for eligible losses and time claims from the extended period.

The safest way to check a notice is to ignore its links, QR code and phone number. Type EquifaxBreachSettlement.com into your browser yourself, or call the administrator at 1-833-759-2982.

What the official Equifax settlement website is

The official website is EquifaxBreachSettlement.com. It is operated by JND Legal Administration, the court-appointed settlement administrator—not directly by Equifax.

The settlement’s published contact details are:

Contact method Official detail
Website EquifaxBreachSettlement.com
Telephone 1-833-759-2982
Email [email protected]
Mail Equifax Data Breach Settlement Administrator
c/o JND Legal Administration
PO Box 91318
Seattle, WA 98111-9418

Do not assume a message is real simply because its sender field matches one of these addresses. Email addresses can be spoofed. Verify the message through the website or phone number you obtained independently.

Email addresses identified as legitimate

The settlement FAQ lists these addresses for genuine communications:

A message about changing a previously selected payment method from a check to PayPal or a prepaid card could be legitimate when it came from [email protected] and identified JND Legal Administration as the court-appointed settlement administrator. However, that payment-selection-change period is now closed.

How to check a letter or email safely

  1. Do not click or scan anything in the notice. Avoid its links, QR code, reply address and telephone number until the notice has been verified.
  2. Open a new browser window and manually type EquifaxBreachSettlement.com.
  3. On the official site, select “See If My Information Was Impacted by the 2017 Data Breach.”
  4. Review the settlement’s “FAQs”, particularly the payment questions.
  5. If the notice concerns a prepaid card, use the site’s “Activate My Pre-Paid Card” option rather than the email’s link. The card-servicer phone number listed by the settlement is 1-833-678-6289.
  6. If you still cannot confirm the notice, call the settlement administrator at 1-833-759-2982.

When checking eligibility, try every last name you have used, including a maiden name and a married name.

What a real payment notice might concern

A legitimate notice can relate to:

  • A check or prepaid card for a valid out-of-pocket-loss claim
  • A payment for a valid time-spent claim
  • A pro-rata alternative-compensation payment
  • Credit monitoring selected in a previously submitted claim
  • Access to assisted identity-restoration services

Valid out-of-pocket-loss, time-spent and alternative-compensation claims may be paid by check or prepaid card. Time-spent and alternative-compensation payments can also be much smaller than the amount originally claimed because available funds are distributed proportionally among valid claims.

That is why a small payment is not, by itself, proof that a notice is fraudulent.

Why the supposed “$125 Equifax payment” is misleading

The settlement did not guarantee every affected consumer a $125 check. The original alternative-compensation benefit was described as up to $125. The final amount could be substantially reduced because payments depend on the number and validity of claims and the funds available for distribution.

Rank #2
3pk Service Charge Payment Signs, 3% Service Charge Notice, Countertop Display with Major Credit Cards and Contactless, Business Credit Card Payment Signs
  • PROFESSIONAL DISPLAY: 3pk of Service Charge signs clearly communicates credit card payment policies and the 3% service charge for crerdit card transactions to customers. No fee for cash or debit card payments
  • PAYMENT OPTIONS: Displays acceptance of major credit cards including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and contactless payment symbol
  • VERSATILE USE: Perfect for retail counters, payment stations, cash registers, and point-of-sale areas. Freestanding, easy to display signs can be displayed on any flat surface such as a counter or desk
  • MULTI-PACK VALUE: Includes three identical signs for multiple location display or backup use

A notice promising everyone a guaranteed $125—especially one asking for an upfront fee or urgent submission of sensitive information—does not match the settlement’s terms.

Prepaid-card warnings

The settlement says its prepaid card does not expire, although inactivity fees may apply after six months without activity. Card questions can be directed to 1-833-678-6289. The settlement FAQ identifies [email protected] as a legitimate sender for prepaid-card payment emails and refers cardholders to myprepaidcenter.com for servicing.

You should never have to pay an activation fee, buy gift cards, send cryptocurrency or provide a bank-account password to receive settlement money. Those demands are scam indicators.

Red flags in an Equifax compensation scam

Red flag Why it matters
An upfront payment to file a claim or release money The FTC says consumers did not have to pay to file an Equifax settlement claim.
A request for a credit-card or bank-account number from an unsolicited contact Free settlement benefits should not require unexpected disclosure of those details.
Urgent threats or a demand to click immediately Pressure is commonly used to prevent independent verification.
A look-alike website domain The official domain is EquifaxBreachSettlement.com.
A promise that you can file a new compensation claim after January 22, 2024 The compensation-claim deadlines have passed.
A demand to install software or provide remote computer access That is unrelated to the settlement payment process.

The FTC also warns that nobody should unexpectedly call, text or email asking for a credit-card or bank-account number to provide free settlement credit monitoring. Anyone calling to help you file a new claim is almost certainly a scammer.

Identity restoration is different from compensation

People who never filed a compensation claim may still qualify for the settlement’s assisted identity-restoration service if their information was affected by the breach. The FTC says this service is available through January 11, 2029.

To check, use the official website’s “See If My Information Was Impacted by the 2017 Data Breach” feature. If you are eligible, the result provides a phone number and engagement code. This benefit does not reopen the expired process for filing a new compensation claim.

What to do if the notice looks fraudulent

  1. Stop communicating with the sender.
  2. Do not click links, scan QR codes, call numbers printed in the message or provide personal or financial information.
  3. Verify the matter through EquifaxBreachSettlement.com or 1-833-759-2982.
  4. If the notice asks for money or unsolicited banking or credit-card information, report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

FAQ

Is an Equifax Data Breach Settlement letter automatically a scam?

No. Genuine notices may concern a previously filed valid claim, a payment, credit monitoring or identity-restoration services. Verify the notice independently through EquifaxBreachSettlement.com or 1-833-759-2982.

Can I still file a new Equifax breach compensation claim?

No. The original deadline was January 22, 2020, and the extended deadline for eligible losses and time claims was January 22, 2024. Both deadlines have passed.

Does everyone affected by the breach receive $125?

No. The settlement described alternative compensation as up to $125, not a guaranteed amount. Payments may be reduced substantially through pro-rata distribution.

What should I do with a suspicious Equifax payment email?

Do not click its link, scan its QR code, reply or call its number. Type EquifaxBreachSettlement.com into your browser, call 1-833-759-2982, and report demands for money or unsolicited financial information to ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

The Bottom Line

A genuine Equifax settlement notice is possible, but it should connect to a claim you already submitted or to identity-restoration eligibility. New compensation claims are closed, and no legitimate notice requires an activation fee, gift cards, cryptocurrency, remote access or a bank-account password. Verify everything through EquifaxBreachSettlement.com or 1-833-759-2982—not through the contact details supplied by an unsolicited message.
