Tesco launched Clubcard in 1995, making 2025 its 30th anniversary. It began as a points-based loyalty card and has grown into a wider membership relationship that includes digital access, member-only prices, personalised offers in some markets and rewards with partner businesses. Tesco reported more than 23 million UK Clubcard households in its 2025 annual report; that is a household count, not a count of individual active cardholders.
When did Tesco Clubcard start?
Tesco says it launched Clubcard in 1995. The scheme’s 30-year anniversary therefore fell in 2025. Tesco’s anniversary announcement and 2025 annual report provide the company’s account of its origins and subsequent development.
The available milestones show a shift in how membership is accessed and rewarded, rather than a complete year-by-year history. Tesco describes a contactless card update in 2017 and a growing role for app-based membership and digital interaction. The sources cited here do not establish every change to points rates, voucher rules or technology since launch.
How has Clubcard changed?
Clubcard’s evolution is clearest when viewed across four parts of the customer relationship: what the reward is, how members access it, how offers are selected and where rewards can be used.

What are Clubcard Prices?
Clubcard Prices are discounts available to members on selected products. They extend the scheme beyond collecting points: a member can receive a lower price at purchase rather than waiting to redeem a reward. Tesco’s anniversary announcement presents these prices as part of its loyalty offer.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) provides independent regulatory context. Its 2024 review examined loyalty pricing across five supermarkets, using a year of daily pricing data for around 50,000 grocery products that had been on loyalty-price promotion in August or November 2023. This was not a Tesco-only sample. The CMA’s executive summary is useful for understanding the regulator’s review, but it should not be read as proof that every member price delivers the same saving or as an assessment of every later personalised offer.
How do personalised Clubcard offers work?
Personalisation varies by market. In Ireland, Tesco’s FAQ says eligible customers receive selected savings based on their previous purchases. The offers are valid for seven days and must be unlocked and applied using a Clubcard or a linked online account. These mechanics are specific to Tesco Ireland and should not be assumed to apply in the same way elsewhere.

Tesco’s preliminary results for 2025/26 later reported more than 10,000 Clubcard Prices and further personalisation initiatives. That is a company-reported snapshot from a later reporting period, not a figure to combine with the 2025 annual report’s household count as if they cover the same period.
How do Clubcard vouchers and partner rewards fit in?
Points and vouchers remain part of the scheme’s value proposition, but the sources here do not establish a complete history of voucher terms or enough detail to give a universal conversion or redemption guide. For current rules, members should check Tesco’s terms for their country and account rather than rely on historic descriptions.

Tesco’s 2025 annual report also describes Reward Partners, with examples including Virgin Red and visitor attractions, as well as a bonus-points campaign connected to easyJet Holidays bookings. These examples show that rewards can reach beyond grocery shopping; they do not imply that every partner or campaign is available in every market or at all times.

Tesco reported over 23 million UK Clubcard households in its 2025 annual report. The measure is households, not individual active cardholders. It indicates the scale Tesco attributes to the scheme, but by itself does not show how frequently members use Clubcard, how much they save or how benefits compare with other loyalty programmes.

Tesco Chief Customer Officer Alessandra Bellini called Clubcard “the most rewarding loyalty scheme in the sector” in the company’s anniversary announcement. That is Tesco’s promotional claim, not an independently established ranking. The CMA’s separate review offers a regulatory perspective on grocery loyalty pricing, with the scope and limits described above.
What Clubcard’s 30th anniversary says about retail loyalty
Clubcard’s documented evolution is from a points-based card toward a broader relationship combining rewards, digital membership, instant member prices and, in some cases, purchase-history-based offers and partner rewards. The shift matters because loyalty value is no longer represented by points alone: shoppers may encounter a price available only to members, an offer selected for their account or a reward usable outside the supermarket.
Those mechanisms are not interchangeable, and their practical value depends on the prices, offers and redemption options available to an individual member in a particular market. Tesco’s reporting explains how the company positions the scheme; the CMA’s review supplies independent context on loyalty pricing, rather than a universal verdict on each offer.
