This Class 10 project explains the six consumer rights recognised by India’s National Consumer Helpline, the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, the institutions that handle consumer issues, and practical steps for seeking help. Use it as a project draft or study guide, then follow your teacher’s instructions for the required length, cover page, sources and presentation; no single page count or school format is established here.
What is consumer protection?
Consumer protection means helping people make informed choices, obtain safe goods and services, and seek redress when something goes wrong. It matters in everyday purchases—from food and household products to services bought online—because buyers need accurate information and a fair way to raise concerns.

India’s National Consumer Helpline describes the right to information this way: “Consumers have the right to know quality, price, ingredients and standards before purchasing.”
What are the six consumer rights?
The National Consumer Helpline, part of the Department of Consumer Affairs, lists six consumer rights. The examples below are hypothetical illustrations for a school project.

1. Right to safety
Consumers should be protected from goods and services that can harm their health or safety. For example, a buyer concerned that an electrical appliance is unsafe can raise the issue with the seller or appropriate consumer channel.
2. Right to be informed
Consumers should be able to learn relevant details such as quality, price, ingredients and standards before buying. A price label that leaves out a required charge or a product description that misstates ingredients illustrates why clear information matters.
3. Right to choose
Consumers should have access to a choice among goods and services at competitive prices. For example, a shopper should be able to compare available brands rather than be pressured into buying a particular one.
4. Right to be heard
Consumers should be able to present their interests and complaints to the appropriate forum. A customer who reports a service problem should have a channel through which the concern can be considered.
5. Right to seek redressal
Consumers can seek a remedy when goods or services are defective, deficient, or otherwise give rise to a valid complaint. A person who receives a defective item might ask for a remedy through the seller or an appropriate grievance route; the outcome depends on the facts and applicable process.
6. Right to consumer education
Consumers should be able to learn about their rights and how to use them. Knowing how to check product information, keep purchase records and find official help can support better decisions.
Which law and institutions protect consumers in India?
The Consumer Protection Act, 2019
The Department of Consumer Affairs identifies the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 as the relevant statutory framework. Its official source index also lists rules and regulations under the Act, so the Act should be named accurately and should not be treated as the only material governing every current procedure.
The CCPA and consumer commissions have different roles
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has a consumer-rights and class-wide enforcement role, according to the National Consumer Helpline knowledge base. District, State and National consumer commissions are dispute-redressal bodies. The roles are different: class-wide consumer protection is not the same function as deciding an individual consumer dispute.

The National Consumer Helpline knowledge base describes e-commerce as buying or selling goods or services, including digital products, over a digital or electronic network. Consumer issues can therefore arise in online transactions as well as in physical shops.

Start with records and clear details
For a real complaint, keep the bill or receipt, order records, relevant photos, warranty details and communications with the seller or service provider. These records can help explain what was bought, what went wrong and what response has already been received.
Contact the National Consumer Helpline
The National Consumer Helpline’s rights page lists toll-free number 1915 and service hours of 8AM to 8PM. It also lists online, app, UMANG and WhatsApp channels. Contact details and hours can change, so check the live official page for current instructions before using a channel.
Understand the difference between assistance and formal redressal
The helpline is a route for consumer assistance. Consumer commissions are formal dispute-redressal bodies. Which route is appropriate depends on the issue and the current official process; the helpline’s knowledge base is a summary, not a substitute for checking current filing instructions. The CCPA’s class-wide role is distinct from an individual consumer’s complaint pathway.
What remedies may be available?
The National Consumer Helpline knowledge base lists possible forms of relief that include removal of defects, replacement, refund, compensation and corrective advertising. These are possible statutory remedies, not guaranteed results for every complaint. The same source says mediation may be available when the parties consent.
Conclusion
Consumer rights help people seek safe products, honest information, meaningful choice, a voice, redressal and education. An informed consumer can compare before buying, preserve records and use official channels when a problem arises. For a school submission, organise these points in the format and length your teacher requires.
