Not everywhere on one confirmed date. Coles has removed or replaced single-use plastic fresh-produce bags in specific locations, including an ACT trial and later changes in South Australia and Western Australia. That is separate from its 2018 phase-out of plastic checkout carry bags, which were used to carry a whole shop rather than bag loose produce.
What changed, and where?
Coles’ published announcements describe location-specific changes to fresh-produce bags, not a nationwide phase-out across every store. The policies also distinguish produce barrier bags from checkout carry bags, deli bags and bags used for online orders.
| Location or change | What Coles said | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Australian Capital Territory | Coles said it would remove single-use plastic fresh-produce barrier bags from its stores from 14 September 2022. | A trial across all 12 Coles stores in the ACT; Coles said bags would still be used in delis and Coles Online orders at that time. Paper bags remained available for mushrooms in the produce section. Coles’ 2022 announcement |
| South Australia | Coles announced certified compostable fresh-produce bags in all its South Australian stores in September 2023. | Coles estimated this change would reduce plastic produce-bag use by 28 million bags in one year; that figure is Coles’ estimate, not an independently verified measurement. Coles’ announcement |
| Western Australia and other jurisdictions | Coles’ 2024 Sustainability Report says it continued removing single-use plastic produce bags in line with jurisdictional legislation and reports a compostable-bag rollout in South Australia. Its 2024 corporate release also describes produce-bag changes in WA. | The material describes changes tied to local legislation and named locations; it does not establish that every Coles store nationwide has the same bag policy. Coles’ 2024 Sustainability Report and 2024 corporate release |
| Checkout carry bags | Coles began phasing out single-use plastic carry bags in 2018. Its April 2018 announcement set 1 July 2018 as the removal date for Victoria, NSW, WA and Queensland stores. | These were shopping bags for carrying purchases, not fresh-produce barrier bags. What can you use for loose fruit and vegetables?
- Bring a reusable produce bag. Coles has promoted reusable mesh bags for loose produce. Its product listing for Coles reusable mesh produce bags currently says “Currently unavailable,” so check the listing or store rather than assuming they are in stock: Coles reusable mesh produce bags.
- Use the store’s available bag. The bag type can depend on the location. Coles announced certified compostable produce bags in South Australian stores; compostable-bag rules and availability should not be assumed to be identical in every state.
- Use a reused cardboard box if offered. In 2024, Coles ran an eight-week trial of free reused cardboard produce boxes in five stores for carrying loose fruit and vegetables. This was a limited trial, not a permanent nationwide option.
For online grocery orders, packing options are a separate issue from bags in the produce aisle. Coles says delivery bagging options depend on the local store; its delivery page currently lists paper bags for $2 per order and marks no-bag delivery as unavailable. Check the delivery page and the options shown for your own order, because these details can change: Coles delivery and bagging options.
How to check the current policy at your local Coles
- Check Coles’ local store information or ask staff whether loose produce is offered in a compostable bag, paper bag or another option.
- If you prefer to avoid a store-provided bag, bring a reusable produce bag and confirm it can be weighed at the produce scale.
- For delivery, review the bagging choices shown for your selected store at checkout; do not assume the in-store produce-bag policy applies to order packing.
- Follow the label on any compostable or other packaging for disposal instructions. Coles points customers to the Australasian Recycling Label for component-specific guidance; compostable packaging should not automatically be put in a council green bin. Coles guidance on reducing plastic
Why the checkout-bag date does not answer the produce-bag question
Coles announced a phase-out of single-use shopping carry bags in July 2017, then said in April 2018 that bags would be removed from stores in several states by 1 July that year. Coles’ consumer guidance summarizes the carry-bag phase-out as occurring in 2018. Those dates concern bags for carrying purchases after checkout, not the thin barrier bags used for loose fruit and vegetables. Coles’ 2017 announcement and Coles’ consumer guidance
