Coles said it was taking the step as a precaution while it reviewed knife sales. The available sources do not establish whether that nationwide withdrawal remains Coles’ policy today.
What prompted Coles’ decision?
ABC reported that a 13-year-old boy allegedly stabbed Coles employee Claudia Campomayor Watt at the Yamanto Central Shopping Centre store in Ipswich, Queensland. The report said she was in critical but stable condition when it was published; that was a contemporaneous update, not information about her condition today. The report does not establish a court finding.
Coles said it would withdraw kitchen knives from stores nationwide. An unnamed spokesperson told ABC: “Coles complies with all legislation regarding the sale of kitchen knives, and this withdrawal is being taken out of an abundance of caution as we conduct a review.” The spokesperson also said: “The safety of our team members and customers is our number one priority across all aspects of our business.” ABC News’ report on the announcement.
Does Coles still ban knife sales?
The sources available here do not confirm the outcome of Coles’ review or whether the broad withdrawal is still in place. ABC reported that SMEG kitchen knives would remain available at service desks until 21 January 2025. Coles’ official SMEG campaign page says the campaign range is no longer available, but that does not establish the status of every knife category or Coles’ current store policy.

How the announcement fits the laws and other retailer responses
Queensland comments in January 2025
ABC reported in January 2025 that Queensland had banned sales of controlled items, including kitchen or steak knives, to people under 18 the previous year. In response to a possible gap in the legislation, Premier David Crisafulli said: “If there’s a loophole there, you bet we’re going to close it.” Those were historical comments in the context of the January 2025 report, not a current summary of Queensland law.
South Australian retail-storage rules from 1 July 2026
South Australia provides a separate, current jurisdiction-specific example. Its Attorney-General’s Department says changes effective 1 July 2026 require prescribed knives in publicly accessible retail areas to be secured in a locked cabinet or container, or securely tethered. The guidance also requires notices prohibiting sales to under-18s and defines which knives and exceptions are covered. Woolworths’ earlier response
ABC reported that Woolworths temporarily stopped national knife sales after a 2021 incident in Brunswick, then resumed sales in specialised high-grade clamshell packaging. The January 2025 report said 350 Woolworths stores still did not sell knives at that time. This is a historical figure and does not establish Woolworths’ current policy. The contrast is that the reported Woolworths response included a later return to packaged sales, while Coles described a withdrawal during a review; the sources do not establish the review’s eventual outcome for Coles.
