If you want to learn Excel without adding another bill to your budget, the difficult part is not finding free lessons. It is finding a course where the certificate is also free.
Most platforms let you study Excel at no cost but charge for a certificate, call the document a certificate of completion, or offer only a learner record or badge. The clearest current exception is Alison’s Microsoft Excel 2010 course, which Alison’s Help Center lists among courses eligible for a free digital certificate. Check the certificate option in your account before relying on it, because Alison’s course page also displays its general paid-certificate language.
Best free Excel course with a certificate
Alison: Microsoft Excel 2010
Alison’s Microsoft Excel 2010 course is the strongest match for the search “free online Excel course with certificate.” Alison’s Help Center, updated March 19, 2026, specifically lists it among courses offering a free Digital Certificate.
| Detail | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Cost of lessons | Free to study |
| Estimated time | About 6–10 hours |
| Excel version | Excel 2010 |
| Assessment requirement | At least 80% in every assessment |
| Certificate | Alison lists a free digital certificate for this course |
The course covers worksheets, printing, templates, charts, tables, formulas, functions, VLOOKUP, IF statements, date calculations, keyboard shortcuts, and macros. That makes it more useful than a course limited to formatting and basic data entry.

There is one important qualification: Alison’s individual course page still includes its standard wording about purchasing certificates, while Alison generally treats certificates as optional paid products. Before enrolling solely for the credential, complete the course and look at the certificate option shown inside your Alison account. Do not assume that every Excel course on Alison has the same free-certificate treatment.
Other free Excel courses—and what their certificates really cost
Great Learning Academy: Excel for Beginners
Great Learning’s Excel for Beginners provides free, self-paced access to the learning material. It is a reasonable option if your priority is learning practical spreadsheet skills rather than obtaining a free credential.
The course covers cell references, tables and borders, dates and times, sorting and filtering, IF conditions, descriptive-analysis functions, charts, and presentations. The page currently shows approximately 6.75 learning hours, although its FAQ says approximately 7.5 hours. Treat that as an estimate rather than a firm workload.
The certificate is not free. Great Learning’s FAQ says learners must pay a certificate fee after completing the course. It also describes the document as a certificate of completion, not a professional certification. That distinction matters when you list the course on a résumé or LinkedIn profile.
edX: Try It: Intro to Spreadsheets
edX’s Try It: Intro to Spreadsheets is an introductory course covering Excel and Google Sheets. You can create a free edX account and select the audit track to study without paying.

- Smoother, bolder, cleaner, and quicker drying than the leading competitor (Compared to the leading competitor; across black, blue, and red ink based on 95% reliability)
- Gel pen with no smear, no bleed technology
- Intensely bold gel ink colors offer always vivid writing
- Contoured rubber grip for a comfortable writing experience
- Perfect for home, office, and school
The free audit option does not include a certificate. To earn the verified certificate, you must upgrade to the paid track. edX makes this distinction explicit with options such as “Choose between a verified certificate or an audit track” and “Upgrade your free edX course to a paid course to earn your certificate.”
This course is best for someone who wants a low-cost introduction to spreadsheets, not someone who needs a no-cost credential.
edX/RIT: Data Processing and Analysis with Excel
edX also lists Rochester Institute of Technology’s Data Processing and Analysis with Excel. The course can be audited for free, but the audit route does not include the verified certificate.

Platforms that do not provide the advertised free Excel certificate
Udemy
New free Udemy courses do not offer certificates of completion. Udemy certificates are available for paid, approved courses. The narrow exception is for learners who enrolled in certain free courses before March 17, 2020; that exception does not apply to new enrollments.

A free Udemy Excel course can still be useful for learning a specific task, but do not enroll expecting a downloadable credential.
Microsoft Learn
Microsoft Learn provides free Excel-related training and learning paths. Completing ordinary modules or paths can add achievements, badges, trophies, or transcript records to your profile. These are useful evidence of learning, but they are not the same as a downloadable certificate or professional Excel certification.
Microsoft Learn is a good choice if you want current Microsoft 365-related learning and do not need a course certificate. It can also supplement an older Excel 2010 course with newer concepts and workflows.

Certificate of completion versus Excel certification
“Certificate” can mean several different things. Before paying a fee—or advertising a credential to an employer—identify what you are actually receiving.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Credential type | What it usually proves | Typical example |
|---|---|---|
| Certificate of completion | You completed a platform’s course and met its course requirements | Great Learning certificate |
| Verified certificate | You completed a platform course, often with identity verification; normally paid | edX verified certificate |
| Professional certification | You passed a formal exam designed to assess job-related skills | Microsoft Office Specialist Excel |
| Learner record or transcript | A platform records your completed modules or learning path | Microsoft Learn profile or transcript |
| Digital badge | A shareable achievement issued by a platform | Platform learning achievement |
A course certificate can show initiative, but it does not automatically demonstrate proficiency. For a finance-related job, employers may care more about whether you can build a reliable budget, reconcile transactions, use lookup formulas, create a cash-flow report, and explain your assumptions.
When a professional Excel certification makes sense
If you need a recognized industry credential, look at Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Excel certification rather than relying only on a free course certificate. MOS is exam-based, not awarded for completing Microsoft Learn modules or an online class.
- MO-210: Microsoft Excel Associate, Microsoft 365 Apps
- MO-211: Microsoft Excel Expert, Microsoft 365 Apps
- MO-200: Microsoft Excel Associate, Office 2019
- MO-201: Microsoft Excel Expert, Office 2019
The exams are timed at approximately 50 minutes. Prices vary by country or region and must be confirmed with the exam provider, so MOS is not a free alternative. A sensible budget approach is to use free courses and practice files first, then pay for the exam only if the credential supports a specific job, promotion, or career change.
How to choose the right course for your goal
- Decide whether you need skills or a credential. If you need to manage a household budget or freelance income, free lessons may be enough. If a job posting requests proof of training, confirm which credential the employer accepts.
- Check the Excel version. Alison’s qualifying course is based on Excel 2010, while current Microsoft 365 versions may have different menus and features. Core formulas remain useful, but newer tools may not match exactly.
- Read the payment terms before starting. Look for words such as “audit,” “verified certificate,” “certificate fee,” and “full course, no certificate.”
- Save proof of completion. Download the certificate if it is free, save the course URL and completion date, and retain project files showing what you can do.
- Build a small finance project. Create a monthly budget with income, fixed costs, variable spending, savings, debt payments, and a running balance. Add a chart and use formulas such as SUM, IF, and lookup functions. A practical work sample often communicates more than a generic completion document.
A budget-friendly learning path
Start with Alison’s Microsoft Excel 2010 course if the free digital certificate is visible in your account. Use Great Learning or edX for additional practice if you do not need a free certificate. Microsoft Learn can help you become familiar with current Microsoft 365 concepts.

Once you can confidently format a worksheet, use absolute and relative references, sort and filter data, create charts, and troubleshoot common formula errors, decide whether a paid verified certificate or MOS exam has a clear return on investment. Do not pay simply because a course page uses the phrase “free certificate” in its headline.

The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can I become Microsoft Excel certified for free?
Not through ordinary Microsoft Learn modules or free online courses. Microsoft Office Specialist Excel credentials require passing a timed, proctored exam, and exam pricing varies by region. Microsoft Learn achievements are not equivalent to MOS certification.
The Bottom Line
For free Excel learning plus the best documented chance of a free certificate, begin with Alison’s Microsoft Excel 2010 course and verify the certificate offer in your account. Great Learning and edX are useful free-learning choices, but their certificates cost extra or are excluded from the free track. Coursera, Udemy, and Microsoft Learn can also teach valuable skills, but they should not be described as guaranteed sources of free Excel certificates.
