Maneka Gambhir went to the Enforcement Directorate’s Kolkata office at 12:30 a.m. on September 12, 2022, because her summons reportedly gave that time. The ED later described the time as a typographical error and issued a fresh summons for later that day, around 2 p.m.
What happened with the summons?
Contemporaneous reports said the notice instructed Gambhir, identified as Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee’s sister-in-law, to appear at 12:30 a.m. Hindustan Times reported that the intended time was 12:30 p.m. and quoted Gambhir, via PTI: “I was served with notice to report at 12:30 am and so I had come,” (Hindustan Times, September 12, 2022).
Scroll reported that Gambhir arrived at the Kolkata office at 12:30 a.m. and posted a photograph with the notice outside the locked office. The agency said the time was a typographical error and issued a fresh summons for around 2 p.m. that day; Hindustan Times also reported that she arrived in the afternoon (Scroll, September 12, 2022).
Why was the ED questioning her?
The summons was part of the ED’s investigation into an alleged money-laundering angle in a coal-smuggling case linked to Eastern Coalfields mines near Asansol, West Bengal. Hindustan Times identified the mines as Kunustoria and Kajora and reported that the investigation was under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (Hindustan Times, September 12, 2022).

The same report said the Calcutta High Court had directed the ED to question Gambhir at its Kolkata regional office rather than in Delhi, and not to take coercive steps until the next hearing. Those were reported procedural directions, not a finding on the allegations.
Scroll reported that the ED alleged transactions in the case could involve Rs 1,300 crore, with much of the money going to influential people. That was an agency allegation reported in 2022; it is not established here as a court finding or as the final status of the figure (Scroll, September 12, 2022).

What the 2022 reports do—and do not—establish
The reports explain why Gambhir appeared at the office at midnight and describe the immediate correction to the summons. They concern an investigation and allegations; they do not establish that Gambhir or anyone else committed an offence. They also do not establish the investigation’s later status or subsequent court developments.
