That puts the reported Atto 2 base price about 31.5% below the Tesla’s—roughly the “30% less” described in the report. The figures are a dated, market-specific comparison, not verified current prices or proof that the two offers were equivalent.
How much cheaper was the BYD Atto 2 than a Tesla Model 3?
For the Hong Kong comparison reported on August 9, 2025, the Atto 2 base price was $21,700 and the entry Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive price was about $31,700, according to Interesting Engineering. The difference between those reported figures is about $10,000. Dividing that difference by the reported Tesla price makes the Atto 2 about 31.5% lower, consistent with the report’s rounded “about 30%” framing.
The report does not establish whether the prices included the same taxes, incentives, fees, or purchase conditions, or whether the compared vehicles had equivalent equipment. Nor does it verify current Hong Kong pricing or availability. Treat the comparison as a snapshot from that report, rather than a live quote or a worldwide price advantage.
What the reported price does—and does not—tell a first-time buyer
A lower entry price can matter
A roughly $10,000 difference in reported base prices could change how much a buyer needs to finance or pay upfront. But a base-price gap alone cannot show which car costs less to own. A fair comparison requires local, same-date prices for comparable trims, calculated after the same taxes and incentives, plus financing terms and ownership costs.

The models are not automatically like-for-like
The report describes the BYD as the Atto 2 and notes that the model is called Yuan Up in China. Names, model lineups, and specifications can vary by market. The report also gives the Atto 2 up to 254 miles of range and a 10–80% charging time of 38 minutes; these are the article’s claims, not independently confirmed current Hong Kong specifications. Range and charging figures are useful only when their test methods, local vehicle version, and charging conditions are understood.
Check the costs that a headline price leaves out
Before treating one vehicle as the cheaper choice, compare the actual offers available to you and account for:

- Trim, included equipment, and any required options.
- Taxes, incentives, registration charges, fees, and purchase conditions.
- Loan amount, interest rate, loan term, and total repayment—not just the monthly payment.
- Insurance, warranty and service coverage, and expected maintenance.
- Access to charging where you live and travel, and the cost and convenience of charging.
- Expected range in your own driving conditions and the time available for charging.
The cited report does not resolve these factors for a current Hong Kong purchase, so they need to be checked against local offers and your circumstances.
Why the Hong Kong comparison should not be generalized
EV affordability and the range of lower-priced models differ substantially by market. The International Energy Agency’s Global EV Outlook 2025 reports that, using 2024 data, about 40% of available battery-electric vehicle models in China were priced below USD 25,000. In Europe, around 3% of available BEV models were below EUR 25,000; in the United States, only two were below USD 30,000. These are model-availability figures for those markets and thresholds, not direct comparisons of vehicle sales or Hong Kong prices.

The IEA also reports that China’s median BEV purchase price was around USD 24,000 in 2024, and that nearly 95% of small-car sales there were electric. Yet small cars represented less than 10% of China’s overall sales. The figures help explain how a lower-priced EV can be more common in one market than another, but they do not establish what a buyer should pay for an Atto 2 in Hong Kong today.
BYD’s own 2025 China announcement listed presale prices of RMB 270,000–350,000 for the Han L EV and RMB 280,000–360,000 for the Tang L EV. Those are different vehicles and a different market; they should not be substituted for the Hong Kong Atto 2 price.

Is the Atto 2 a good first EV?
The reported entry price makes the Atto 2 relevant to a first-time buyer comparing lower-cost EV options in Hong Kong, but the price report alone cannot establish whether it is the right purchase. Decide using a current local quote for the exact version you would buy, then compare total financing and ownership costs alongside practical fit: range for your regular trips, charging access, warranty and service support, and the Tesla alternative’s equivalent costs and equipment.
For current availability, specifications, and purchase terms, use local manufacturer or dealer information. BYD’s media hub publishes company updates, but it does not by itself verify current Hong Kong Atto 2 pricing.
