Amazon Prime is more than a shipping subscription, but several benefits have limits, extra charges, or renewal rules that can affect your budget. The biggest surprises include paying for a rental you thought was included, finding ads in Prime Video, overlooking a trial renewal, or assuming Amazon Photos includes unlimited video storage.
Use these 21 tips to get more value from Prime while avoiding unexpected charges and outdated assumptions. Availability, pricing, and benefits can vary by country; the details below focus primarily on the current U.S. offering.

1. Look for the delivery promise, not just the Prime logo
The Prime badge alone does not guarantee the fastest possible delivery. Prime shipping applies to eligible items, while Same-Day and One-Day Delivery are limited by the product, seller, inventory, delivery address, and local availability.
Amazon says it offers more than 300 million items with free Prime shipping in the U.S., but that does not mean every item on Amazon qualifies. Before ordering, confirm the delivery date and shipping cost shown on the product page.

2. Check your delivery option at checkout
Checkout may offer several Prime-related delivery choices, including standard Prime shipping, One-Day Delivery, Same-Day Delivery, grocery delivery, or other local services. These options can differ even for items in the same order.
Review the final delivery date and any fee before clicking the purchase button. If speed is not important, choosing a slower eligible option may help you avoid fees or unnecessary impulse purchases.
3. Confirm that a Prime Video title is included
Prime Video combines several types of content:
- Titles included with Prime
- Rentals
- Purchases
- Paid Prime Video add-on subscriptions
Use the Included with Prime filter, or inspect the title page before selecting Watch now. A title appearing inside Prime Video does not automatically mean it is free with your membership.
4. Prime Video is not fully ad-free
The standard U.S. Prime membership includes Prime Video with limited ads. Amazon offers a separate Prime Video Ad Free option for an additional charge. Live events and some other programming may still contain advertising.

5. Create separate Prime Video profiles
Prime Video supports up to six profiles per Amazon account: one default profile and up to five additional adult or child profiles. Profiles keep recommendations, viewing progress, and Watchlist data separate.
Separate profiles are useful for preventing another household member’s viewing habits from changing your recommendations—and for making it easier to see which shows you have actually finished.
6. Protect profiles and purchases with a PIN
A Prime Video PIN can help stop children or other household members from making purchases or opening restricted content. On the web, follow these steps:

- Select Edit profile, then choose the account or profile.
- Select Manage beside Profile/Account PIN and locks.
Account-level controls can lock profiles, restrict purchases and viewing, and prevent profile creation or deletion. This is worth setting up if your television, tablet, or streaming device is shared.

7. Download Prime Video before traveling
Offline downloads are supported on Fire tablets and the Prime Video apps for iOS, Android, macOS, and Windows 10/11. For a movie, open its detail page and choose the download option. For a series, download the full season or select individual episodes.
Downloading over Wi-Fi before a trip can reduce mobile-data usage and avoid relying on expensive or unreliable hotel and airplane internet.
8. Do not expect downloaded videos to cast through Chromecast or AirPlay
Downloaded Prime Video content cannot be cast through Chromecast or AirPlay. If you want offline playback on a television, you need a supported device and, where applicable, the right adaptor.

9. Understand the difference between rentals and purchases
Prime Video rentals and purchases are not interchangeable. Rentals are available only for a limited period. Purchased titles are generally available for streaming or download, but licensing restrictions can sometimes make a purchased title unavailable.
Check the rental viewing window and the purchase or rental price before paying. If you only expect to watch a movie once, a rental may be cheaper; if you expect to revisit it, compare the long-term value of purchasing it with another streaming option.
10. Prime Music is not Music Unlimited
Amazon says Prime members receive access to more than 100 million songs, but the standard Prime Music benefit emphasizes shuffle playback and selected All-Access Playlists. It is not the same as unrestricted, on-demand access to every song.

11. Use Amazon Photos for photo backup, but watch the video limit
Prime includes unlimited full-resolution photo storage and 5 GB of video storage. The phrase “unlimited Amazon Photos storage” does not mean unlimited storage for videos.

Before moving a large phone library to Amazon Photos, check how much of it consists of video. A video-heavy backup can reach the 5 GB limit quickly and may lead to a separate storage purchase.
12. Treat Prime Reading as a rotating catalog
Prime Reading includes a changing selection of eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, comics, and manga. Titles can leave the catalog, so it is not a permanent library.
Prime members can also choose one free monthly title through Amazon First Reads from a curated selection. If you want to keep a book permanently, verify whether you are claiming it through First Reads or borrowing it through Prime Reading.
13. Claim Prime Gaming benefits regularly
Prime Gaming includes rotating free PC games, in-game content, and one monthly Twitch channel subscription. Benefits can expire or rotate out if you do not claim them.
Check the Prime Gaming page periodically rather than waiting until the end of the month. The Twitch subscription is particularly easy to overlook, even though it can provide a separate benefit at no additional cost to an eligible Prime member.
14. Check Luna separately from Prime Gaming
Prime members receive access to an evolving, rotating selection of Luna games, including GameNight titles. The catalog and availability can change.
Do not assume that claiming a Prime Gaming PC game gives you access to the same title on Luna, or that a game currently available through Luna will remain there indefinitely. Review each service’s current catalog before paying for another gaming subscription.
15. Activate the included Grubhub+ benefit
Eligible Prime members can activate Grubhub+ benefits, including $0 delivery fees on eligible orders, lower service fees, 5% credit on eligible pickup orders, and exclusive offers. Amazon’s detailed description currently specifies eligible orders over $12, and other restrictions or minimums apply.
Activation is not the same as automatically receiving the benefit on every food order. Link or activate the offer through the applicable Prime or Grubhub flow, then check the order summary for delivery fees, service fees, taxes, tip, and the qualifying minimum.

16. Use Amazon Family instead of searching for Amazon Household
Amazon Household was renamed Amazon Family on March 7, 2025. To find it on the web:

- Select Your Account.
- Choose Your Amazon Family.
In the Amazon Shopping app, follow these steps:
- Open Me.
- Select Your Account.
- Choose Manage Your Amazon Family.
If an older guide tells you to find “Amazon Household,” its instructions may not match the current menus.
17. Know Amazon Family’s sharing limits
Amazon Family allows one additional adult to share many Prime benefits, including shopping and delivery benefits. Up to four children can be included for designated benefits, and Amazon Photos can be shared with up to five additional adults.
Adults must live in the same household and use their own Amazon accounts. Do not assume that every Prime service or every digital purchase is shared in the same way; check the benefit-specific rules before changing accounts.
18. Separate adult accounts do not expose each other’s orders
When adults use their individual Amazon accounts through Amazon Family, they cannot see one another’s orders or content. That makes the arrangement more practical for privacy and gift shopping.
Children’s activity is different: it can be managed through the Amazon Kids Parent Dashboard. Review those controls if you are sharing benefits with children.
19. Use Prime’s early-access deal window carefully
Prime members receive access to Lightning Deals 30 minutes before the general public, in addition to Prime-exclusive events such as Prime Day and Prime Big Deal Days.
Early access can help you buy limited-stock items, but it can also encourage rushed spending. Compare the current price with recent prices, set a budget before the event, and do not treat a countdown timer as proof that an item is a bargain.

At 15 gallons, a 10-cent-per-gallon discount saves $1.50. That is useful if the participating station is already convenient, but driving farther to obtain the discount can erase the savings.
21. Cancel through Prime membership controls
Removing a payment method does not cancel Prime. To end the membership on a desktop browser:
- Open Accounts & Lists.
- Select Prime Membership, then Manage Membership.
- Choose End Membership.
- Complete the confirmation screens.
In the Amazon Shopping app:
- Open Profile.
- Select Manage Prime Membership, then Manage Membership.
- Choose End Membership.
- Complete the confirmation screens.
Trials and paid memberships otherwise renew according to their terms, so record the renewal date when you start a trial or decide that Prime is no longer worth the cost.
