China’s Flash Ironmaking: What the 3,600-Times-Faster Claim Really Means

China’s reported flash ironmaking method may produce molten iron in seconds, but its 3,600-times-faster comparison applies to ironmaking—not finished steel. The coal-free and efficiency claims still need independent commercial-scale verification.

China’s reported flash ironmaking method is said to produce molten iron in three to six seconds, compared with five to six hours for the ironmaking step in a conventional blast furnace. That is the basis of the “3,600 times faster” headline—not a claim that finished steel is made in seconds. The process is described as pilot-stage, and its reported coal-free and efficiency benefits remain claims by the research team rather than independently verified commercial results.

What is flash ironmaking?

Flash ironmaking is a process for turning finely ground iron ore into molten iron. In reporting on the work, ore powder is injected into a very hot furnace, where liquid iron droplets form and collect into a stream of iron. The researchers say the resulting molten iron can be cast or used in “one-step steelmaking.” That does not mean the entire steelmaking process, from ore to finished steel, takes only a few seconds. South China Morning Post coverage attributes the work to a team led by Zhang Wenhai, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and reports that the team described the process in a November 2024 paper in Nonferrous Metals.

What does “3,600 times faster” compare?

The headline figure compares the reported duration of one ironmaking step with the time attributed to conventional blast-furnace ironmaking:

Process being compared Reported time What the figure describes
Flash ironmaking 3–6 seconds The ironmaking step that produces molten iron, as reported by the research team.
Conventional blast-furnace ironmaking 5–6 hours The conventional ironmaking process used as the comparison in the report.

Dividing five to six hours by three to six seconds produces a broad ratio in the thousands; the “3,600 times” wording is a headline comparison of process times. It is not a measured comparison of total plant output, a complete steelmaking route, or the time required to make finished steel. The available report does not establish identical measurement boundaries for the two routes.

What has been demonstrated so far?

A December 2024 report from the South East Asia Iron and Steel Institute (SEAISI), citing Mysteel Global and the paper, describes a pilot-scale furnace system. It says more than 90% of injected concentrates were reduced to hot metal suitable for steelmaking within 10 seconds. That is a distinct reported result from the three-to-six-second headline: it specifies a reduction proportion and a pilot-furnace context. SEAISI’s report characterizes flash ironmaking as experimental.

Professor Zhang was quoted in a technology report as saying, “The completed laboratory and pilot tests have proven the feasibility of the process.” This is a reported comment, not an independent finding that the process is ready for continuous commercial operation. The sources describe laboratory and pilot work; they do not document independently verified, sustained commercial production.

Is it really coal-free and lower-carbon?

The research team says the method eliminates coal and could improve energy-use efficiency by more than one-third. These are team claims and calculations reported in 2024, not independently audited commercial-plant measurements. The reporting also describes the approach as producing near-zero carbon dioxide emissions, but the material available does not provide a lifecycle emissions assessment. A coal-free process claim by itself does not establish zero emissions across electricity generation, ore preparation, furnace operation, and the rest of the production chain. Mysteel Global’s report presents the claims in the context of the reported technology progress.

For a robust environmental comparison, the routes would need to be assessed at the same system boundary, including their energy sources, ore preparation, product quality, operating scale, and direct and lifecycle emissions. The cited accounts do not provide an apples-to-apples comparison on those measures.

What is not yet established?

  • Whether the reported timings can be sustained in continuous commercial production.
  • Commercial-scale output rates and independently measured product-quality results.
  • Independently verified commercial energy savings or emissions figures, including lifecycle emissions.
  • Enough published methods and measurement detail to assess all the reported comparisons independently.

The reported work is a potentially important ironmaking development, but pilot feasibility and a striking process-time comparison are not the same as proven plant economics or commercial-scale climate performance.

Why a separate stainless-steel plant report is not evidence of deployment

Coverage of a Baosteel Desheng vacuum oxygen decarburization system concerns stainless-steel refining, a different process from flash ironmaking. It does not show that Baosteel Desheng installed the flash ironmaking furnace. The VOD system report should not be treated as evidence of flash ironmaking deployment.
