Chase’s current guidance says it will not allow Zelle payments it identifies as originating from contact through social media. Its service agreement says it may delay, decline or block such a payment. The rule is specific to Chase and to the payment’s identified origin—not a blanket ban on paying every business or seller with Zelle.

What Chase’s Zelle rule says

Chase for Business says, “For your protection, Chase will not allow you to send Zelle payments identified as originating from a contact through social media.” The current Chase Zelle Service Agreement gives Chase discretion to delay, decline or block a payment it identifies as originating from social-media contact. The agreement includes social-media marketplaces and messaging apps, and says Chase may ask the sender about the payment’s purpose or how they contacted the recipient.

That distinction matters: the policy described by Chase is about how the sender connected with the recipient. It is not evidence of a universal Zelle rule applying to every bank, nor does it say all business payments or online purchases are prohibited.

Can you still use Zelle to pay a business?

Chase lists payments to trusted, eligible suppliers and service providers among small-business uses for Zelle. That does not guarantee a particular transfer will go through: Chase may still flag a payment if it identifies social-media contact as its origin. See Chase’s small-business Zelle information for its description of the service.

Chase says Zelle is intended for friends, family and other trusted recipients, not for buying goods from unfamiliar retailers or merchants. Its agreement states: “Neither we nor Zelle offer purchase protection for non-receipt, damage, or ‘not as described’ claims related to the purchase of goods and/or services.” If you are considering a purchase from someone you do not know, use a payment method whose terms provide protections relevant to that transaction. Chase notes that some credit-card purchases may have purchase protection, but coverage depends on the purchase and applicable terms; reimbursement is not guaranteed.

Why Chase is restricting these payments

Chase reports that nearly 50% of scams reported to the bank in the second half of 2025 originated on social media. That figure describes reports to Chase during that period; it is not an estimate of all scams or all payment fraud. Chase’s social-media scam guidance describes several common patterns:

  • Fake seller: Someone advertises equipment, supplies or services, takes a deposit and disappears.
  • Fake buyer: Someone sends a false payment screenshot and asks the seller to refund an alleged overpayment.
  • Fake account-upgrade request: A scammer claims the recipient must pay to upgrade a business Zelle account or increase a transaction limit. Chase says neither it nor Zelle will ask users to send money for this purported upgrade, and that no such upgraded account exists for that purpose.

What to do if Chase blocks a payment

A decline or delay may mean Chase identified the payment as originating from contact through social media. The agreement allows Chase to ask about the payment and the contact behind it. Answer any questions truthfully, and do not try to bypass a restriction by changing the description or sending the money another way to the same unfamiliar recipient.

If the seller is a legitimate business, verify it independently and ask about a payment method appropriate for the transaction. Find contact information on the business’s established website or other trusted source rather than relying only on the social-media message or listing. A payment to a trusted eligible supplier may be a legitimate business use, but it is not guaranteed to clear if the social-media rule is triggered.

How buyers and sellers can reduce risk

If you are buying

  • Check the seller’s identity, website, contact details and listing independently; compare the item and price with the business’s legitimate site.
  • Do not let urgency pressure you into sending money to an unfamiliar seller. Avoid Zelle for an unfamiliar goods purchase, because Chase says it does not provide purchase protection for goods claims.
  • Choose a payment method based on its terms for this specific purchase, including whether eligible disputes can be raised. No payment method guarantees recovery.

If you are selling

  • Confirm that funds have actually arrived by checking your bank account or payment platform directly. A screenshot or message is not proof of payment.
  • Do not ship goods, issue a refund or release inventory based only on a screenshot or a claim that payment is pending.
  • Do not pay anyone who says you must upgrade your Zelle account or raise a limit to receive money.

Chase warns that authorized payments sent to scammers can be difficult to recover. For more on choosing among payment methods, see Chase’s payment-choice guidance.
