India’s Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved ending Krishnamurthy V. Subramanian’s service as Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund with immediate effect on April 30, 2025. His three-year appointment, which began on November 1, 2022, was expected to run until November 2025, so he left about six months early. The government order quoted in news reports gave no reason for the decision.
What happened
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved termination of Subramanian’s appointment with immediate effect on April 30, 2025. Hindustan Times quoted the government notice as saying: “The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved termination of Dr Krishnamurthy Subramanian as Executive Director (India) at the International Monetary Fund with immediate effect.” Hindustan Times reported the notice’s wording.
The IMF’s 2025 annual report separately confirms the date. Its membership appendix states: “Krishnamurthy Subramanian relinquished his duties as Executive Director for Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and Sri Lanka, effective April 30, 2025.” The IMF annual report thus confirms that his duties ended on the same date as the ACC decision.
Why was he removed?
The government order, as quoted in the cited reporting, did not state a reason. The available official wording therefore establishes that the appointment was terminated, but does not explain why.

#1 Best Overall
The Indian Express and Economic Times reported alleged concerns, including about promotion of Subramanian’s book. Those accounts are media reporting, not an official explanation or proof of misconduct. Economic Times coverage also reported that Subramanian had criticized IMF data, including in an April 2024 post on X that the newspaper rendered as “IMF staff ’s error margins are HUGE”. The cited reporting does not establish that his criticism, book promotion, or any other specific matter caused the termination.
How the appointment timeline fits
- August 25, 2022: An ACC notification named Subramanian, then a professor of finance at the Indian School of Business and a former chief economic adviser, for a three-year appointment beginning November 1, 2022. The Indian Express reported the appointment and end date.
- November 1, 2022: His Executive Director appointment began.
- April 30, 2025: The ACC approved termination with immediate effect, and the IMF records that he relinquished his duties on that date.
- November 2025: The approximate scheduled end of the three-year appointment. The April departure was about six months ahead of that point.
Was he an IMF board nominee?
“Board nominee” is common shorthand, but his role was Executive Director. IMF Executive Directors represent constituencies of member countries; the IMF annual report lists Subramanian’s constituency as Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and Sri Lanka. He was not simply an individual nominee serving on behalf of India alone.
