ARK’s ARK Autonomous Technology & Robotics ETF (ARKQ) reportedly bought 30,217 Baidu shares on May 12, 2025, for an estimated $2.7 million. The trade came as the United States and China announced temporary tariff reductions, but the timing alone does not establish that the agreement caused the purchase.
What Baidu shares did Cathie Wood’s ARK fund buy?
Contemporaneous reporting said ARKQ bought 30,217 Baidu shares on May 12, 2025, worth approximately $2.7 million. Silin Chen reported the figures for TheStreet, and a second May 2025 report repeated them. The reported buyer was ARKQ, an exchange-traded fund managed by ARK Invest. The coverage does not say that Wood bought the shares in a personal account. Nor does it establish ARKQ’s resulting total Baidu position or the trade’s portfolio weight.
Why tariffs were part of the May 2025 story
The reports described a Geneva agreement that temporarily reduced US tariffs on Chinese goods from as high as 145% to 30% for three months, while China reduced duties on US imports from 125% to 10%. Those were the terms reported at the time; they describe a historical agreement, not current tariff policy. The purchase and the agreement occurred in the same news context, but the reporting does not establish a causal link between them.

How Baidu’s business entered the investment discussion
The coverage connected Baidu with search, large language models and autonomous mobility. It also quoted Wood discussing a recent conversation with Baidu co-founder Robin Li and his team, and describing the competitive environment for autonomous mobility and language models in China. Those remarks are context for the reported trade, not proof of ARKQ’s complete investment rationale or a current assessment of Baidu’s products.
As quoted in Chen’s report, Wood said: “We had a conversation very recently with Robin Li and his team and we understand how competitive the market is in China for both autonomous mobility and large language models. But we are looking at how Robin Li is pushing the envelope. Wuhan is the toughest in China. He can take learnings from that robotaxi experience into other markets.”
Wood also offered a forecast, not an independently established market-size figure: “We believe that autonomous mobility in the next 5 to 10 years is going to scale globally to an $8 to $10 trillion market. If Baidu were to get any of that market even outside of China in the rest of Asia, we think that’s not at all discounted in the stock,” she added. Both quotations are attributed to Wood as printed in Chen’s report.

The approximate value indicates the scale assigned to this single reported purchase, but it does not reveal the exact price paid per share, how the estimate was calculated, or how large Baidu was in ARKQ’s portfolio afterward. Without an original ARK transaction disclosure, the reporting cannot establish those details.
