The best crypto platform depends on what you need to do. Coinbase is the strongest all-around choice for most U.S. beginners, Kraken is better suited to active traders, Fidelity Crypto fits investors who already use Fidelity, and River is designed specifically for Bitcoin buyers who want recurring purchases.

There is no single “best” app for every investor. Some services are exchanges with order books, some are brokers that quote a spread, and others are payment apps with limited cryptocurrency support. The difference affects your trading costs, available coins, withdrawal options, tax records, and ability to move crypto to a private wallet.

This comparison focuses on U.S. retail users. Availability, fees, funding limits, supported coins, and transfer features can vary by state and may change after publication.

Best crypto exchanges and apps at a glance

Platform Best for What stands out Main limitation
Coinbase Most users and beginners Simple interface plus a separate advanced-trading platform The simple interface is not generally the cheapest way to trade
Kraken Active traders Published Kraken Pro maker/taker pricing and security disclosures Consumer-app and Pro pricing are different
Gemini Security-conscious users Regulated custody focus and multiple security certifications ActiveTrader fees can be high at low volume
Robinhood Crypto Investors who want stocks and crypto together Crypto is integrated with a stock-and-ETF account Routing, spreads, settlement, and transfer limitations require careful checking
Fidelity Crypto Existing Fidelity customers Crypto alongside traditional investments Only a small selection of cryptocurrencies
Crypto.com App Mobile users wanting a broad ecosystem Large asset selection, spending features, and rewards products Product availability varies by jurisdiction and product
Cash App Bitcoin Simple Bitcoin purchases and payments Easy buying, selling, recurring purchases, and Bitcoin transfers It is not a general-purpose altcoin exchange
River Bitcoin-only investors Recurring purchases, custody, and Bitcoin payment features Not designed for trading multiple cryptocurrencies
Uphold Converting between different assets Direct “anything-to-anything” conversions Quoted spreads can be higher than exchange fees
Bitstamp Users who prefer an established, focused exchange Volume-based trading structure and a relatively focused product Check the live retail schedule rather than relying on an old fee table

1. Coinbase: best overall crypto exchange

Coinbase is the best starting point for many U.S. investors because it combines a straightforward buying experience with a more capable platform for users who later want order books, limit orders, and lower volume-based trading fees.

#1 Best Overall
Ledger Nano S Plus - Classic Crypto Wallet
  • All your digital assets in one place. You can manage thousands of crypto including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Tether and more.
  • Defend your identity against hackers: secure your online accounts with passwordless, hardware backed, 2FA logins for all your favorite apps and websites.
  • Connectivity: USB-C cable connection only. No Bluetooth.Compatible with the Ledger Wallet crypto app, both desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux) and mobile (Android only). Not compatible with iOS.
  • Protect your digital assets with the industry's best security: keep your private keys offline in your private signer, battle-tested by the Donjon's white hat hackers, CC EAL 6+ certified Secure Element, constantly updated Ledger OS.
  • Effortlessly build your crypto portfolio via the all in one Ledger Wallet app: buy, sell, send, receive, swap, stake and more across popular blockchains. 15,000+ coins & tokens in a single dashboard. Keep a close eye on the market. Compare service providers. Track performance. Get timely alerts. Build your portfolio with confidence.

The standard Coinbase interface gives you a fixed-price quote. It is convenient, but convenience can be reflected in the spread and quoted transaction cost. Coinbase Advanced is a separate interface with an order book and maker/taker pricing based on trading volume. Investors should compare the final previewed cost rather than assume that the basic interface is the low-cost option.

Coinbase also supports crypto transfers to external wallets, subject to asset, network, account, and state restrictions. That makes it more flexible than apps intended mainly for price exposure. Before sending funds, confirm the receiving address, network, and any required memo or tag.

Best for: beginners who want a familiar app and a path to more advanced trading.

Watch out for: the difference between the simple quote-based interface and Coinbase Advanced. Review the current fee schedule after signing in because the applicable cost can depend on the payment method and account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Kraken: best for active traders

Kraken is a strong choice for investors who place trades regularly and are comfortable with a professional trading interface. Kraken Pro uses volume-based maker/taker pricing. The entry Pro tier is currently listed at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker, with rates declining as qualifying volume or assets on the platform increase.

Kraken’s current schedule uses the better of 30-day spot trading volume or assets held on the platform for determining the applicable tier. That can benefit users with either substantial balances or meaningful trading activity. A market order generally takes liquidity and is charged the taker rate; a resting limit order may qualify for maker pricing if it adds liquidity.

Kraken also publishes security information and a proof-of-reserves process. Proof of reserves should not be treated as a guarantee that an exchange has no liabilities or that customer funds cannot be lost. Kraken itself notes that there is no formally accepted universal standard for proof-of-reserves procedures.

Best for: active traders who understand order types and want transparent Pro fee tiers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch out for: Kraken Pro pricing does not automatically describe every transaction made in the consumer app. Funding, spreads, and withdrawals also affect the all-in cost.

3. Gemini: best for security-conscious users

Gemini emphasizes regulated custody and institutional-style security controls. The company says it is SOC 1 Type 2, SOC 2 Type 2, and ISO 27001 certified and conducts annual penetration testing.

Users who trade through ActiveTrader get an order-book interface and volume-based maker/taker fees. Gemini’s ActiveTrader schedule effective July 9, 2026 lists the lowest-volume spot tier at 0.60% maker and 1.20% taker. A partially matched order can incur both maker and taker fees, so the label attached to an order is not always the same from start to finish.

Gemini may appeal to investors who place greater weight on custody procedures and account security than on having the lowest headline trading fee. However, insurance descriptions must be read narrowly: security or custody coverage does not mean every asset, balance, or type of loss is universally insured.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: users who prioritize security controls and a regulated custody orientation.

Ledger Nano S Plus - Classic Crypto Wallet
  • All your digital assets in one place. You can manage thousands of crypto including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Tether and more.
  • Choose the colors that match your style: express your personality and your crypto management mood, color code your signers, one for each use (trading, staking, HOLDing...).

Watch out for: ActiveTrader’s low-volume fees and the scope of any insurance coverage.

4. Robinhood Crypto: best for a combined investment account

Robinhood Crypto is convenient for someone who already owns stocks and ETFs in Robinhood and wants crypto in the same app. It is a broker-style experience rather than a conventional exchange for every customer and order type.

Robinhood’s published crypto fee tiers range from 0.00% to 0.95% for eligible exchange-routed orders. In the app, open Account → Settings → Crypto → Fee tiers to see the applicable setting. Standard trades generally use market-maker routing. On web classic, orders use market-maker routing, while Robinhood Legend uses smart exchange routing. Maker/taker pricing is being rolled out and may not be available to all customers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Market and stop orders are charged the taker rate. Limit and stop-limit orders may receive maker or taker treatment depending on whether they execute immediately. The quoted spread and routing method can matter as much as the stated fee.

There is also a settlement issue after selling crypto. Robinhood may make sale proceeds available immediately for buying stocks, options, or more crypto, but withdrawing the money to a bank remains subject to ACH settlement, which can take up to five business days. Check Account → Transfers → Pending deposits for the status.

Best for: people who want a simple stock, ETF, and crypto dashboard.

Watch out for: “commission-free” claims, bank withdrawal timing, and whether you can transfer the specific asset and network you want.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Fidelity Crypto: best for existing Fidelity customers

Fidelity Crypto is a convenient option for customers who already manage retirement accounts, brokerage accounts, or cash at Fidelity. It is available through Fidelity.com and the Fidelity Investments app, so crypto can sit alongside a traditional portfolio.

The currently listed assets are Bitcoin, Ethereum, Fidelity Digital Dollar (FIDD), Litecoin, and Solana. Fidelity says crypto is held in cold-vaulted storage and monitored 24/7. The limited asset list may be an advantage for investors who want to avoid browsing hundreds of speculative tokens, but it makes Fidelity unsuitable for someone seeking a broad altcoin marketplace.

Eligibility requires being a U.S. citizen over 18 and living in a state where Fidelity Digital Assets serves customers. Review the available transfer and custody terms before opening an account; access to a familiar brokerage brand does not make crypto itself equivalent to a stock or mutual fund.

Best for: Fidelity customers who want a small number of major crypto assets in one financial ecosystem.

Watch out for: the five-asset selection and state eligibility.

6. Crypto.com App: best for a broad mobile ecosystem

The U.S. Crypto.com App advertises more than 400 cryptocurrencies, support for more than 20 fiat currencies, zero-fee USD deposits, a Visa Card, and rewards products. It is a broad mobile ecosystem rather than a narrowly focused trading venue.

Ledger Nano S Plus - Classic Crypto Wallet
  • All your digital assets in one place. You can manage thousands of crypto including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Tether and more.

  • Choose the colors that match your style: express your personality and your crypto management mood, color code your signers, one for each use (trading, staking, HOLDing...).

That breadth can be useful if you want to buy many assets, spend crypto, or explore additional products from one provider. It can also make fee comparisons more difficult. The quoted U.S. app page does not mean that every Crypto.com product, exchange feature, or international service is available to every U.S. customer. Banks and other payment providers may also charge their own fees.

Best for: mobile-first users who value asset variety and spending-related features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch out for: state and product availability, spreads, withdrawal charges, and the distinction between the U.S. App and the separate Exchange.

7. Cash App Bitcoin: best for simple Bitcoin use

Cash App is useful when the goal is straightforward Bitcoin buying, selling, payments, or recurring purchases rather than trading a basket of tokens. To buy, open the Bitcoin tab → Buy → enter the amount → confirm. The service supports on-chain and Lightning transfers.

Cash App’s Bitcoin product is not a general altcoin exchange. Its materials describe the product as designed for Bitcoin rather than memecoins or other risky tokens.

Published market-buy fees vary by transaction size:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Transaction size Published fee
$1–$499 2.0%
$500–$999 1.5%
$1,000–$1,999 0.9%
$2,000 or more 0%

Spreads may still apply, and fee-free treatment depends on the specific product. Cash App states that Bitcoin is a non-bank, non-deposit product and is not FDIC-insured merely because it appears in the app.

Best for: small Bitcoin purchases, payments, and recurring buys.

Watch out for: the fee schedule, spread, and lack of broad altcoin support.

8. River: best for Bitcoin-only dollar-cost averaging

River is built around Bitcoin rather than a long list of cryptocurrencies. Its tools focus on buying, custody, recurring purchases, direct deposit conversions, and Bitcoin payments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

River’s current fee schedule lists a 1.00% fee for one-time orders up to $1 million. Direct-deposit conversions and recurring buys can be fee-free after the applicable initial period: daily or hourly recurring buys become zero-fee from the eighth day onward, while weekly buys become zero-fee from the second order onward.

One operational detail matters for budgeting: River’s terms say recurring-order bank debits may occur up to one week before the scheduled purchase. Keep enough money in the linked bank account earlier than the displayed Bitcoin purchase date.

Bitcoin transfers cannot be reversed or canceled once completed or pending. River also says FDIC insurance may cover qualifying cash held at a partner bank, but that protection does not cover Bitcoin losses, theft, fraud, or River’s failure.

Best for: investors who want automated Bitcoin accumulation and do not need altcoins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch out for: early bank debits, one-time purchase fees, and irreversible transfers.

9. Uphold: best for asset-to-asset conversions

Uphold’s main differentiator is its “anything-to-anything” model, which lets users convert directly between supported assets and fiat currencies without necessarily routing through a separate base currency.

Uphold’s current U.S. schedule lists typical spreads of 1.8%–1.95% for Bitcoin and Ethereum, 2.55%–3.10% for altcoins, and less than 0.25% for most stablecoins, subject to conditions. Because the spread is built into the quoted price, a transaction can look fee-free while still being more expensive than a low-fee order-book trade.

The schedule also lists a $0.99 Uphold withdrawal fee for most crypto networks, in addition to applicable network fees. Supported assets and transfer networks must be checked before sending; an asset that can be bought or held may not necessarily be eligible for deposit or withdrawal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: users who prioritize quick conversions between different supported assets.

Watch out for: wider spreads during volatility or low liquidity and unsupported withdrawal networks.

10. Bitstamp: best for a focused exchange experience

Bitstamp may suit users who prefer an established exchange with a relatively focused product rather than a payments-and-rewards ecosystem. Its published VIP schedule shows volume-based maker/taker pricing, with standard pricing presented separately from high-volume VIP tiers.

Because retail fees can differ by country, trading pair, funding method, and product, do not rely on an old Bitstamp fee table. Check the live fee page and the final order preview for your U.S. account before comparing it with Coinbase, Kraken, or Gemini.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: users who want a more focused exchange and are willing to verify current pricing.

Watch out for: confusing a VIP schedule with the current retail fee for every U.S. pair or funding method.

How to choose a crypto exchange

1. Decide whether you need trading or simple exposure

If you only plan to buy Bitcoin or Ethereum occasionally, a simple broker or payment app may be adequate. If you want limit orders, charting, multiple order types, or lower fees at higher volume, look for a true advanced-trading interface.

2. Compare the all-in cost

Do not compare only the commission. The practical cost can include:

  • the trading fee;
  • the spread between the quoted buy and sell prices;
  • ACH, debit-card, or wire funding charges;
  • crypto withdrawal fees;
  • blockchain network fees; and
  • an unfavorable execution price on a market order.

A platform advertising zero commission may still make money through spread or routing. Review the preview screen for a specific trade and compare the amount of crypto received, not just the displayed fee.

3. Check withdrawals and self-custody

Some investors want to move crypto to a hardware wallet or another exchange. Confirm that the asset can be withdrawn, that the intended network is supported, and that any minimums or daily limits work for your planned transfer. A coin being listed for buying does not guarantee that deposits and withdrawals are enabled.

4. Review settlement and verification rules

New accounts, bank deposits, crypto transfers, and sales may trigger holds or additional identity verification. Robinhood says some crypto-transfer verification can take up to five business days, while ordinary incoming transfers can take several hours depending on confirmations and review. These delays matter if you need to move funds quickly.

5. Understand the tax records

Transferring crypto between wallets is different from selling it, but records can become incomplete when assets move between providers. Robinhood says it does not receive the original cost basis or acquisition date when crypto is transferred in. It initially estimates a zero cost basis and uses the received date until the user adds the correct information through View details → Add cost basis → Save → Done.

Important risks before opening an account

Crypto transfers cannot be casually undone

A wrong address, unsupported network, or missing memo/tag can permanently lose funds. Send a small test amount when practical, match the network on both sides, and never assume that two similarly named networks are interchangeable.

Crypto is not automatically FDIC-insured

Holding crypto in a banking or investing app does not turn the crypto into an FDIC-insured deposit. Cash held with a qualifying partner bank may have separate protection, but that is different from insurance against a decline in Bitcoin’s price, a stolen token, an exchange failure, or fraud.

State availability is not universal

Crypto products and supported assets differ by state. Confirm that the platform serves your state and that the exact coin, payment method, staking feature, and withdrawal network you want are available there.

A practical way to compare two platforms

  1. Choose the exact asset and trade size you expect to use.
  2. Record the quoted price and amount of crypto received on each platform.
  3. Add the trading fee, funding fee, and expected withdrawal charge.
  4. Check whether the asset can be sent to your intended wallet.
  5. Review the platform’s settlement, tax-document, and account-hold policies.

This approach is more useful than ranking apps by coin count. A platform with 400 assets is not automatically better than one with five if you only intend to buy Bitcoin and want reliable recurring purchases.

FAQ

What is the best crypto exchange for beginners?

Coinbase is the strongest general choice for beginners because it has a simple buying interface and a separate Coinbase Advanced platform for users who later want order-book trading. Compare the quoted spread and fee before placing a trade, since the basic interface is not generally the cheapest option.

Which crypto exchange has the lowest fees?

There is no universal winner. Kraken Pro publishes a 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker entry tier, but the cheapest platform for you depends on order type, trading volume, spread, funding method, and withdrawal cost. Compare the all-in amount of crypto received rather than the headline commission.

Are crypto exchanges and apps FDIC-insured?

Crypto itself is not FDIC-insured simply because it is held in a financial app. Qualifying cash at a partner bank may have separate FDIC protection, but that does not generally cover crypto price losses, theft, fraud, or an exchange’s failure.

Can I move crypto from an exchange to my own wallet?

Many platforms support external withdrawals, including Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, Cash App Bitcoin, and River, but support varies by asset, state, account status, and network. Verify the address, network, and memo or tag before sending because crypto transfers are generally irreversible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Coinbase is the best all-around choice for most U.S. beginners, while Kraken is more suitable for active traders comparing published Pro fees. Choose Fidelity Crypto if you already use Fidelity and only need a limited selection of major assets. Cash App Bitcoin and River are better for simple or automated Bitcoin investing, while Robinhood Crypto is convenient for an integrated stock-and-crypto account.

Whichever service you choose, compare the spread, trading fee, funding cost, withdrawal fee, supported network, and settlement time before depositing money. Treat crypto as a volatile asset, keep records of every transfer and sale, and do not assume that a financial app provides bank-deposit insurance for the crypto it displays.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
