The Tesla Model Y became the first pure-electric vehicle to top the annual global passenger-car sales ranking in 2023. JATO Dynamics’ final analysis, published on June 13, 2024, estimated approximately 1.22 million Model Y sales across 151 markets.
That is a significant milestone for electric vehicles, but it does not mean Tesla became the world’s best-selling automaker, or that the Model Y outsold every other car in every country. It was a full-year global comparison of vehicle models, based partly on market data and estimates.
What the 2023 ranking actually showed
JATO Dynamics ranked the Tesla Model Y ahead of the Toyota RAV4 and Toyota Corolla sedan for the full 2023 calendar year. Model Y sales were approximately 1.22 million, representing a 64% increase from 2022.

The distinction between “first EV” and “first pure-electric vehicle” matters. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles use electric motors but also have combustion engines. The Model Y is battery-electric, so it runs solely on electricity rather than petrol or diesel.

Why this matters to car buyers
A high global sales ranking does not automatically make the Model Y the cheapest or best choice for an individual household. It does, however, provide useful signals for prospective buyers.
More buyers can improve support and resale liquidity
A vehicle sold in large numbers is more likely to have a broad used-car market, independent repair knowledge, aftermarket parts and familiar insurance data. Those factors can make it easier to sell later than a niche electric vehicle.
They do not guarantee strong resale values. Tesla vehicles have experienced substantial price changes, and used prices can fall when the company reduces new-car prices or offers financing incentives. A buyer should compare the total cost over the intended ownership period instead of assuming that popularity protects resale value.
Charging access still matters more than the sales ranking

- Whether home parking allows a charger to be installed.
- Whether the electrical panel can support the required circuit.
- The local electricity rate and any time-of-use pricing.
- The price and availability of public fast charging along regular routes.
- Whether apartment, workplace or street-parking rules make charging difficult.
For someone who can charge at home, the running-cost calculation may be attractive. For someone dependent on public fast chargers, the financial advantage over a petrol vehicle can be smaller, particularly where fast-charging prices are high.
Insurance and depreciation can outweigh energy savings
Electricity is only one part of ownership cost. Insurance premiums, registration fees, tires, financing interest, repairs and depreciation can have a larger effect on the monthly budget.
A simple comparison is:
Monthly ownership cost = finance payment + insurance + registration and taxes + charging or fuel + maintenance + expected depreciation.
Compare that figure with an alternative over the same term and annual mileage. Do not compare only the advertised monthly payment: a longer loan can reduce the payment while increasing total interest and leaving the borrower owing more than the car is worth.

Why the headline needs a date
The defensible claim is specifically about 2023. It should not be rewritten as “the Model Y is permanently the world’s best-selling car.” Rankings change, and different research companies use different market coverage and estimation methods.
For 2024, a JATO-based ranking reported by Kelley Blue Book placed the Toyota RAV4 first, including the Toyota Wildlander nameplate in some markets, with the Model Y fewer than 3,000 units behind. Tesla’s 2024 Form 10-K, however, claimed that the Model Y was the best-selling vehicle of any kind globally for the full year. Those are competing claims and should not be presented as a settled result.
The 2025 result is also source-dependent. Focus2Move ranked the Model Y first, while BestSellingCarsBlog’s compilation of 108 markets ranked the Toyota RAV4 first and the Model Y second. In March 2026, Tesla claimed that the Model Y led global passenger-car sales in 2023, 2024 and 2025, citing JATO Dynamics, Statista and Focus2Move. That remains a corporate claim in a landscape where independent rankings do not agree for every year.
Why different rankings can disagree
There is no single worldwide government database recording every vehicle sale under one consistent model name. Analysts may have to combine registration data, manufacturer information, industry estimates and forecasts.

Results can differ because of:
- Market coverage: one study may include more countries than another.
- Nameplate treatment: the Toyota RAV4 and Wildlander may be combined or counted separately.
- Sales versus registrations: databases may measure deliveries, registrations or estimated retail sales.
- Timing: preliminary estimates can change when late market data arrives.

JATO’s preliminary January 2024 release estimated 1.23 million Model Y sales for 2023. Its final report later gave approximately 1.22 million. The change illustrates why a preliminary headline should not be treated as the final number.
Do Tesla’s official delivery figures prove the Model Y total?
Not by themselves. Tesla’s standard delivery releases group the Model 3 and Model Y together as “Model 3/Y.” Tesla does not publish a complete worldwide annual Model Y-only delivery table in those releases.
Consequently, Model Y-specific global totals generally come from external market databases, estimates or Tesla statements. A person evaluating Tesla’s business should distinguish between:
- Tesla’s reported combined Model 3/Y deliveries;
- an analyst’s estimated Model Y sales;
- a registration-based ranking; and
- a claim made by Tesla in a regulatory filing or public statement.
What the milestone does not prove
The 2023 result does not prove that:
- the Model Y was the best-selling vehicle in every country;
- every Model Y owner saves money compared with a petrol car;
- Tesla was the world’s best-selling car manufacturer;
- the Model Y will retain the title in every later year; or
- the Model Y has the lowest total cost of ownership in every market.
For a household deciding whether to buy one, the useful question is narrower: does this particular Model Y, at this particular price, fit the buyer’s driving, charging, insurance and financing situation?
