Common Mistakes to Avoid When Taking Prop Firm Challenges

A practical, rules-first guide to prop firm challenges: check your exact account terms, understand loss calculations and drawdown, and avoid conduct that can invalidate a pass.

The most avoidable challenge failures start with trading a rule you have not checked: a daily-loss calculation based on equity, a separate trailing drawdown, a consistency target, or a restriction on how you trade. Prop-firm challenge terms vary by provider, account type, and phase. Before placing a trade, identify the exact rules for your account and build a plan that stays comfortably inside them.

What are the common mistakes to avoid when taking a prop firm challenge?

There is no single rulebook for retail prop-firm evaluations. A provider may offer different objectives and breach consequences across programs or stages. FTMO describes different loss objectives for its 1-Step and 2-Step programs, while Topstep distinguishes conditions by account stage. Use the live rules page and your account dashboard for the exact program, phase, instrument, and trading-day definition you have—not an old screenshot or another trader’s summary. See FTMO’s objectives and Topstep’s program overview.

Before starting, write down the items that determine whether you can continue or pass:

  • Profit target and number of phases.
  • Daily loss limit and the field it uses—balance, equity, or another measure.
  • Maximum loss or drawdown method, reference point, and whether the floor can move.
  • Reset time and the provider’s definition of a trading day.
  • Minimum trading days and any consistency or best-day condition.
  • Allowed instruments, trading hours, and rules for news, overnight, or weekend positions.
  • Restrictions on automation, copied trades, account coordination, or other conduct.
  • What happens when a limit is reached: a session lock, account failure, or another consequence.

Why can a challenge fail even if you are profitable?

A positive total result does not necessarily satisfy every condition. You may breach a loss threshold before a winning trade closes, exceed a consistency cap, or violate a trading-conduct rule. Treat the profit target as one objective among several, not proof that the account is compliant.

Equity can breach a limit before you close a losing trade

On FTMO’s cited non-futures objectives page, Maximum Daily Loss is calculated using equity: balance plus open-position profit or loss, with swaps and commissions included. The page describes a 1-Step daily threshold of 3% of Initial Simulated Capital, recalculated at 00:00 CE(S)T using that day’s recorded balance, and a 2-Step threshold of 5% of Initial Simulated Capital. These are FTMO-specific terms, not universal challenge limits. A floating loss or trading costs can therefore matter before a position is closed. Follow the equity figure and calculation your own provider specifies. FTMO objectives.

Daily loss and maximum loss are different controls

A daily limit governs losses over a provider-defined day; a maximum-loss rule sets a broader account floor. Their calculations can differ. FTMO’s cited 2-Step description pairs its daily-loss calculation with a static maximum-loss amount of 10%. Its 1-Step description instead uses an end-of-day trailing maximum-loss limit. FTMO Futures plans also describe a trailing limit based on a preceding high balance that can rise but not fall. Do not assume a rule described as “drawdown” is static—or that it resets with the daily limit. FTMO objectives; FTMO Futures rules.

A consistency rule can require more profit after a strong day

Some programs assess how much of the total profit came from the best day. In the cited FTMO Futures plan, the Best Day must be no more than 40% of total profit to pass. The page gives an example: $2,000 on the best day and $1,000 on another day makes the best day 66.7% of $3,000 total profit. If the $2,000 day remains the best, total profit would need to reach $5,000 for it to represent 40%. Exceeding the share is not itself a breach under that description, but more profit is needed to meet the condition. Check your own plan’s definition of “day,” profit, and consistency calculation. FTMO Futures rules.

How should you manage loss limits and drawdown?

Leave room below the breach line

A hard limit is a boundary, not a trading target. Set a personal buffer inside the actual provider limits to account for open-position movement, commissions, swaps where applicable, slippage, and correlated positions that may lose together. There is no tested universal buffer or risk percentage in the cited rules; choose a plan that fits your own method and the account’s mechanics.

  • BUILT FOR YOUR MARKET, FUTURES, STOCKS, FOREX, OPTIONS & CRYPTO: 4X is a mindset and process journal, not a strategy tool tied to one instrument. The plan, the trade log, the deep dive and the weekly review work the same whether you trade ES, EURUSD, SPY or BTC. Traders use it across all five markets every day.
  • THE 2026 EDITION, REBUILT FROM TRADER FEEDBACK: Same trusted system, better in every way. An extra daily page for more room to log the session. That review habit is the edge. You're 42% more likely to hit a goal you've written down.
  • BUILT TO LAST, ARRIVES GIFT-READY: Vegan-leather hardcover, 100gsm bleed-resistant paper, two ribbon markers and an elastic closure band. Bound to lay flat so you're not fighting the spine while you write. 189 pages, 5.75" x 8.5", carries in a bag. Ships in a premium gift box: the gift every trader in your life actually wants.

Use a prewritten size and stop rule

Increasing position size to recover a loss or reach the target faster can move equity toward a limit more quickly. FTMO Futures warns against overleveraging and one-sided bets. Set position size and a stopping point before trading, then stop when your plan says to stop rather than escalating risk to force a result. FTMO’s forbidden trading practices.

Know what a breach does to your account

Consequences are program-specific. FTMO Futures distinguishes soft violations—which, in the described circumstances, close positions and suspend trading for the session—from hard violations that fail the account. Topstep’s overview says a Daily Loss Limit breach in a Live Funded Account deactivates trading for that day. Check the consequence for your own account before you trade. Which strategies or tools might violate the rules?

Passing a numerical target does not excuse prohibited conduct. Rules can cover who makes trade decisions, how accounts interact, what automation does, and whether positions or orders may remain open outside allowed hours. The examples below are provider-specific, not universal prohibitions.

  • Copied decisions: FTMO Futures prohibits incorporating another trader’s decisions, including through signal services or trade copiers.
  • Automation: FTMO Futures bars automated systems that manipulate or provide an unfair advantage. FTMO also states that traders are responsible for activity generated by their automated systems, including errors and malfunctions.
  • Trading near daily price limits or outside permitted hours: FTMO Futures prohibits opening new positions within 2% of the CME-defined daily price limit and prohibits carrying positions or resting orders beyond the permitted trading day.
  • Account stacking or intentional depletion: Topstep’s June 10, 2026 prohibited-strategies article identifies account stacking—repeatedly trading aggressively, hitting the Maximum Loss Limit in one account, then switching to another and repeating—as prohibited. It also identifies intentionally depleting a Live Funded Account as prohibited.

Read the current conduct policy before using a copier, automation, account-sharing arrangement, or multi-account approach. FTMO advises: “If you have any doubt about whether a strategy is permitted, contact us before trading.” FTMO policy; Topstep prohibited strategies.

How can a journal help you follow the rules?

Keep a record of daily closed results, positions, and whether each trade followed your plan. This can help you review day-level consistency and spot patterns such as trading after your planned stopping point. A trading journal for day traders is a record-keeping aid, not proof of compliance and not a substitute for the firm’s dashboard or current terms.

How should you compare challenge programs?

Compare mechanics that affect your strategy and account survival, rather than choosing on headline target alone. Fill this table from the current terms for each specific program; if a detail is not stated, ask the provider instead of assuming.

Rule area What to verify
Daily loss Amount, balance or equity basis, treatment of open P/L and costs, reset time, and whether a breach suspends trading or fails the account.
Maximum loss Static, intraday trailing, or end-of-day trailing; reference point; whether the floor can move back down; and breach consequence.
Passing objectives Target, phases, minimum days, and any consistency or best-day formula.
Trading constraints Permitted products, news and overnight/weekend holding, trading-day boundary, automation, copying, and account coordination.
Operational terms Current fees, reset rules, subscription behavior, and support terms, as stated by the provider for the relevant program.

No overall “best firm” follows from these rule differences alone: the fit depends on your market, strategy, location, account type, and tolerance for the rules’ mechanics.
