That was a registered-membership milestone—not a count of 200 million people playing at the same time or a measure of daily active users. The company later reported 243M+ members at the end of 2025 and announced 250 million members in February 2026.
When did Chess.com reach 200 million members?
TechCrunch reported the milestone on April 24, 2025, describing Chess.com as having surpassed 200 million members. The company had been founded in 2005 and launched in 2007, according to the report.
The 200-million figure is now a dated milestone rather than the latest membership count. Chess.com said it reached 100 million members in December 2022 and announced 250 million in February 2026. Its retrospective account says it added an average of almost 12 million members a year as it entered its third decade; that is the company’s characterization, not an independently audited growth measure. Chess.com’s February 2026 announcement provides that history.
How many people play on Chess.com each day?
The 200-million headline does not answer how many people use the site on a typical day. In its report on the milestone, TechCrunch cited more than 20 million chess games played daily and 1.5 million paying users. Games are not people: one player can play multiple games, and those April 2025 figures should not be treated as current daily activity or current paid membership.

Chess.com’s Q4 2025 board report gives a different, more directly activity-focused metric: an average of 8.7 million daily active users during that quarter. It also reports 13.5 million registrations in Q4 2025 and 2.5 billion total games for that quarter. These measures cover distinct things and periods; registrations are not active users, and games are not unique players. The figures are company-reported rather than independent estimates. Chess.com’s Q4 2025 Board Report includes the period metrics.
What does “200 million members” count?
It is a membership figure as reported by Chess.com and TechCrunch, not an established count of distinct living people. The sources reviewed do not explain how duplicate, inactive, or abandoned accounts are handled, and they do not provide an independently audited total of unique human users. It would therefore be inaccurate to translate the milestone into “200 million people actively play chess online.”

The later 243M+ figure is in Chess.com’s Q4 2025 Board Report, which specifies that it is as of December 31, 2025. The company’s 250-million announcement followed on February 27, 2026.
What does the platform offer—and what was behind its growth?
TechCrunch described Chess.com as offering games against other people or bots, daily games, puzzles, chess news, and streaming of competitions. It reported that most new users were beginners and quoted Chief Growth Officer Albert Cheng saying around 85% of new registrations came from outside the U.S. Those are claims in the April 2025 report, not current audited platform demographics.

The same report linked Chess.com’s growth to product innovation and rising interest in chess, including pandemic-era online entertainment and the popularity of The Queen’s Gambit in 2020. These are reported explanations, not a measured breakdown of how much each factor contributed. Cheng told TechCrunch: “It’s been played for over 1,500 years, which is just amazing. And even Chess.com is not a brand new company. It’s been around for almost 20 years. It feels really dynamic.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the milestone matters to readers
For a reader evaluating Chess.com as a service, membership scale shows the reach of the platform but does not by itself establish how many opponents will be online at a given moment, the quality of play, or whether a paid plan is worthwhile. Those questions require evidence about current activity, features, and pricing—not a historical registration milestone. The clearest scale comparison is to keep each count attached to its measure and date: member accounts, paid users, active users, and games are not interchangeable.
