Character.AI named Karandeep Anand its CEO on June 20, 2025, drawing on his experience at Meta, Brex and Microsoft. That appointment is no longer the latest leadership news: Character.AI announced on September 18, 2026, that Anand was joining Disney as its chief technology officer, effective October 2. The announcements reviewed here do not identify his successor at Character.AI.
Who is Karandeep Anand?
Anand joined Character.AI as CEO after serving as an adviser to its board for nine months, according to the company’s June 20, 2025 announcement. Immediately before the appointment, he was President of Brex. Earlier, he led Business Products at Meta and held executive roles at Microsoft.
Those roles made him an experienced technology and business-products executive, but the appointment announcement did not disclose financial terms, compensation or a performance target for his tenure.
What did Character.AI say its new CEO would focus on?
Character.AI said Anand would advance its long-term strategy, develop multimodal AI technology and expand the user community. In a letter to users, he identified several near-term product priorities:

- Improving character memory and model quality.
- Adjusting content filters.
- Improving character search and discovery.
- Making it easier to organize characters.
- Providing more transparency around character creation.
Anand framed these as intended improvements, not a guarantee that each would ship within a particular timeframe. His letter said, “We’re going to move fast to give you a bunch of the things you’ve been asking for.”
What changes did Character.AI later report?
In an August 22, 2025 update, Character.AI said it had begun rolling out open-source models fine-tuned with its technology, including PipSqueak. The company also reported filter adjustments, mobile search filters, character archiving and “Restricted Access” labels for some characters.
These are company-reported product changes. They do not, by themselves, establish independent assessments of model quality or safety, or measured outcomes for users.
Why is Anand leaving Character.AI?
On September 18, 2026, Character.AI announced that Anand was joining Disney in a newly created role, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. Disney’s announcement said the role would take effect October 2, 2026, and that Anand would oversee enterprise technology, infrastructure, data and AI platforms, product and engineering. Neither announcement gives a reason for his departure beyond describing the new role and transition.

Disney’s biography described Anand as Character.AI’s former CEO, Brex’s former President and Chief Product Officer, and Meta’s former Vice President of Ads & Business Products. It also said he spent 15 years at Microsoft in product and engineering leadership roles and worked on Azure. These career details are from Disney’s account.
Who is replacing Anand at Character.AI?
The official announcements cited above do not name a successor. Character.AI said its app remained live and online and that it would share more information, but that statement did not specify who would lead the company. The identity of Anand’s successor is therefore unconfirmed in those announcements; they are not evidence that the company has no successor.

What the leadership change means for users
The available company updates connect Anand’s initial appointment to product priorities and later reported releases, but they do not provide an independently verified measure of his tenure or establish that he personally caused each change. His move to Disney is a separate leadership development, and the sources reviewed do not say whether Character.AI’s announced product direction will change under a successor.
