Boeing recommended on November 7, 2025, that the three operators of its MD-11 Freighter suspend flights while the company conducted additional engineering analysis. The recommendation followed the November 4 crash of UPS Flight 2976. The next day, the FAA issued an emergency directive that prohibited MD-11 and MD-11F flights until operators completed required inspections and applicable corrective actions. These were separate actions: Boeing made the recommendation; the FAA imposed the enforceable restriction.
Why did Boeing recommend suspending MD-11F flights?
The recommendation followed the crash of UPS Flight 2976, an MD-11F that was destroyed after striking the ground shortly after takeoff from Louisville on November 4, 2025. The FAA’s directive says the aircraft’s left-hand engine and pylon detached during takeoff. The agency said the accident’s cause was under investigation; the cited information does not establish a final cause. The NTSB investigation page identifies the aircraft as an MD-11F.
On November 7, Boeing said it recommended that the three MD-11 Freighter operators suspend flight operations while additional engineering analysis was performed. Boeing described the recommendation as a safety measure, not as a regulatory order. Boeing’s November 7 statement records the recommendation.
Did the FAA ground the MD-11?
Yes. On November 8, 2025, the FAA issued an emergency airworthiness directive (AD) prohibiting operators from flying MD-11 and MD-11F aircraft until they completed specified inspections and any necessary corrective actions using an FAA-approved method. Unlike Boeing’s recommendation, the FAA directive was a binding flight restriction. At the time, the FAA said it applied to approximately 109 U.S.-registered aircraft; that was the agency’s dated U.S. estimate, not a current worldwide fleet total. The FAA’s announcement describes the initial directive.

Boeing said on November 8 that it supported the FAA’s directive. The manufacturer’s support did not replace or create the legal restriction; the FAA’s AD did that. Boeing’s follow-up statement documents its response.

Can MD-11 aircraft fly again?
FedEx’s May 2026 filing establishes that its aircraft began returning to commercial service after FAA approval of inspection and return-to-service protocols. It does not establish the status of every aircraft or operator as of October 8, 2026. UPS, by contrast, announced that it had retired its MD-11 fleet. Those company decisions do not determine the status of the entire global fleet or change the need to comply with applicable FAA requirements.

The FAA’s November 24 action also matters to operators of related aircraft: it extended the directive to specified MD-10 and DC-10 models because of similar engine-pylon structure.
