Online casino gaming and sports betting grew faster than land-based casino gaming in the latest U.S. commercial figures, but traditional casinos still generated the largest share of revenue. The numbers vary by country and by what each source counts: “casino industry” may include online casinos, sports betting and tribal gaming, while reported gross gaming revenue (GGR) or gross gambling yield (GGY) is operator revenue—not the total amount wagered, customer spending or profit.
What are the latest casino industry trends?
The clearest pattern in the reported markets is faster growth in digital gaming than in land-based activity. That does not mean digital is the largest segment everywhere: in the United States, traditional casino games still had the biggest revenue base in 2025. Growth rates also reflect different laws, reporting periods and categories, so they are not a single comparable global trend line.
United States: commercial gaming reached a new high
The American Gaming Association’s State of the States 2026, published May 12, 2026, reports $78.62 billion in U.S. commercial gaming revenue for calendar 2025, up 9.1% from 2024. It says 34 of 38 commercial gaming jurisdictions set annual revenue records. The reported commercial total includes casino gaming, sports betting and iGaming; it is not a measure of all U.S. gambling, because tribal gaming is counted separately.
Great Britain: remote activity grew faster than land-based sectors
The Gambling Commission reported £17.5 billion in customer-facing gambling GGY in Great Britain for the financial year from April 2025 through March 2026, up 4.4%. Excluding reported lotteries, the total was £13.2 billion, up 4.7%. Remote casino, betting and bingo together generated £8.3 billion, up 6.9%, while land-based sectors generated £4.9 billion, up 1.1%. These are GGY figures for the Commission’s licensed and regulated operators, not U.S.-style commercial gaming revenue.

Philippines: electronic and online gaming led growth
The Philippine regulator PAGCOR reported 2025 gaming GGR of Php396.14 billion, up 6.39%. Its electronic and online gaming category generated Php201.12 billion, up 30.04%; PAGCOR says this category includes E-Bingo, E-Games, Bingo Grantees, and onsite and offsite poker. Licensed casinos generated Php182.50 billion, down 9.58%. The figures show different directions within one national market, not a universal shift away from land-based casinos.
How do casino, online and sports betting revenues compare?
The table keeps the source, geography, period and metric attached to each figure. Growth is year over year as reported by the named publisher. U.S. figures below are from AGA’s later State of the States 2026 page; a separate AGA release gave a slightly different snapshot, shown afterward.

A separate U.S. 2025 snapshot differs slightly
AGA’s February 26, 2026 release reported $78.72 billion in U.S. commercial gaming GGR for 2025, up 9.2%, rather than the $78.62 billion total on its later State of the States 2026 page. The February release also reported $50.94 billion from traditional gaming (+2.3%), $16.96 billion from sports betting (+22.8%), $10.74 billion from iGaming (+27.6%) and $18.09 billion in gaming taxes (+15.1%). The later page reports $17.86 billion in direct gaming taxes. These are separate AGA publications; their totals and tax figures should not be blended into a single series.
What do the growth rates mean?
Fast growth is not the same as the largest market
In AGA’s U.S. commercial figures, traditional casino games generated $51.06 billion in 2025, substantially more than either sports betting or iGaming, even though the latter channels grew faster year over year. A high percentage increase can come from a smaller starting base; it does not by itself show that a segment is larger, more profitable or more durable.

Revenue measures are not wagers or profit
GGR and GGY are operator revenue measures. They should not be read as total bets placed, customer losses across all spending categories, net income after operating costs, or tax receipts. The reported totals also differ in what activities they include: the U.S. AGA figures cover commercial gaming, while Great Britain’s figures use the Gambling Commission’s GGY categories and Philippine figures use PAGCOR’s GGR categories.
These figures do not establish a global market size or forecast
The U.S., Great Britain and Philippine figures cover different currencies, calendar or financial years, legal frameworks and activity categories. They demonstrate channel shifts within those reported markets; they cannot be added or directly ranked as if they were one harmonized global series. The figures cited here do not establish a global market valuation or forecast.

How regulation is shaping online gaming
Regulation affects which products may be offered, how operators are counted and whether customers can access payment channels. The AGA, an industry association, reports that authorities in 16 U.S. states acted during 2025 against prediction-market platforms offering sports outcome contracts, and that five states passed laws explicitly prohibiting sweepstakes platforms that mimic online casinos or sportsbooks. Those are AGA’s reports and policy framing, not a neutral tally issued here by a regulator.
PAGCOR’s reporting also points to payment infrastructure as an operational factor: changes to payment channels can affect online access in the short term. The available figures do not quantify the effect on revenue, so payment changes should be understood as a possible access constraint rather than a measured explanation for a particular growth rate.

Where tribal gaming fits in the U.S. picture
AGA’s commercial totals do not include all tribal gaming. In particular, its 2025 commercial sports-betting revenue excludes tribal casino sportsbooks and Florida mobile sports betting, which it classifies as tribal gaming. The National Indian Gaming Commission lists a fiscal-year 2025 report of tribal GGR by region, dated July 21, 2026, but no verified tribal revenue total is quoted here. As a result, the $78.62 billion AGA figure should not be described as the size of the entire U.S. gaming industry.
