Caroline Ellison received a 24-month federal prison sentence because her extensive cooperation did not erase her own central role in the FTX fraud. She pleaded guilty, admitted participating in schemes that defrauded customers and investors, and gave prosecutors key evidence against Sam Bankman-Fried. Judge Lewis Kaplan credited her cooperation but concluded that the seriousness of the offenses still warranted prison.
What did Caroline Ellison do at FTX and Alameda?
Ellison was chief executive of Alameda Research, the trading firm associated with Sam Bankman-Fried and FTX. The criminal case concerned schemes to defraud FTX customers and investors, along with related misconduct. Ellison pleaded guilty in December 2022; the Associated Press reported that she admitted guilt on seven charges. The Justice Department described the charges as arising from schemes to defraud customers and investors and related crimes. The DOJ announcement summarizes her plea and the case.
Her cooperation did not make her a bystander. In its September 17, 2024 sentencing memorandum, prosecutors said Ellison had played a “core role” in Bankman-Fried’s criminal schemes, while also disclosing her own misconduct and explaining how she helped advance and conceal the scheme. The U.S. Attorney’s Office described her testimony as “a cornerstone of the trial against Bankman-Fried.”
Why did the judge impose two years in prison?
On September 24, 2024, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan sentenced Ellison to 24 months in prison. Her lawyers had asked for no prison term, and the defense filing said the Probation Department recommended time served followed by three years of supervised release. Neither was the sentence Kaplan imposed. Contemporary coverage said the judge weighed her extensive cooperation against the seriousness of the fraud and found incarceration necessary. The Guardian reported Kaplan saying, “I’ve seen a lot of cooperators in 30 years. I’ve never seen one quite like Ms Ellison,” while still imposing prison time. The defense sentencing filing records the defense request and Probation recommendation.

The distinction matters: cooperation can affect how a court evaluates a defendant, but it is not immunity. In Ellison’s case, prosecutors emphasized the value of her assistance and her admission of wrongdoing; the court nevertheless imposed a custodial sentence for her own conduct.
How did Ellison help convict Sam Bankman-Fried?
Ellison testified for the government at Bankman-Fried’s trial and described her own role in the fraud and its concealment. Prosecutors called her evidence central to their case. Her account helped the jury understand the relationship between Alameda and FTX and the conduct at issue. Bankman-Fried was convicted at trial and received a 25-year sentence, according to the Associated Press. The AP’s sentencing coverage reports both Ellison’s sentence and the comparison with Bankman-Fried.
Has Caroline Ellison been released from prison?
The Associated Press reported that Ellison began serving her 24-month sentence on November 7, 2024, at a federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut. AP’s report covered the start of her sentence.
In a report dated January 22, 2026, The Guardian said Ellison had been released from federal custody after serving about 14 months, following a transfer to community confinement the previous October. That is a custody update, not a change to the 24-month sentence imposed in 2024. The Guardian’s January 2026 report is the source for the release and time-served estimate.

What happened after the criminal sentence?
The criminal sentence and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s civil enforcement case are separate proceedings. On August 19, 2026, the CFTC announced that a federal court had entered supplemental consent orders against Ellison and former FTX executive Gary Wang. Ellison’s order requires continued cooperation and imposes a five-year trading ban and a 10-year registration ban. The CFTC says both periods run from entry of the initial consent orders. The CFTC announcement gives the terms and context.
The regulator also said its initial order of December 23, 2022 found Ellison liable on both fraud counts in the amended complaint and permanently enjoined her from violating the relevant anti-fraud provisions. The CFTC said it was not seeking restitution, disgorgement, or civil monetary penalties at that time, citing, in part, her cooperation and an $11.020 billion forfeiture order in the parallel criminal actions. That figure is the amount of the forfeiture order identified by the CFTC; it does not establish how much has been collected or distributed to victims.
