Cargill’s Eddyville, Iowa plant makes QIRA, a bio-based version of the industrial chemical 1,4-butanediol (BDO). It does not manufacture finished clothing, packaging or other consumer goods: QIRA is an ingredient that other manufacturers can use in materials and products. The plant, operated by Qore—a joint venture of Cargill and Germany’s HELM AG—began operations in July 2025.

What the Eddyville plant produces

QIRA is Qore’s brand of bio-based BDO, a chemical building block used to make polymers and other industrial materials. BDO can be used in applications including performance textiles, engineered plastics, biodegradable packaging and other compounds. Those are potential uses of the chemical, not confirmation that every product in those categories contains QIRA.

The distinction matters when assessing the announcement: this is a new source of an industrial input, not a launch of a particular consumer product. Qore operates the plant and markets its output; Cargill and HELM own the joint venture. Geno licensed Qore the process technology used at the facility.

How QIRA is made

The plant uses Geno’s proprietary biocatalyst and a single-step fermentation process to make BDO from plant sugars. Geno describes the feedstocks as traceable, responsibly sourced and renewable, replacing fossil-fuel-based inputs in its process. The facility is in Eddyville, Iowa, and the reported agricultural feedstock is corn.

365 by Whole Foods Market, Organic Canola Cooking Oil, 16 Fl Oz
  • 16 fl oz organic canola oil extracted without chemicals or solvents
  • Sodium-free cooking oil suitable for high heat up to 450°F
  • Neutral taste perfect for baking, sautéing, and grilling
  • Ideal for marinades and salad dressings
  • Light texture suitable for various cooking applications

Coverage by Iowa Capital Dispatch, republished by Successful Farming, said the area-grown corn supply is associated with practices such as cover cropping and reduced tillage. That description does not amount to an independent audit of sourcing or a complete account of the farm-level criteria.

Investment, capacity and corn demand

The Eddyville project represented a reported $300 million investment. Iowa Capital Dispatch reported stated full-capacity figures of 66,000 metric tons of QIRA per year and demand for 100 million bushels of corn per year. These figures describe the plant at full capacity; they are not reported actual production or current corn purchases.

  • Use it for cooking, frying, or baking, or in dressings and marinades
  • 0g Trans Fat Per Serving
  • Canola Oil Is a Cholesterol Free Food With 14g Of Total Fat Per Serving

Geno said the global BDO market exceeded three million tons in 2024 and projected it would surpass four million tons by 2030. Those are Geno’s market estimates and forecast, rather than independently verified figures in the cited coverage.

What the environmental claim does—and does not—show

Geno says its process is expected to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions from BDO production by up to 90% compared with traditional fossil-based BDO. That is a company claim, and the “up to” figure is not an independently established result for the Eddyville plant. The cited materials do not provide a complete comparative life-cycle assessment of the facility or its products.

Using plant-based feedstock instead of fossil-based inputs is a meaningful difference in the production pathway, but plant origin alone does not establish the full environmental impact. A broader comparison would need to account for factors such as agricultural inputs, processing, energy, transport and the selected fossil-based comparator.

What happens next for manufacturers and consumers

BDO is used upstream, so manufacturers—not shoppers—are the immediate audience for QIRA. The Iowa Capital Dispatch report identified LYCRA Company as an early Qore partner. Qore CEO Jon Veldhouse discussed possible applications in fashion, footwear, personal care, electronics and automotive, while Geno’s announcement named textiles, engineered plastics and packaging. The sources identify applications and a partnership, but do not establish a verified catalog of retail products containing QIRA.

For manufacturers, the practical questions are whether QIRA is available in the required volumes, works with existing production specifications and can be sourced at an acceptable delivered cost. The cited announcements do not provide comparative cost, product-by-product compatibility data or broad supply-availability details. For consumers, the plant’s opening alone is not evidence that a particular item on a shelf uses QIRA.
