Indigo’s 2025 Carbon Milestone: Nearly 1 Million Credits, but Not 1 Million Tons of Removals

Indigo’s April 2025 near-million milestone referred to credits issued; its separate reported impact combined sequestration and abatement. The company reported a later total in 2026.

Indigo’s April 16, 2025 announcement put its U.S. cropland carbon program near a million credits issued, but its reported cumulative impact was a different figure: 927,000 metric tons of CO₂e sequestered or abated since 2018 across 28 states. Those terms are not interchangeable. Indigo later reported a larger total in February 2026, so the near-million milestone is a dated snapshot, not the company’s latest reported result.

What Indigo’s April 2025 milestone actually counted

Indigo said its fourth U.S. carbon crop had generated more than 500,000 independently verified credits issued through the Climate Action Reserve. Across four harvests, the company said it had issued nearly one million credits. Separately, it reported that its Carbon program had sequestered or abated 927,000 metric tons of CO₂e since 2018 across 28 U.S. states. These are Indigo’s reported figures, not an independent audit of every aggregate program claim. Indigo’s April 16, 2025 announcement

A carbon credit is a unit issued under a program for a quantified climate benefit; issuance is not the same statement as a measured total of carbon removed from the atmosphere. Indigo’s 927,000-ton figure combined sequestration and abatement, so it should not be described as 927,000 tons of removals alone—or rounded into a claim that one million tons had been removed.

What changed after the 2025 announcement

On February 25, 2026, Indigo reported more than two million metric tons of removals and reductions across U.S. croplands, including 1.1 million independently verified credits in its fifth U.S. carbon crop. That is a later, company-reported total with broader combined language (“removals and reductions”); it does not revise what Indigo said on April 16, 2025. Indigo’s February 25, 2026 announcement

How soil carbon sequestration works

Plants take in carbon dioxide through photosynthesis. Carbon becomes part of leaves, stems, and roots; some is released through roots and used by soil organisms. Microbes consume and transform organic material, helping move carbon into soil. The amount retained depends on the farming practices, soils, and other conditions involved, which is why credit programs need a method for estimating changes rather than assuming every practice stores the same amount.

Indigo’s 2025 white paper describes practices associated with building soil organic carbon: minimizing soil disturbance, keeping soil covered, maintaining living plants or roots, and increasing plant diversity. It also emphasizes monitoring, reporting, verification, permanence provisions, and incentives. The white paper cites up to four gigatons of annual CO₂e mitigation potential for agricultural soils, including up to three gigatons of annual sequestration potential attributed to the IPCC. These are broad estimates of sector potential, not Indigo’s achieved removals. Indigo Ag’s 2025 soil-carbon white paper

How Indigo describes measuring and verifying a project

For project CAR1459, Indigo describes a hybrid approach under Climate Action Reserve’s Soil Enrichment Protocol v1.1. The company says soil samples initialize the DayCent-CR model, which is combined with protocol equations to quantify soil carbon and greenhouse-gas impacts for each cultivation cycle. The project page says its uncertainty calculation accounts for sample error, measurement error, and model prediction error. It describes verification after the fact by an independent ISO-accredited verification body and identifies Aster Global Environmental Solutions as the verifier contracted to date. CAR1459’s disclosure also describes a 14.5% buffer pool, continued monitoring for permanence, and monitoring for leakage, with conservative deductions if leakage occurs. These are features described for that project; they are not a guarantee that stored carbon can never be reversed.

What a buyer should check before relying on a credit

For a business evaluating soil-carbon credits, the relevant questions go beyond the headline number. Indigo’s CAR1459 materials illustrate several useful checks:

  • Registry and protocol: Which registry issued the credit, and which protocol governed quantification?
  • Measurement and verification: How are field samples, models, and independent verification used?
  • Uncertainty: Does the program account for sampling, measurement, and model error?
  • Permanence and reversals: What monitoring, buffer, and reversal provisions apply to the specific project?
  • Scope and vintage: Where did the project operate, and which growing period does a credit represent?
  • Retirement: Is the credit retired for the buyer, and is that status transparent?

Indigo’s project page describes project-level methods and safeguards; it does not establish an independent audit of the company’s aggregate April 2025 impact figure. Indigo’s January 2026 announcement about its Microsoft agreement separately describes a 40-year durability term for that agreement and the Soil Enrichment Protocol’s 100-year monitoring and reversal-compensation obligations. Those terms belong to that specific deal and protocol context, not a universal guarantee for all credits. Indigo’s January 15, 2026 Microsoft announcement

Other figures in Indigo’s 2025 announcement

Indigo also reported that its program had reduced surface-water runoff by 64 billion gallons and that 75% of credit value went directly back to farmers under its standard program. Both figures are claims in the company’s April 2025 announcement; they are not measures of carbon removals. Indigo’s April 16, 2025 announcement
