Card counting is a way to estimate the mix of cards left in a blackjack shoe by keeping a simple tally as cards are dealt. It can help a player judge whether the remaining mix is relatively favorable, but it does not reveal the next card, remove chance, or guarantee a profit.

How card counting works

Every exposed card changes the composition of the cards still available. A counting system compresses those changes into a running tally instead of requiring a player to remember every card. The tally is an estimate of the remaining mix, not a prediction of a particular card.

The method has practical meaning when cards remain in play across multiple rounds, as in a shoe game. After a shuffle, the composition resets and the count starts over. Players use the estimate to assess whether the remaining cards may be relatively favorable; a count by itself does not tell them what outcome will occur.

Terms you will encounter

  • Running count: The accumulated count as exposed cards are dealt.
  • True count: In a multi-deck game, an adjustment to the running count based on the estimated number of decks remaining.
  • Penetration: How far into the shoe cards are dealt before the dealer shuffles.
  • Bet spread: The range between a player’s smaller and larger wagers.

These terms describe parts of the method, not a universal betting formula. The appropriate calculations and wagering decisions depend on the game and its rules; there is no single betting plan that applies to every table.

How the main counting systems compare

Hi-Lo is commonly introduced as an entry-level system. Other named systems make different trade-offs in design and difficulty. The classifications below come from a commercial strategy explainer and are broad comparisons, not a recommendation or a substitute for checking a system’s technical details.

System Design Level and stated difficulty
Hi-Lo Balanced Level one; low difficulty; commonly presented for beginners
KO Unbalanced Low difficulty
Red 7 Unbalanced Low difficulty
Hi-Opt II Balanced Level two; high difficulty
Omega II Balanced Level two; high difficulty

“Balanced” and “unbalanced” describe how a system’s count behaves across a complete deck; “level” and difficulty are system classifications. The source used for these comparisons is Blackjack Apprenticeship’s card-counting systems explainer. Exact card tags and conversion instructions are not included here, so the table should be read as a high-level comparison.

Can counting guarantee a profit?

No. Counting estimates the cards remaining; it does not eliminate the uncertainty of a hand or ensure that a favorable estimate will produce a win. A short winning streak does not show that a system works, just as a losing streak does not by itself establish the reverse. Results depend on the particular game, its rules, how much of the shoe is dealt before a shuffle, and the player’s execution.

No single advantage percentage can responsibly be applied to every game or player. Without a defined game, rules, penetration, and skill level, a precise estimate would be misleading.

Is card counting legal?

There is no jurisdiction-free answer established here. The law depends on where you play, and a legal rule is distinct from a casino’s rules or property policies. Do not assume that a casino must allow a counting approach simply because a particular jurisdiction does not prohibit it.

For New Jersey, the Casino Control Commission hosts copies of regulations but warns that they are unofficial and directs readers to the official text when accuracy matters: New Jersey Casino Control Commission regulations. New Jersey’s Chapter 69 text also addresses casino discretion over wagering between rounds in specified circumstances; that provision is not a general legal opinion on card counting. Consult the official, current law and local rules for the place where you intend to play.

A book about blackjack teams

Ben Mezrich’s Bringing Down the House is a popular narrative account of an MIT blackjack team that used card counting, not a validated technical training manual. Simon & Schuster lists the paperback as ISBN 9780743249997: publisher’s book page.
