Ukur kotak dari sisi luarnya setelah barang selesai dikemas, lalu catat panjang (P), lebar (L), dan tinggi (T) dengan satuan yang sama. Volume kotak dihitung dengan rumus P × L × T. Jika ingin memperkirakan berat dimensi atau volumetrik, bagi hasil perkalian itu dengan pembagi yang ditetapkan kurir dan layanan yang dipilih; aturan pembulatan juga dapat berbeda.
Bedakan dimensi, volume, dan berat dimensi
P, L, dan T adalah tiga ukuran luar kotak. Mengalikannya menghasilkan volume dalam satuan kubik, bukan berat. Untuk memperoleh berat dimensi, kurir membagi volume dengan faktor tertentu. Rumus volume kotak dijelaskan dalam naskah akademik Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta; faktor dan ketentuan pengiriman harus mengikuti panduan kurir.
Sebagai contoh aritmetika, kotak berukuran 30 × 20 × 10 cm memiliki volume 6.000 cm³. Angka ini hanya menunjukkan volume kotak, bukan berat barang atau ongkos kirim.
Cara mengukur kotak dengan benar
- Selesaikan pengemasan. Ukur paket dalam kondisi siap diserahkan kepada kurir, bukan barang sebelum dimasukkan ke kotak. Panduan FedEx Indonesia membahas ukuran paket dalam kemasan pelanggan.
- Letakkan kotak pada posisi normal. Ukur bidang alas sebagai panjang dan lebar, lalu ukur tinggi secara vertikal. Diagram pada panduan UPS Indonesia menunjukkan ketiga dimensi paket.
- Ukur sisi luar. Gunakan meteran gulung atau alat ukur lain dan catat hasilnya dalam satuan yang seragam, misalnya sentimeter. Jangan mencampur sentimeter dengan meter dalam satu perkalian.
- Kalikan ketiga ukuran. P × L × T menghasilkan volume dalam satuan kubik yang sesuai, misalnya cm³ jika semua dimensi dicatat dalam sentimeter.
Menghitung berat dimensi untuk layanan kurir
Rumus umum yang ditampilkan dalam panduan FedEx Indonesia adalah volume dalam cm³ dibagi 5.000 untuk memperoleh berat dimensi dalam kg. FedEx meminta setiap dimensi pecahan dibulatkan ke sentimeter penuh berikutnya sebelum perhitungan. Halaman tersebut tidak mencantumkan tahun publikasi.

Untuk contoh kotak 30 × 20 × 10 cm, perhitungannya adalah 6.000 ÷ 5.000 = 1,2 kg menurut faktor FedEx Indonesia yang disebutkan di atas. Ini bukan jaminan bahwa semua kurir akan menagih berat atau tarif yang sama; ketentuan berat aktual, pembulatan hasil, layanan, dan tujuan dapat berpengaruh.

Kesalahan umum saat menghitung ukuran paket
- Menyebut volume sebagai berat volumetrik. Hasil P × L × T adalah volume; berat dimensi baru diperoleh setelah dibagi faktor kurir.
- Mengukur sebelum barang dikemas. Ukuran paket final dapat berubah karena kotak dan bahan pelindung, jadi ukur sisi luar paket siap kirim.
- Menganggap semua kurir memakai pembagi yang sama. Faktor 5.000 didukung panduan FedEx dan UPS yang dirujuk, tetapi tidak dapat digeneralisasi ke semua kurir atau layanan.
- Mengabaikan pembulatan. FedEx dan UPS menyampaikan aturan pembulatan dimensi yang berbeda dalam panduan masing-masing. Ikuti aturan layanan yang akan digunakan.
- Menganggap hasil hitungan sebagai ongkir pasti. Perkiraan berat dimensi tidak menetapkan tarif atau berat tertagih; konfirmasikan hasil di kalkulator atau panduan resmi kurir sebelum membayar.
